An estimated total of 50 people died that day. This day was commemorated as the "Day of German Unity" in West Germany until reunification in 1990, when it was moved to October 3.

Press Release: German MP calls on Chancellor Merkel to raise Hong Kong at G20.
On 20 June, Martin Patzelt, a member of the governing Christian Democrat Union and the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid in the German Parliament (Bundestag), called on Angela Merkel to raise concerns about the situation in Hong Kong during the G20 summit.
Mr Patzelt confirmed that he would raise this personally with the German Chancellor. In a statement he says that the Chancellor must raise the issue. Mr Patzelt's comments follow his meeting with Ray Wong Toi Yeung and Alan Li Tung Sing. This is the third time that Mr Patzelt MP met with the two first refugees from Hong Kong. Ray Wong today appeared on a Deutsche Welle TV live show titled: “Hong Kong versus Beijing: Power-grab postponed?” He called for the Chancellor Angela Merkel to raise Hong Kong at G20 meeting next week. He said: "We don't want Hong Kong to become like another city in China."
Patzelt's statement:
"I call on the Hong Kong Government to withdraw, not suspend, the proposed extradition law in the face of the clear opposition of the Hong Kong people.
The young demonstrators who blocked the adoption of the extradition law on 12 June are the defenders of freedom and should be praised for their great courage and remarkable political commitment in the face of the threat of their freedom being restricted. Therefore, charges of insurrection against the demonstrators under the draconian Public Order Ordinance, which are signs of a progressive restriction of the customary civil liberties, should not be brought or should be dropped immediately if necessary.
I condemn the use of rubber bullets and tear gas and the excessive use of force by the police against demonstrators and journalists. A full public inquiry into the monitoring of the demonstrations should be carried out by an independent body.
I will ask Chancellor Angela Merkel to raise the issue of Hong Kong with President Xi Jingping at the G20 meeting."
