Super Paper Mario Hands-on
Mario and friends skate between the action, platform and RPG genres in this excellent new outing.

March 27, 2007 - If you didn't like the Paper Mario games before because they tended to lean too heavily on the RPG side - after all, they did employ those pesky turn-based battles - there is still hope for you. Nintendo's latest entry into the semi-related series, Super Paper Mario, utilizes the flat, cut-out style of the previous games, but ditches the turn-based battles in favor of a new emphasis on platformer-intensive levels and seamless character-building mechanics. Like Twilight Princess before it, the project began its life as a GameCube endeavor but ultimately landed on Wii. The difference is that Super Paper Mario can only be found on Nintendo's new console - no GCN version is planned. As far as we're concerned, the end result is the perfect marriage of platformer, action and RPG genres complemented by a handful of cleverly executed Wii-specific controls. And did we mention the game looks great, too?

It's rare that we can so strongly endorse a title. Maybe we've become too judgmental over the years or maybe we just expect too much, but we oftentimes find that our praises of videogames are usually countered by criticisms. However, in Super Paper Mario's case, we don't have many complaints. In our experience, the title tends to look better in 2D than it does in 3D and we've managed to (presumably) whip through what could be half of the title in about 10 hours, which suggests it might be too easy. The verdict on the latter notable is still out. But honestly, we've had fun progressing regardless and that's what counts.

Take a peek at Super Paper Mario and you might be quick to dismiss the game as a me-too sequel in the franchise. It shares the same aforementioned style and it features many of the star characters from the games before it. But there is a lot more going on in the project than you might anticipate. The graphics, which showcase blocky worlds and colorful, but basic backdrops, are made to look simple, but the gameplay mechanics are entirely complex. To advance through the title's many worlds, each comprised of four levels (1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, for example), you will have to think in both the second and third dimensions to complete puzzles, level up your characters, find and utilize the powers of special Pixls (we'll get to that), complete environmental puzzles, fight off bosses, and more. There is a lot going on underneath the cuddly-cute exterior of the Mushroom Kingdom.



To play the game, you hold the Wii remote classic style, as you would a traditional controller. The D-pad maneuvers first Mario, and then Peach and Bowser, who begrudgingly joins your party. You explore levels from left to right and back again in an homage to the platformers of old, but the twist is that, tapping the A button, you can pop into the third dimension at any time. When we played Super Paper Mario at the Game Developers Conference in early March, we were delighted to see that the mechanic had been cleverly implemented. In the 2D plain, a bush appeared to blend into the background, but upon going into 3D we found that we could actually walk behind the bush to a hidden doorway beyond. That was just the tip of the iceberg, as it turns out. Now that we've had more time with the game, we've discovered entire passageways housed within the 3D realm that are completely undetectable in the 2D one. Platforms that appear stacked atop each other in 2D turn into stairways in the third dimension. Enemies who wholly block walkways in 2D are shifted to the left or right, clearing a path, in the dimensional shift. The game embraces this mechanic and exists around it - nearly everything you do and see will require you to switch from 2D to 3D in order to progress. It's a really clever inclusion that fundamentally changes the experience for the better.

Pixls also better the experience. Mario and pals collect these magical creatures throughout the quest, which involves saving the world from Count Bleck, a being who hopes to swallow reality in a dimensional void. He's called upon a dark prophecy ignited by hypnotizing Bowser and Peach into a false marriage and it's up to Mario, Peach and Bowser to fight off his minions and stop Bleck before it's too late. Mario jumps with the 2 button and the special powers of Pixls are utilized with the 1 button. There are a variety of Pixls scattered across the quest. Thoreau, for instance, enables Mario to grab objects and throw them; Boomer enables him to lay bombs; Slim turns Mario flat, at which point he can squeeze through slits in walls or, if he's standing completely still, turn invisible; Thudley enables a powerful butt-stomp, which is useful for activating certain triggers; Carrie creates a platform that Mario can stand atop and hover across spiked walkways and other hazards; and Fleep exacts a frame around objects caught in another dimension and flips them to the correct one.

Pixls and characters can be changed in or out at any time for different effect simply by pressing the 1 and 2 buttons together to activate the interface screen. Mario jumps higher and is the only character that can flip between the second and third dimensions. Peach can float and she's a "babe," as one boss describes her. (This toad-like entity is the ultimate nerd and through clever writing we learn that he has a collection of videogames and comics, records all of his favorite television shows, and so on. He reminds us of many of our sad, pathetic friends. At one point, the boss says he's going to write angry messages about videogames he's never played on the message boards - it's obvious Nintendo frequents the Internet. The sappy enemy sees Peach and nearly has a mental meltdown since he has never encountered a real, live babe before. He can only communicate with her by bringing up his laptop and pretending to engage her RPG style.) And Bowser can breathe fire, a useful ability when there are several troublesome enemies nearby.

In addition to Pixls and characters, there are items - also selectable from the interface at any time. You've got items such as a gold bar, which restores 100 gold coins; a shooting star, which showers enemies with stars, a shroom shake, which restores 10 hit points and cures poison, and a turtley leaf, which reduces the damage your characters take by half. You will have to manage characters, Pixls, and items, in addition to flipping in and out of 3D, in order to make it through the game.

The Wii remote-specific controller functions aren't forced upon you. There are no real gimmicks, which is a relief. Instead, you can point the Wii remote at the screen at any time to learn about characters and items, but also to find hidden items. You might come to a room with a blank wall, but when you point the Wii remote in the direction, a secret doorway will be revealed. Also, you can shake the Wii remote once as you jump atop the heads of enemies for style points.

We'll need to reserve judgment on Super Paper Mario until we've completed the game, but so far it's proven to be a surprisingly stylized and entertaining romp, whether you want to classify it an action, platform, or RPG endeavor. If you're looking for something a little more "hardcore" then this project is probably going to be perfectly matched to your tastes. It's got the nostalgia factor, sure but it's also a wickedly clever game that impresses in just about every regard, from controls to level design and art style.
