September 21, 2007 - It's not long after picking up an instrument and learning how to play Smoke on the Water and Iron Man that you'll want to team up with your buddies and form the next crappy local band, banished forever to the pit of hell known as the bar cover band scene. In a similar vein, now that Harmonix has blown out the formula it created with Guitar Hero and has given us the ability to join forces on the guitar, bass, vocals and drums with Rock Band, we too have formed our own cover band.

We are The Ignorant Sluts, the greatest cover band to have never actually played a live show in front of real people.

While having a kick ass name like The Ignorant Sluts is the most important element of a band, the second most important part is the clothes - nay, wardrobe - that you wear onstage. Or in front of your television while playing plastic instruments, whatever the case may be. And so we delved into Rock Band character creation and customization tools...



While not as robust as something like Tiger Woods' fantastic Game Face system, Rock Band does allow you a number of options to use for creating your onscreen persona. After picking your gender and a name, you can then browse through a number of head types, pick through various hair styles, change your height and weight, tweak your skin tone, and choose a style (like rock or punk). Once you're happy with your base character, it's time for some shopping.
The number of clothing, shoe and accessory options at your disposal is pretty insane, and we're told that what we saw didn't include a myriad of unlockable items. While you're able to put together a rather plain set of threads, you can also go off the deep end and outfit your character with all sorts of GWAR-inspired items or other similarly outrageous rags.

But clothes themselves don't make a rocker. In order to properly display your natural musical abilities, you'll want to outfit your dude (or dudette) with tattoos and makeup. Tattoos work as you'd expect, where you begin by picking a body part and an ink design. But you're not stuck with what you're given though as you can rotate, resize and move the tattoo to fit how and where you'd like.

While the tattoo options allow for near-perfect placement, the makeup tool is even better. A large selection of shapes and such are at your disposal, which you can resize, rotate and move, just like the tattoo tool. But Harmonix has taken a cue from Photoshop and perhaps Forza 2's livery system and implemented the ability to use layers of makeup. When working with each section of your character's body (that sounds dirty), you can pile shape on top of shape, each one tweaked, twisted and placed to your liking. The end result is that you can quite literally paint pretty much anything you can imagine onto your character.

Shortly after Rock Band was first announced for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, retailers posted product pages for the game's various instruments and an all-in-one bundle. However, Harmonix and MTV Games remained stubbornly mum on the subject of pricing and package options for the music game.

That changed today when a Harmonix rep confirmed for GameSpot that Amazon.com's latest changes to the game's price and release date are accurate. The online retailer is currently listing the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 bundles of the game for $169.99, with a November 23 release date.

In addition to that news, the representative also confirmed the PlayStation 2 version's price and release date. Last-generation gamers will have to wait a little longer to shred, but the price of admission won't be quite so steep, because the PS2 bundle will sell for $159.99 when it arrives December 10. The game and instruments will also be available separately.

Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 bundles will include the game, a wired drum kit, and a microphone. The 360 bundle will also come with a wired Fender Stratocaster guitar controller and USB hub, whereas the PS3 bundle will come with a wireless version of the Stratocaster controller and no USB hub. The PS3 edition's instruments can also be used with the PS2 edition of the game.

In May, results that were leaked from a focus group revealed that MTV Games was asking potential customers about three price points: $150, $175, and $200. Shortly thereafter, GameStop began listing the entire bundle for $199, which indicated that Harmonix, MTV Games, and distributor Electronic Arts had opted for the highest price point possible.

September 28, 2007 - On the heels of news that the Rock Band bundle will ship for $169.99 this November, IGN's private coverband, the Ignorant Sluts, recorded two new music videos. Last week, IGN revealed "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden and R.E.M.'s "Orange Crush." This week, we give you direct-feed video of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Dani California" and Kiss' classic, "Detroit Rock City." Both of these songs can be played if you check out the Rock Band bus tour, that is currently traveling the country.

Harmonix has confirmed 35 licensed tracks for Rock Band so far. We've been promised at least 40 tracks for Rock Band, with the chance that there could be up to 45 tracks when the title ships. That doesn't include all of the bonus indie tracks and other unlockables in the game. And, of course, there will be new downloadable songs every week for an entire year to help grow your Rock Band library.

October 15, 2007 - The quintessential Southern rock band is Lynyrd Skynyrd. But one of the most recognizable Southern rock songs is actually by lesser-known Molly Hatchet. "Flirting with Disaster," the title track from Hatchet's second album (released in 1979) is the latest song added to the growing list for Harmonix's Rock Band.

The Ignorant Sluts, IGN's tribute band, had the chance to play "Flirting with Disaster" the other day. Be warned: This song nearly killed us. Listed as one of the toughest songs in Rock Band, "Disaster" will test the strength of every member of your band. Roper, the Ignorant Slut's drummer, nearly broke down in tears by the end of the song and bassist Davey Clay called it "the most ridiculous and awesome bass line of all time."

Harmonix has unveiled plans to relaunch the company’s official website to coincide with the release of its forthcoming Rock Band title later next month.

According to the developers, the site will be revamped to accommodate leaderboards, blogs, band pages as well as a special advertising section, allowing users to acquire new band members. The aim, Harmonix says, is to encourage early adopters to play together.

Additionally, the company announced that the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game would be released three days earlier than expected, and will now arrive on November 20. The PlayStation 2 version, however, is still slated for release in December.

Unfortunately, European fans will have to wait until early 2008 to get their hands on the highly anticipated music simulation title.

So Guitar Hero III has been out for about a week and you've played it from start to finish numerous times. With no signs of any downloadable content in the near future (what's up with that?) where can you turn for more rhythm based rock gameplay? Well, fear not for the holy grail of rhythm games, Rock Band, finally went gold today.

The game has been shipped off to manufacturers ready for the November 20th release date (December 18th for the PS2 version with PS3 compatible guitars).

November 9, 2007 - Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld is the highlight of Rock Band's 13 unlockable bonus tracks. As those who have been following Harmonix's next music game, Rock Band includes 45 licensed tracks. Today, IGN got hold of the list of bonus tracks, which boost the total track list for Rock Band to 58. That, of course, is out of the box. New music tracks for Rock Band (all of which work with every mode in the game) will be made available for download weekly following the game's release.

Nine of the thirteen bonus tracks are songs from various bands starring members of the Harmonix development team. The remaining tracks are from bands that aren't as famous as the Rolling Stones, but still worth having on disc. The final track is Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld, an up-and-coming band from South Park, Colorado. Here's the complete list of Rock Band tracks and a taste of Timmy.
