May 23, 2008 - Seriously, that will be the last joke about being alone with your Wii in the dark. Though, that would probably be the best way to play a game like Alone in the Dark, a soon to be released revival of the classic franchise by Atari. At a recent showcase event we got a chance to take the Wii version of the multiplatform release for a spin. While it isn't 100% identical to the Xbox 360 or PC builds, the storyline and most of the content are the same and Atari has infused the Wii motion controls into every aspect of the game.

We'll get the differences out of the way first. The technical limitations of the Wii and PS2 don't allow those iterations of Alone in the Dark to be identical to what you get on their stronger cousins. The fire, one of the big tech selling points for the game, isn't dynamic here. It's "simulated" to be close to what you see on the other consoles, we're told. Likewise, the game is more linear, particularly in the Central Park locations that are left more open to exploration on other systems.

Now, onto the fun.


No, he's not a pervert. He's just checking his inventory.

Atari wants everybody to beat this game and that means making the game as easy to get into as possible. That starts with a DVD style menu. After completing the opening sections of the game, a chapter and scene selection becomes available. Can't beat a tricky part? Pull up the menu and skip to the next. Want to replay a cool moment? No problem. This nonlinear structure may seem a bit odd in a game that is ostensibly all about plotline and tension, but this is the first step towards removing hurdles that prevent some gamers from tackling titles that could otherwise be overwhelming. You won't be able to get lost after a short break from the game either. Each chapter begins with a "previously on Alone in the Dark" recap trailer to get you up to speed.

Of course Atari knows that if it is going to win over the less hardcore gamer, it is going to have to make the controls as intuitive as possible. After playing through a few sections of the game, it's easy to see that the company didn't simply add some waggling in for the combat and call it a day.

We started by playing a driving section. The goal was to race through the streets of Manhattan and make it to Central Park while avoiding cracks and fissures created by some evil force running amok. You know, your typical drive through the streets of New York. Steering is done by holding both the Wiimote and nunchuk up as if you were gripping a steering wheel. The B button is used for acceleration while rising and lowering each hand does the steering. It worked well enough that I was able to make it through the entire race on the first try…though not everybody in attendance had such luck.

Driving was just the beginning. Combat and exploration make full use of the unique controls as well. To open your inventory, you can simply twist both sections of the controller like handles. Want to quickly take out your gun or put it away? Once it is equipped you simply have to flick your wrist to draw it. Do the opposite and it is quickly stowed away for later. Things like jumping can be done with a button press, but if you're in the right place you can simply launch Carnby up with some deft Wiimote flicks. Even the melee attack has multiple ways of swinging depending upon how you move the Wiimote.

We didn't get a lot of time with the game but it didn't take long to get a handle on the controls, even if they aren't exactly traditional. Whether these controls hold up for the entire game remains to be seen, though more perhaps more important to the success of Alone in the Dark will be how suspenseful the adventure is. We should know the answers soon as Alone in the Dark launches on Wii (and on PC, 360, and PS2 in slightly different forms) in late June.

Alone in the Dark demo plans revealed

Infogrames president Phil Harrison has revealed when we can expect a playable demo of Alone in the Dark to arrive.

Speaking to Eurogamer last week he said, "There's an Xbox Live Marketplace demo which'll be up a week before the game comes out."

That'd be some time around 13th June then, seeing as Alone in the Dark for Xbox 360 is out on 20th June. PC, PS2 and Wii versions will be released on the same date, with a PS3 game to follow in the autumn.

When asked whether we can expect any downloadable content in future Harrison said, "We've not made any announcements on that yet."

However, it doesn't sound too likely. Later on in the interview, Harrison said he doesn't reckon the games industry will make many more "beautifully crafted single-player game[s]" like Alone in the Dark, explaining, "I just don't think consumers want to be playing games that don't have some kind of network connectivity to them, or some kind of community embedded in them, or some kind of extension available through downloadable content.

"Now, that's not to criticise Alone in the Dark," he continued. "It's just to recognise the industry is changing, and the role we play as creators and publishers has to reflect those changes. I don't think I'm alone in having those views, either."

Eden Games downs tools and puts its feet up as work on Atari's movie-style scare-'em-up is finally wrapped up, although the PS3 version isn't out until autumn.

The game has been floating around since 2006, and was originally planned for a May 2008 release before being hit with a delay which, Atari told CVG, was simply to give developer Eden games another 30 days to polish the final game up some more.

That means the Xbox 360, PC versions of the game, along with the Hydravision Entertainment-developed Wii and PS2 versions, are all set to hit shops on June 20 as planned.

The PS3 version, meanwhile, is STILL hanging on a vague "autumn" release.

"The PS3 version looks brilliant, people have seen it and it looks cool," an Atari spokesperson promised CVG.

  本次預定推出的《鬼屋魔影:死亡界線》,是繼 2001 年《鬼屋魔影:新夢魘》之後睽違 7 年的系列新作,並冠以初代作原名,配合新一代硬體平台重新打造昔日經典。

◆ 在廣大的城鎮中探索超自然現象之謎

  遊戲故事設定在 2008 年的現代,主角仍舊由愛德華‧坎比(Edward Carnby)擔任。原本和諧的都市,在坎比眼中卻是如同地獄般的景象。玩家將操作坎比穿過紐約中央公園,探索由此所發生的一連串詭異神秘的超自然現象,並揭開隱藏多年的驚人秘密...

◆ 全新進化的物理引擎

  《鬼屋魔影:死亡界線》採用全新的物理引擎,遊戲當中所有的東西和場景幾乎都可以破壞,製作小組打造了一個玩家必須和環境互動的超強場景,玩家可以把所有東西破壞掉,每個碎片都可以讓玩家拾取與使用,並搭配逼真的光影效果來營造真實感受。

◆ 利用環境突破難關

  遊戲當中強調和環境互動的效果,當玩家在逃命時,必須利用建築物或物品掉落的瞬間跳躍或攀爬過去,錯失機會很可能就會導致死亡。而遇到一大群的怪物時,也可以先看看附近有沒有易燃的物品,丟過去之後再射擊或點火,可以把怪物一次殺光。

  而火要怎麼來呢?除了自己製造之外,也可以拿引燃的物品去燒別的物品,不過只有「易燃物」可以點火或取火。當玩家拿著燃燒的物品時,它也會慢慢地燒到你的手,雖然能到處燒東西非常有趣,不過也要注意別不小心讓火燒太大而把自己也燒死。

  另外,玩家還必須充分利用物品中的易燃液體,例如可潑灑汽油,然後讓汽油蔓延一段距離後,點火引燃,這點會在遊戲中許多地方用到,充分利用就能夠輕鬆過關。

◆ 使用各種資源生存下來

  本作當中相當強調生存的概念,遊戲當中將以恐怖和解謎並行。主角身處在龐大的紐約城鎮,除了要解謎之外,就是要如何在充滿怪物的地區求生存。遊戲中所有物品都可以拿取,且許多物品都可以留下來以後再用,不過要特別注意可攜帶的數量是有限的。

  遊戲並具備組合物品系統了,玩家可以把許多物品搭配起來使用,變成一個新的物品。例如當身上有汽油罐時,可以拿刀子把罐子戳破後丟擲出去再點火;或是黏上膠帶貼在特定地方,等怪物經過時射擊罐子引爆,配合上各種不同的道具,變化度相當豐富。

  道具的使用也採用很有趣的方式,當玩家要換道具時,會發現坎比打開他的衣服,在衣服裡有很多內襯,那就是放置各種道具的欄位,所以攜帶度會有很大的限制。當然,有許多地區都必須要使用不同道具的配合才可以通過,大幅度地提升遊戲的解謎成分。

◆ 最深沉的恐懼

  遊戲將透過全新 3D 影情,以「光線」讓玩家充分感受由孤獨、黑暗與沉默所營造的深沉恐懼。遊戲中許多地方都是黑暗到必須使用手電筒或是易燃物品來照明,可見範圍相當有限,無從得知某個發出詭異聲音的方向會出現甚麼讓人嚇破膽的東西...

◆ 國際中文版 6 月下旬恐懼再現 字幕與語音完全中文化

  PC / Xbox 360《鬼屋魔影:死亡界線》國際中文版由英寶格代理,預定 6 月 24 日推出,PC 版定價 1080 元,Xbox 360 版定價 1490 元,特別針對台灣地區製作,除中文字幕外,並由專業配音員錄製中文語音,讓玩家充分享受遊戲內容與劇情所帶來的樂趣。



  中文版並保留英文字幕與語音,喜愛原音的玩家同樣能享受到原汁原味的內容。

I don't worry about it
since 英寶格(infogrames) = Atari
I don't think 代理 will became others

What I worry about is, will the developer includes Chinese when they make the PS3 version
