New DICE shooter revealed
Friday 29-Jun-2007 9:46 AM First word on Battlefield dev's top secret console-exclusive shooter, Mirror's Edge, inside
http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=166931
Battlefield developer Digital Illusions is gearing up to unveil a brand new first-person shooter called Mirror's Edge, CVG can reveal
We're told the title will appear on consoles only, PS3 and Xbox 360 to be precise, and that the developer has big plans to shake up the genre with it.
The only image we've seen from the game shows a young Asian female dressed like some kind of futuristic punk. And she's crouching holding a pistol down between her legs.
Weird, circuit-board-looking tattoos run down the outside of her right arm from the shoulder, and black bobbed hair frames a face that's covered in white foundation. Surrounding her right eye is crazy black make-up shaped in a star.

It reminds us of the movie Nikita in a way, and gives the impression of a futuristic setting.
In the past Digital Illusions has mentioned (and here) development of at least two unnamed games for PS3 and Xbox 360 - presumably one of these is Battlefield: Bad Company, and it now appears another is Mirror's Edge.
More on Mirror's Edge soon.

Mirror's Edge UK Preview
Gotta have Faith.
by Martin Robinson, IGN UK
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/887/887736p1.html
UK, July 10, 2008 - We'd previously never envisaged the life of a courier as one dripping in adventure and high-wire acrobatics, but if our first looks at the world of DICE's Mirror's Edge are indicative of the thrills of the delivery trade we may well just hotfoot it to DHL and ask where we sign.
The game's heroine is Faith, a courier in a dystopian future – albeit one of the prettiest dystopias we've ever laid eyes on – whereby police intrusion is an everyday occurence. Dealing with the exchange of important information, she carries out her business on the rooftops of the anonymous city as she is called upon to perform dazzling feats of acrobatics in her employment.
Underpinning her acrobatics is an elegantly streamlined control system with one shoulder button prompting a vault or a jump, and another sending Faith into a slide. It's all going to be context sensitive, but having seen the fluidity of the action throughout the hands-on demo it seems the control system will be sensitive to the needs of the player while working to constantly create the most cinematic approach to the scenery.
Runner Vision is another tool that helps ease players into the world of Mirror's Edge - highlighting a path with clean primary colours, it's a pathfinder that some may find too prescriptive and thankfully it's an optional overlay on the game's city. How freeform Mirror's Edge will be remains to be seen, though initial tags of the game as an open world experience were perhaps a little wide of the mark - while improvisation is seemingly encouraged and accommodated, the city itself is an accumulation of self-contained areas. We also glimpse a telling 'Time Trials' option in the main menu's fleeting appearance as our guide navigates the early code, and although DICE won't yet divulge exactly how this mode will be integrated it indicates that the levels will be bite-sized forays through the bigger picture of Faith's overarching tale.
The first section we see is the much-salivated-over teaser trailer – and if you've yet to see it, click here and we may just forgive you – played before our eyes in real-time. Frame-for-frame it manages to draw our breath, while at the same time moving to assuage concerns that the game would operate on rails.
Threading an intricate path both under and over a series of obstacles, Faith lithely works her way across the searingly bright rooftop, the game's azure skies and clinical white surfaces illuminating the darkened demo room – and in our periphery we can see an audience of smiles and barely contained excitement as the heady promise of the trailer is played out once more. Faith's full body presence works in tandem with some deft direction of the first-person camera to create a sense of weight and momentum that inspires a vertiginous swell in our stomachs, no more so than when our heroine tightropes across a pipe, her feet framed by a steep drop with sirens flashing on the streets below.
A news helicopter swoops in on the scene, indicative of the pervasive nature of Mirror's Edge's world, which Faith eludes by taking an audacious leap from the precipice of a skyscraper. It's at this point the action slows, Faiths descent going into bullet time as she plummets towards a pipe that ascends the wall of the adjacent building. The landing is marked with a sickening thud and time resumes its normal flow, as Faith sprints indoors away from the gaze of the circling chopper.
A second level we glimpse, not tempered by the giddy expectation that the first trailer engendered, allows for a more level headed appreciation of what Mirror's Edge will ultimately deliver. Commencing at the pit of a storm drain, the surroundings maintain the clean industrial lines we've seen in previous glimpses of the game while attaining a claustrophobic air naturally absent from Faith's rooftop flights. A hint button guides the viewpoint towards the goal, in this case the very peak of the storm drain that's bleeding sunlight across the damp cylinder of the drain.
Faith's journey to the top is as acrobatic as her trek across the roofs, with a few little puzzle-based detours en route to avert the flow of water and operate a mid-air platform. We also witness a previously unseen move in Faith's repertoire that sees her swinging from pole to pole. This ability, combined with the way the levels intertwine the lead's free-running skills with an intricate jigsaw of obstacles, brings heavily to mind the fondly remembered Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, comparisons to which the production team are happy to invite.
Having scaled the drain, Faith is confronted with a scene peppered with shotgun-wielding soldiers. Approaching one, she uses the scenery to propel herself upwards, planting a foot into the soldier's face and deftly disarming him before taking the gun for herself. What follows highlights a sea change in DICE's approach to gunplay, whose previous console title Battlefield: Bad Company so gloriously fetishised its weaponry. While she is free to use the gun at will, the weight of the piece strips her of her acrobatics. Not only does it balance the weight of the play, it produces an interesting mechanic whereby players who will no doubt be enamoured with Faith's elaborate toolset of moves will no doubt throw away the gun at the first opportunity.
And by throwing the gun away, the team at DICE have put forth one of the most exciting prospects on the horizon for this generation of consoles. Bold, assured and refreshingly different, we can only hope that they are rewarded for their leap of Faith.
·Faith
