Sounds simple, sure, but it took years before Spider-Man felt like Spider-Man, and before Hulk was truly let loose. For Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, that key mechanic the developers are going for is the idea of playing as a team. "Marvel has had some fabulous success with its superhero franchises and they can all be singled out to certain key goals -- Spider-Man is about web-swinging, Hulk is about destruction, etc.," says Paul Weaver, senior producer at Visual Concepts. "For us, the focus was not only on making the characters unique to play, but most importantly, allowing them to work as a team, as we believe that is one of the biggest strengths of the Fantastic Four." So naturally, this means Sue Storm can turn invisible, Johnny can fly, Reed can stretch his body, and The Thing can smash stuff. But how will this differ from games like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance that feature various characters, each with their own powers? While we don't know the full extent of how it works, we hear a "fusion attack" system will let characters team up for special maneuvers. For example, if Sue Storm holds up a force shield, and then Johnny Storm throws a fireball at the shield, it will deflect for a special attack. With four-player co-op, there's quite a bit of potential there. For the game's story, you can expect an even split between original elements and things pulled from the movie, which will hopefully make for a nice balance between sticking exactly to a movie plot and avoiding it altogether. As a nice bonus, the first level in the game begins just before the movie. At this point, there's still plenty more that we don't know about the game than what we do, so it should be interesting to see how everything comes together as we find out more. About the video itself, we don't know if it's a CGI cinematic or if it's using the game engine, but it looks a lot like something that could be done realtime. Time will tell...
