據微軟遊戲出版事業總經理 Shannon Loftis 在 E3 上的解說，要做到這個並不容易，花了大把的工程師腦汁，才研究出如何在 Xbox One 裡做一個 Xbox 360 的模擬器。當你把光碟片放進去的時候，Xbox One 就會自動載入模擬器，產生一個 Xbox 360 的 dashboard，然後你就從這個小 dashboard 進入遊戲。在玩 Xbox 360 遊戲時，依然可以使用 Xbox One 的諸多功能，像是串流、DVR、截圖等。除了光碟版之外，數位版也可以相容，同時也可以使用以前的舊存檔呢。

遊戲的相容需要微軟寫程式之外，也需要開發者同意授權確認相容版與原本開發時的目標一致。所以要玩家告訴微軟想要將什麼遊戲帶到 Xbox One 上，微軟會盡量想辦法的囉。

The Xbox 360 had a dedicated spot in millions of living rooms, bedrooms and offices for nearly 10 years, and during that time, players purchased massive libraries of games. However, when the Xbox One launched in 2013, it didn't include the ability to play or transfer Xbox 360 games, a disappointment for many fans. That's why Microsoft's announcement at its E3 showcase was so exciting: The Xbox One is getting backward compatibility this holiday, with a lineup of more than 100 fan-requested Xbox 360 games to start and more to be added as demand warrants. Xbox One backward compatibility runs an Xbox 360 emulator right on the console, which is no easy feat, Microsoft General Manager of Games Publishing Shannon Loftis explains during a chat at E3.

Are you pleased with the response to the announcement of backward compatibility on Xbox One?

It's something that I, as a gamer, have been wanting. Actually, the genesis of backwards compatibility is that gamers asked for it. It took some time for us to figure out how to do it, but we did and the response has been amazingly positive.

How does it work, technologically?

It wasn't easy. It took some pretty dedicated engineering effort and very talented engineers. What they did was they created a software-based 360 emulation within the Xbox One architecture. So, when you put your disc in the drive, we're actually loading up an emulator, and then we put up a little portion of the Xbox 360 dashboard and you use that dashboard to launch into your game. You still have access though to all the great Xbox One features: game streaming, game DVR, screenshots. It works for digital games as well and your saved games do transfer. Gamers have put so much into 360 games, so much passion, energy, time, money, and that value I think is important for us to bring into the Xbox One story.

Will every Xbox 360 game eventually be available via backward compatibility?

It's up to gamers to tell us what they want. We do all the work, but there is a little bit of work and part of that involves talking with the publisher and making sure that this is consistent with their goals for the game as well. So, as gamers ask us, we will deliver.

Xbox One Backward Compatibility is easy to use
The Xbox One Backward Compatibility Beta is available starting June 15 for Xbox preview members. The program will launch broadly in fall 2015.

The digital titles that you own and are part of the Back Compat game catalog will automatically show up in the “Ready to Install” section on your Xbox One. For disc-based games that are a part of the Back Compat game catalog, simply insert the disc and the console will begin downloading the game to your hard drive. After the game has finished downloading, you will still need to keep the game disc in the drive to play.

should be ok to play with 360 user. basically, the x1 becomes x360 emu, even the dashboard returns to 360 one after pressing menu and view button together

the emu is so good that you seems playing 360 directly.

but i dont think it will beat p4 completely as the publisher will not grant bc licence to those remaster games. the scope may be slightly more than the microsoft owned games.

Revealed: How Xbox One Can Play 360 Games via Backward Compatibility
Phil Spencer explains how Microsoft is making classic games playable; Confirms Kinect games won't work.

Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has explained how Xbox 360 game emulation is being achieved on the Xbox One, as well as the ethos behind the company's decision to support legacy content.

Speaking on Giant Bomb's E3 Day One podcast, Spencer said the decision to support Xbox 360 games was made to "make 360 owners look at Xbox One as a safe place to play."

"Millions of people made investments in 360 content," he said. "We thought the right thing to do was to make that content go forward, but we didn't know [how difficult it would be]."

"[Emulation] is hard," admitted Spencer, explaining that the company was dealing with having to harmonise PowerPC architecture with x86.

"The approach that we've taken is to actually emulate the full Xbox 360 hardware layer. So the [operating system] for the 360 is actually running when you run the game," Spencer explained.

"If you watch the game's boot you'll see the Xbox 360 boot animation come up. From a performance standpoint it allows [emulation] to work. We're able to get frame by frame performance equivalents."

"[Xbox Live] thinks you're on a 360, so people have been asking 'hey, why are you playing Mass Effect on the 360?,' I was actually playing on the Xbox One."

Spencer continued to explain that, since the Xbox One thinks it's playing a normal game, features such as streaming and screenshots are supported.

"The 360 games think they're running on the 360 OS, which they are. And the 360 OS thinks its running on the hardware, which it's not, it's running on an emulated VM. On the other side, the Xbox One thinks it's a game. That's why things like streaming, game DVR, and screenshots all work, because it thinks there's just one big game called 360."

Delving deeper, Spencer explained exactly how the emulator packages the Xbox 360 games, and how it compares to Xbox 360's emulation of original Xbox games.

"You download a kind of manifest of wrapper for the 360 game, so we can say 'hey, this is actually Banjo, or this is Mass Effect. The emulator runs exactly the same for all the games.

"I was around when we did the original Xbox [backwards compatibility] for Xbox 360 where we had a shim for every game and it just didn't scale very well. This is actually the same emulator running for all of the games. Different games do different things, as we're rolling them out we'll say 'oh maybe we have to tweak the emulator.' But in the end, the emulator is emulating the 360, so it's for everybody."

Asked about whether Microsoft would require permission from game publishers to adjust game code, Spencer clarified it would not be interfering with code.

"The bits are not touched," he said. "There's some caveats, and as always I like to be as transparent as I can be on this: Kinect games won't work from the 360, because translating between the Kinect sensors is almost impossible."

Finally, the subject of multi-disc games was also addressed. According to Spencer, it's an issue engineers are looking into.

"We're still working on multi-disc," he said. "Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are some of my favourites from the 360. There's actually work in packing a multi-disc into single that requires us to go back and look at the original package on the multiple discs and reconfigure that."

Microsoft announced Xbox One backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 games at its E3 press conference. According to the platform holder digital Xbox 360 titles already purchased via XBLA, as well as retail discs of last-gen titles, will eventually be "natively" playable on Xbox One.

Just when you think Microsoft could do no worse in Japan, the console proves that, yes, it can do even worse. Much worse.

After a dismal Japan launch and then horrible sales, the latest weekly Xbox One sales for Japan are, simply put, awful. During the week of June 8 to June 14, Microsoft sold a hundred Xbox One consoles in Japan. That’s right, one hundred.

Here’s how the sales hardware sales chart shapes up for that week:



This data is from Media Create, which tracks game software and hardware sales in Japan.

Yes, yes, I know that any of the home consoles aren’t exactly tearing up the sales charts, but compare the Xbox One numbers to the other consoles. Then, think about selling a hundred Xbox Ones in a week in a country of over 120 million people? Ouch.

You know, now might be a good time to seriously reconsider even selling the console in Japan.

Microsoft promoted the Xbox One heavily during E3 2015 last week, but the console continues to be a sales disaster in the game-crazy country of Japan. During the week of June 8-14, only 100 Xbox One consoles were sold in Japan, a new low for any version of the console.

By contrast, Nintendo's Wi U, which is a sales disaster in every other part of the world, sold 16,413 units in Japan that week and Sony's PlayStation 4 sold 10,822 units. Even the Vita TV, the cheap set-top box that's known as the PlayStation TV in the US, sold 566 units in Japan last week, over five times what the Xbox One sold.

This is sadly a case of history repeating itself. The previous two Xbox console did not sell well in Japan, despite heavy promotion in that country from Microsoft. In 2014, the company launched the Xbox One in Japan but only sold 23,562 units in that country in its first four days. By contrast, the Xbox 360 sold 62,135 units in just its first two days in 2005 and the original Xbox sold 123,000 units in three days in 2002.
