LG.Philips develops world's first 52-inch TFT-LCD

SEOUL - LG.Philips LCD Co said on Wednesday that it has developed the world's first 52-inch digital TV TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) after its development of 42-inch ones in October.

Featuring 2.07 million pixels and high resolution able to show perfect high-definition images, the product boasts the world's most advanced display technology, the company said. Its number of pixels is twice that of standard-definition LCDs and seven times that of high-definition products currently on the market, it said.

The LCD also has the world's widest viewing angle of 176 degrees using Super-IPS technology and represents a total of 16.7 million clear colors.

The Korean-Dutch venture said 25 experts had worked to develop the product since February and it plans to mass-produce it from the second half of next year. It is also scheduled to display the newly developed LCD at the 2003 Consumer Electric Show slated for January in Las Vegas.

LG.Philips holds a 35.5 percent share of the world's TV LCD market as at the end of the second quarter of this year, second only to Japan's Sharp Electronics Corp, which takes 48.8 percent, according to US flat-panel market research firm DisplaySearch. TMdisplay, an LCD joint venture of Toshiba Corp and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, and Samsung Electronics Co followed with a 6.8 percent share each.
