Codemasters just announced that Rhianna Pratchett will write the scripts for the three upcoming Overlord games, and included was some nice images of Overlord II. The game will be released on Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC next year, and I must say it looks pretty good.

It's one thing having a great idea, but quite another fleshing it out to the point where it can sustain a ten-hour videogame.

The original Overlord, for all its charm, suffered in exactly that area. While it was fun to order around a band of goblins, and there were plenty of cute animations to accompany the carnage, toward the midway point it was beginning to feel like something of a one-note joke.

It's tough to feel like an omnipotent ruler when the only thing you can tell your subjugated hordes to do is to turn the odd wheel or smash a box that, had you the inclination, you could wander over and break yourself. Don't get us wrong, it was a good game, it just needed a little more fleshing out to become brilliant.

Overlord 2 benefits from having the form and structure established, which leaves the enthusiastic team at Triumph Studios the time to start cramming it full of fresh ideas, refined technology and more varied challenges.

The biggest change to Overlord's fantasy world is that in the absence of the original bucket-headed despot, who was killed at the end of the first game's DLC, a new Roman-inspired Empire has risen to fill the power vacuum, and the worst excesses of that particular period of real history are caricatured here.

The crucial shift is that civilisation has moved from belief in magic and nature to logic and science, and the Glorious Empire has placed all magical creatures on their hit list. In the story, again written by Rhianna Pratchett, you play as the Overlord's son, who has been smuggled away to the frozen northern region of Nordberg.

For at least a portion of the game, you'll play as an adorably malicious little tyke, vastly outgunning the other children in snowball fights. After you're cast out of Nordberg (the glowing eyes are a bit of a giveaway that you're stuffed full of magical energy), it's not long before you're reunited with the lovable hordes of minions that make the series unique.

Controlling these small goblin creatures are the key to just about every puzzle and battle you'll face. While the Overlord himself can wade into a dust-up and start swinging, against the Empire's organised legions he'd be outnumbered, so utilising the four different flavours of minion for a concerted assault is the game's key combat mechanic.

The minions themselves have been made smarter, more useful and, brilliantly, have been given more personality. Now each of the little blighters will have a name, and if they achieve something particularly impressive, such as killing a specific enemy it'll be added to that name, so you're likely to become quite attached to Snotling the Spider-Slayer.

The other big change is that minions can now hop on mounts, which provide new, themed abilities. Brown minions are chummy with wolves, which can leap over gaps, and move faster than a standard minion on foot. Red minions get the snazzy fire salamanders which roll up as you sweep them, and can bombard enemies with fireballs while moving. Green minions arguably get the best lot, though - their spiders can climb onto walls, allowing your stealthy hordes to get to otherwise inaccessible areas.

Tower In Inferno
Of course no Overlord would be complete without a tower from which to scheme. Sadly, the original game's mighty totem of tyranny was utterly destroyed, but the Overlord's new digs are nothing short of spectacular.

Residing in the netherworld, the tower is actually built into an enormous, hanging stalactite on the roof of an underground cavern, dangling over an enormous lava lake (which presumably makes for an extremely cheap central heating bill). In response to fan criticism, you can now sit in your throne and grant an audience to the peasants you've enslaved. They'll offer side-quests and you can either accept them or pull a lever to drop the hapless serf through a trapdoor.

In fact, enslavement is something of a theme throughout the new game. One of the criticisms of the original was that players didn't feel like they were given the opportunity to be truly evil - while tabs were kept on your level of corruption, several of the missions took the form of good deeds, which undermined the very nature of the character.

Now your choices are different variations on an evil theme - you'll be given the opportunity to dominate or destroy.

Capture a peasant village, for example, and you can either raze it to the ground and kill all of its inhabitants, claiming a huge life-force boost, or you can capture it and enslave the villagers, who will provide you with gradual life force improvements over time. This dynamic even permeates the combat system, so spells that you cast as Overlord can be used to 'dominate', but hold the button too long and they'll 'destroy' instead. The more you plump for one over the other, the more difficult it'll be to stray from your chosen path.

It's the addition of new mechanics such as this that make Overlord 2 an even more tantalising prospect than the original. We had the opportunity to play on a very early build of the game, and in just a small portion of a level, we were using our minions to break up formations of Empire legionaries, stealing disguises to sneak past guards, commandeering a catapult and using it to smash enemies with boulders.

If the game can keep shaking up the play style this regularly, it will be a joy to play. Our only concern at the moment is the slightly fiddly camera control - with so many games using the Right stick to control the cam, having to hold the Left bumper is jarring.

Otherwise, though, we're excited by the sheer amount of new stuff Triumph is planning to add to the already popular strategic action. Being bad looks like it's going to feel very good indeed.
