EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has found its director for its feature The Flash. The studio has chosen Rick Famuyiwa, the up-and-coming director who on the feature front most recently helmed the Sundance pic Dope, which he scripted. He will step in and direct the film that Warner Bros has slotted for release on March 16, 2018 starring Miller, who is in starmaking mode at the studio in the Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, and who also had a cameo in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and will appear in The Justice League Part One. They will work out a deal quickly.
Famuiywa is receiving strong Emmy-season buzz for directing Confirmation, the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas HBO drama that stars Kerry Washington and Wendell Pierce as the two principal characters.
The Flash script is written by Seth Grahame-Smith, who was originally going to make his helming debut but exited the project over creative differences. Grahame-Smith’s take on the iconic DC Entertainment superhero is based on a treatment by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the Lego Movie duo that once expected to helm the picture. Warner Bros is looking for the right chemical mix on its superhero picture line based on the DC Comics heroes that started with Batman V Superman, and the feeling internally was that Famuyiwa provided a vision that would resonate with young viewers and that vision was very compatible with the script that the studio is moving toward the start gate with. That vision was executed to strong reviews in Dope, the 2015 film about a young geek trying to survive in a tough Los Angeles neighborhood.

“The Flash” director Rick Famuyiwa is already zeroing in on a familiar face for the DC film’s female lead.
Sources tell Variety that Famuyiwa’s top choice for the female lead in “The Flash” is Kiersey Clemons, who also starred in Famuyiwa’s critically acclaimed dramedy “Dope.“
Warner Bros. had no comment on the casting.
The film stars Ezra Miller, who first appeared as the superhero in WB’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
While details are still vague on who the character may be, insiders say it is likely to be Iris West, the tough-as-nails journalist and friend of Barry Allen, the alter ego of the Flash.
“The Flash” had to overcome the hurdle of replacing the film’s original director, Seth Grahame-Smith, who parted ways with the project over creative differences. The film, however, appears to be able to meet its start date. Production is expected to commence sometime this year.
The studio is keeping Smith’s most recent draft of the script, which is based on a treatment by Chris Miller and Phil Lord.
Clemons star has risen significantly since her breakout performance in “Dope.” Since the pic, she landed a role as one of Chloe Moretz’s sorority sisters in “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” as well as one of the leads in Sony’s remake of “Flatliners.”

After playing Dr. Manhattan in the Warner Bros. film “Watchmen,” Billy Crudup is now looking to reunite with the studio on one of their highly anticipated comic book movies.
Sources tell Variety Crudup is in talks to play the father of Barry Allen (aka the Flash) in the upcoming Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment film, which stars Ezra Miller as the title character.
Warner Bros. had no comment.
Kiersey Clemons is also on board as Iris West with “Dope” helmer Rick Famuyiwa. Seth Grahame-Smith penned the script which is based on a treatment by Chris Miller and Phil Lord.
Production is expected to start this year with the pic set to open on March 16, 2018. Plot details are being kept under wraps but Miller has already made a cameo as the character in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and will also appear as the superhero in “Justice League” which opens next year.
Crudup has roles in the Oscar winning “Spotlight”, the Sundance darling “The Stanford Prison Experiment,” the upcoming biopic “Jackie” and “20th Century Women” starring Annette Bening.
Crudup most recently wrapped production on “Alien: Covenant.” He is repped by CAA and Lighthouse Management.

"When I was approached by Warner Bros. and DC about the possibility of directing The Flash, I was excited about the opportunity to enter this amazing world of characters that I loved growing up, and still do to this day," Famuyiwa said Monday in a statement to THR.
He added: "I was also excited to work with Ezra Miller, who is a phenomenal young actor. I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humor and heart. While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Bros., DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force."
Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller met with DC Films during the production hiatus of the Star Wars “Han Solo” spinoff, insiders exclusively told TheWrap.

The duo met about the possibility of directing “The Flash” after Rick Famuyiwa left the project over creative differences last year, according to multiple individuals familiar with the project. It was unclear whether they were already considering an exit from the “Han Solo” project.
The two said in a statement Tuesday that they were leaving the “Star Wars” spinoff over creative differences.
“Forrest Gump” director Robert Zemeckis is currently the frontrunner to direct the DC Film’s “The Flash,” one of the insiders told TheWrap.
The film, starring Ezra Miller as the titular speedy superhero, would mark a return to the world of sci-fi-infused fantasy for the “Back to the Future” director, known for blending emotional stories with top-notch visual effects.
Lord and Miller originally wrote a treatment for “The Flash” back in 2015, but were never attached to direct the superhero pic about the Scarlet Speedster.
“The Flash” is a superhero whose incredible speed allows him to time travel. The character is going to be a part of Zack Snyder‘s “Justice League.” He debuted in last year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

It was announced today at San Diego Comic-Con today that DC Films’ The Flash will adapt the Flashpoint storyline. Warner Bros. revealed that the film’s title is Flashpoint at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
Written by Geoff Johns, Flashpoint is a key story arc in DC Comics lore. The 2011 comic book crossover follows Barry Allen, who decides runs back in time to prevent the death of his mother and by doing so creates an alternate timeline where he never becomes the Scarlet Speedster and the DC Universe is forever changed.
Flashpoint has been adapted a couple times since its inception. Once through the animated movie Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and more recently in the third season of The Flash television series on The CW. If done right, Flashpoint could be DC Films version of Captain America: Civil War. The film could take major plot points from the comics by possibly giving us a big screen version of Thomas Wayne as Batman played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and a war between the Atlanteans and Amazons. A summary of the plot can be found below.
“Flashpoint details an altered DC Universe in which only Barry Allen seems to be aware of significant differences between the regular timeline and the altered one, including Cyborg’s place as the world’s quintessential hero much like how Superman is in the main timeline, with Superman himself being held captive as a lab-rat by the United States government within an underground facility in Metropolis. In addition, a Thomas Wayne version of Batman, whose son Bruce Wayne is dead instead of him and his wife Martha (who becomes The Joker), spends his days “running Wayne Casinos” in order to help fund his vigilante activity.”
The Flash has had some trouble finding its footing. Losing multiple directors, missing and then cancelling the film’s start date this past winter and receiving a page-one rewrite of the script has caused major trepidation for fans of the character. With the knowledge that the film is based on Flashpoint, DC fans may now have more of an incentive to look forward to the film.
Recently, Robert Zemeckis and Matthew Vaughn emerged as the front runners to direct The Flash and it seems DC Films co-head Geoff Johns is very keen on the former directing the project. He even went as far as to praise him as his favorite director a few days ago at Comic-Con. The only hurdle currently standing in the way is that Zemeckis has to film a project with Steve Carrell that’s based at Universal, but it appears that DC may be willing to wait for him.
For now, Ezra Miller’s The Flash is set to appear in the upcoming DC mega-event Justice League alongside Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Amber Heard as Mera, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Willem Dafoe as Vulko and Cieran Hinds as Steppenwolf. Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
“Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”

Gal Gadot’s return as Wonder Woman for the Flashpoint movie has essentially been confirmed. Although many questioned the decision to cast Gadot initially, any doubt over her ability to embody the Wonder Woman character has since vanished. She made a good first impression in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice despite limited screen time, but burst onto the big screen this summer, as Wonder Woman dominated the box office. She has also received a bigger push in the marketing for Justice League as a result, with her potentially shaping up to be the face of the DC Extended Universe from heron out.
Warner Bros. is looking to make that the case the best they can by fast-tracking Wonder Woman 2 for a 2019 release. Outside of that, there were reports last month stating that Wonder Woman will appear in Flashpoint as well. Now, that return appears to have been finalized.
In a report focusing on one of Gadot’s next non-DCEU roles, Deadline also touched upon her future in the DC Comics cinematic universe. In doing so, they confirmed that she will reprise her role as Wonder Woman in Flashpoint, among other DCEU installments down the line. While this doesn’t come directly from Warner Bros., it is the second source to report that Gadot will appear in Ezra Miller’s Flash solo movie and can be taken as confirmation, especially if the Flashpoint movie follows the source material.
The confirmation of Gadot is not surprising, as Wonder Woman plays a big role in the Flashpoint comic arc that the film will be based on. In this alternate reality comic book story, Wonder Woman serves as the villain along with Aquaman. Superman, Cyborg, and the Thomas Wayne version of Batman also appear, so confirmations of Jason Momoa, Henry Cavill, Ray Fisher, and/or Jeffrey Dean Morgan showing up in the Flashpoint movie could be arriving in the coming months.
That said, Flashpoint still has quite a ways to go before it hits theaters and audiences get to see Gadot back on the big screen again. WB has yet to officially name a director, but the latest report names Robert Zemeckis as the favorite to direct. Once a director is named, said helmsman will then have to finalize the script. The studio is reportedly looking at 2020 for the release of Flashpoint, so they still have plenty of time to figure all these things out.
Should that targeted release year be true, then it would mark consecutive years that Gadot appears as Wonder Woman. Plus, if WB/DC find a way for her to cameo in Aquaman as well, she could string together five years in a row of making at least one appearance as the DCEU’s Wonder Woman.
