Vivendi (once the owner of Blizzard, later Activision Blizzard),[13] searching for a new games publisher property has started investing in both Ubisoft and Gameloft.[14] The brothers in charge of Ubisoft and Gameloft, Yves Guillemot and Michel Guillemot[15] respectively, view the investments as a hostile takeover attempt,[16] and are raising capital from within the family[17] and from Canadian investors[18] to maintain control of the companies. As of 8 June 2016, Vivendi has acquired a controlling stake in Gameloft. In news from 11 September 2016 Yves Guillemot is set to buy an additional 3.5% of Ubisoft shares to raise his stake to 12.5% to attempt to block a takeover from Vivendi. Yves has been attempting to lobby other shareholders to prevent them selling their shares to Vivendi.

On July 25, 2013, Activision Blizzard announced the purchase of 429 million shares from owner Vivendi for $5.83 billion, dropping the shareholder from a 63% stake to 11.8% by the end of the deal in September.[35] At the conclusion of the deal, Vivendi was no longer Activision Blizzard's parent company,[36] and Activision Blizzard became an independent company as a majority of the shares became owned by the public. Bobby Kotick and Brian Kelly retained a 24.4% stake in the company overall. In addition, Kotick remained the president and CEO, with Brian Kelly taking over as chairman.[35] On October 12, 2013, shortly after approval from the Delaware Supreme Court, the company completed the buyback, along the lines of the original plan.[37] Vivendi sold half its remaining stake on May 22, 2014, reducing its ownership to 5.8%.[38]
