September 23, 2006 - The most popular sport in the world is soccer (or football to anyone outside of the US), and the best and most popular soccer game is Konami's Winning Eleven series. Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 is the second release of the series on the PSP, and Konami aims to score via a header directly past the keeper.

The game is on display at the Tokyo Game Show 2006 at Konami's booth, and the time that we've been able to spend with the title left us with positive expectations for the finished game. Pro Evolution 2007 plays very smoothly, with the framerate and controls both fluid and feeling quite natural. Passing is fantastic as always, with the game seemingly always making the best decision of who you meant to pass to and sending the ball their way. Even in a crowd of players, it's almost like its reading your mind.

In one case, we were on a breakaway and heading straight for the keeper. Right before the goalie could get his foot on the ball, we made a drop pass to a player who was off the screen and in extremely heavy traffic. Somehow though, the ball went right to his cleats and we were able to put it in. Being able to pull of a play like this without fighting the controls is wonderful.

Our only concern with the game at this point is its player switching mechanic. The game automatically swaps to the closest player to the ball for you without having you need to press a button. This works well in some cases, but in others it's somewhat of a nuisance. We did encounter one situation where we were essentially stuck on one player and couldn't switch to the vastly more ideal defensiveman, and unfortunately the CPU was able to capitalize on this.

Aside from this quirk, the game seems rather solid. The build is of course in Japanese, so we don't exactly have an idea of just how deep any sort of career or franchise play will be, but knowing the series we're not too worried. Of note, load times were almost non-existent. We didn't see the game boot from scratch so it's possible there's a long load when you first start, but once we were in the game we never had to wait more than a couple seconds for the game to get underway. Very nice.

We'll have more on Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 for the PSP soon, so stay tuned.
