It's hunting time. Info and strategy on the first dragon, including over a dozen new screens, direct feed, and concept art.

by Bozon
http://wii.ign.com/articles/810/810043p1.html

August 1, 2007 - Since the first showing of Dragon Blade here at IGN.com we've been getting amazing feedback for the game, so much so that people are taking note. At a recent event in Comic-Con D3 Publisher talked with us about running a profile series specifically detailing each of the dragons you'll be facing in the company's upcoming action brawler Dragon Blade, and of course we were happy to oblige. You asked for more Dragon Blade, and we're delivering.

Starting this Wednesday we'll be featuring a different dragon every other week, giving you not only new screens and concept art, but also a detailed description of the baddie, an in-depth strategy on how to battle them handed down directly from the game's development team, and direct-feed footage of the lizard in battle. All of this info will be coming to you exclusively through IGN Wii, so be sure to mark your calendar, start sharpening your blade, and get ready for Dragon Blade.

This Week's Dragon: Jagira
Description:
Jagira, the water dragon lords over kingdom of Gamar from his lair deep beneath the sewers of a decrepit castle. Because he can transform his body into liquid, he has flooded the land with rains, and overflowing streams and rivers so he can silently stalk the inhabitants. The only warning of his presence is a few seconds of water bubbling to the surface before he emerges and engulfs his prey.

Boss Strategy for Jagira

This fight opens with Jagira using his Wave Attacks and submerging after a few defiant roars at Dal. The roars are Jagira's weak point, as he is completely vulnerable while performing them. When Jagira rears up to do a Wave Attack, roll to his side to avoid it, and move up to his flanks in order to begin to attack him. Jagira will roar once or twice, allowing for some damage to be put in, but will submerge quickly after one of these roars, so be ready to roll backwards. If the submerge hits, it will do some major damage, so making sure that Dal is well clear of Jagira's body is a smart move.

After submerging, Jagira will move to another area of the battlefield and re-emerge. This attack can also hit you as he rises, so make sure that you keep your distance. At this point, Jagira will repeat his Water Attack/Roar pattern, so keep up the pressure and you'll take down his first form in no time. When Jagira is reduced to no HP, he will go into his first Core Break, where you'll be able to hit a flashing Core to take him out of his first phase. Move quickly, as he will regain his health after a short time, and you'll have to take down another 10% of his life to try and break the Core again.

When Jagira moves into phase two, he will change up his pattern. Now he will be submerging more often, and using Water Mines on you while he is underwater, along with a Water Pillar that will track you as you move. Whenever he comes out of the water, quickly get in a few hits if he roars, or dodge and strike if he attempts to do a Wave Attack. After one of these two attacks, he will quickly go back underwater, at which time a random formation of Water Mines will appear around Dal. Your choice here is to either run at the mines and attempt to Dodge Roll through them, or to stay in the middle and try to dodge the Water Pillars Jagira will be sending at you from underwater. In either case, Jagira will resurface after 5 Water Pillars, at which time he will restart his sequence of Roar/Wave then submerging. Keep on him every chance you get and this phase will quickly be over.

Phase three is less of a hit and run affair than it was in Phase two, but Jagira will still be moving around a lot due to his new Charge ability. This phase will consist of Jagira getting ready, then charging at Dal, followed by a submerge and emerge somewhere else. Every couple of charges, Jagira will emerge from the water and either roar or Wave Attack, which will give a chance to get some damage in, so use it! As soon as he starts getting ready to charge again, move away so that you don't get trampled. Keep on Jagira, getting in hits when possible, and he'll soon be in a position to Core Break him. Follow the onscreen instructions and this fight will quickly be over, with the first Dragon defeated.

That's it for this week's Boss Breakdown. Be sure to check back on August 15 for the next dragon reveal, as we continue our pre-launch coverage of Wii's exclusive beat-em-up Dragon Blade. Also, don't forget to check out more exclusive screens and concept art by heading to our gallery below.

Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire Review
A budget title at a not-so-budget price.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/824/824748p1.html

Closing Comments
We dig the Dragon Blade concept, and it's one of the reasons we've been following the game so close since its first showing during pre-E3 showings. Wii needs more games like Dragon Blade, not only on the "original IP" train of thought, but as far as beat-em-ups go. The game simply suffers from what looks like a fast development time, not a ton of experience with the hardware yet, and a full retail pricing. As a $50 game Dragon Blade lacks in far too many areas to be worth the cash, as the combat is simple, the design is entirely one-dimensional, and the simplistic enemy AI and gameplay bugs get in the way of an otherwise straightforward design. For fans of beat-em-up games, or for those that just want to try something new on Wii, give this one a rental. Everyone else is free to join us on the wait for a more polished, focused, and ambitious effort in a sequel. The concept is there, but the execution isn't.

IGN Ratings for Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire (Wii)
6.5 Presentation
A decent story is paired with some well-made storyboards and text-based cinematic sequences. Nothing amazing, but a decent front end.
5.5 Graphics
Basic. The fire effects look great, but everything else could have been done on late PSX, or early PS2. Animations are a mixed bag.
5.5 Sound
Some VO is used during the beginning of the game, but is then dropped even in cinematic areas. Some of the music is captivating, but overall it's average.
5.5 Gameplay
It's an ambitious gesture-recognition system, but it runs around 80% accuracy overall. Dragon attacks come in too late in the game for our tastes, and combat gets repetitive.
5.0 Lasting Appeal
No multiplayer or reason to replay the game. Combat can get shallow after a while, but the difficulty is there. If you're curious, rent it. Not worth the $50 price point though.
5.6 Mediocre OVERALL (out of 10 / not an average)

GameSpot Score 4.0
poor This wimpy action game for the Wii is easy on the wrist but hard on the eyes.

The Good Lots of boss fights.
The Bad The controls are imprecise Visuals look incomplete The story ends when the game begins You die cheap deaths Takes six hours to beat.

You can tell by the randomly generated title that Dragon Blade isn't going for creative gusto. This game could have just as easily been called Dragon Fire: Wrath of Blade, Blade Wrath: Dragon of Fire, Dragon Fire Blade: Wrath Of, or Of Wrath, Dragons, Blades, and Colons. What it can never be is worth your money or time. This Wii-flinging hack-and-slash action game features a couple of decent boss fights, as well as a few interesting enemy encounters. However, its low budget, high price tag, fickle controls, and terrible cheapness keep it from being a game worth generating in the first place.

The most interesting detail about Dragon Blade is that its plot was penned by author Richard A. Knaak, author of such diverse titles as Dragon Hunt, Ice Dragon, The Crystal Dragon, and Day of the Dragon. In this, his latest opus, a good dragon named Valthorian enters human society until his five evil siblings take over the minds of humanity's rulers and convince them to chop Valthorian into little pieces. Somehow, the good dragon's soul is contained in a sword, which is found by a farm boy named Dal, right after some bad guys kill his girlfriend.

Hero one, monster zero.

The rest of the plot goes as follows: Dal arrives at ruins. His sword says something to the effect of "This place used to be nice. Dragons messed it up." And then, in the name of a better tomorrow with higher property values, you fight stuff. Specifically, you fight wolves, bears, spiders, bats, lizard people, archers, orcs, minotaurs, and wizards. Those are the only enemies in the game, and although they change colors in later levels, they never behave any differently. Everywhere you go, lizard people are the same.

At least they die in different ways. As Dal, you can slash foes with your sword or subdue them with dragon magic. But before we get to things like the dragon punch, let's cover the basics. With flicks of the Wii Remote, you can hack and slash, while normal button presses will cause you to parry, roll, or jump. For the most part, you can just wag the Wii Remote like the tail of a dog to get your dirty deeds done. The only exception is the thrust, which requires a poking motion and nets you red crystals. These, in turn, fill your dragon magic bar.

It sounds simple, and indeed it is. But the game's interpretations of your motions are awfully subjective. You may be trying to slash but wind up poking--or vice versa. This can be bad because the poke is a slower attack and can leave you wide open to damage. The greater issue, though, is the fact that Dragon Blade is the gesture equivalent of a button masher, a Wiigler if you will. And it's impossible not to notice the poignancy of the effect. To get an idea of how this works, hold your hand in front of you like you're holding a Wii Remote then shake it back and forth at the wrist. You just summed up Dragon Blade.

To its credit, there are some bright spots. Two of every three levels feature a boss fight, and these tend to be pretty interesting. The dragons are big, they have the coolest-looking attacks in the game, and their fights take place in three stages. The first is a simple attack pattern, the second is a new attack pattern, and the third is a core break chance that mimics the cinematic battles from God of War, but without the style or violence. The other boss fights pit you against the human kings turned wicked by dragon magic. Each possesses one of Valthorian's body parts, and when you defeat them, you gain a special attack associated with that part.

The dragon punch claims another victim.

For instance, right off the bat, you defeat a guy with a dragon hand. From then on, pressing right on the D pad will turn your sword into a giant, flaming dragon paw. By swiping or poking with the Wii Remote, your attacks will do much more damage and consume dragon power. Although you gain a handful of powers by the end of the game, the dragon punch is the only one you'll regularly use. It is mana efficient, and one smack can fell most standard enemies.

Even though you only have to kill them once, the kings are the biggest source of frustration in Dragon Blade. In any given level, you can either restart from the beginning or continue from your last checkpoint. However, you only get five continues before you have to restart. Because every dragon is a level in and of itself, you can repeatedly fight them without having to wade through a flood of foes. But kings come at the ends of long levels, and if you die a couple of times on the way to them, you only have three chances to defeat them before they knock you all the way back to the beginning of a stage.

Despite being forced to play some levels two, three, or even four times, Dragon Blade only takes six hours to beat. Because the enemies are the same all the way through, you'll have no problem exploiting their patterns in later stages, and even the cheapest boss fights can be won once you learn the pattern.

Speaking of cheap, Dragon Blade looks like a bargain-bin game, even though at the time of this review, it cost $40. The environments look unfinished and the enemies look silly. Dal himself is a nondescript hero, although his sword is impressively fiery. The music is generic Japanese adventure fare, and in place of voice work are little emotive sound bytes. When you're holding your dying girlfriend in your arms, you say, "Uh!" and she says, "Argh!"

Then again, with lines like "Now it's time to vanquish you again, forever!" who needs voice actors? Though your inner dragon hunter may yearn for mortal combat with giant scaly monstrosities, you should save your money for a better game than Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire.
