MechAssault 2 Lives
Microsoft announces a sequel to the popular mech game.

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/490/490247p1.html

February 05, 2004 - Back in 2002 when Microsoft was launching Xbox Live a title called MechAssault became the unofficial flagship game for the online service. It included voice support, split screen and system link, tons of downloadable content and a single player mode. The game was a hit on all fronts and gave Xbox Live a boost in credibility the service needed for a successful launch.

It should come as no surprise that Microsoft Game Studios has announced that MechAssault 2 is currently in the works. The game is once again being developed by Day 1 studios and should be ready for the 2004 Holiday season.

In addition to the BattleMechs from the first game MechAssault 2 will allow the player to pilot a new line of combat vehicles including Tanks, Vertical TakeOff and Landing Craft, and BattleArmor. In the original game battle armor was a small jet powered craft that offered minimal armor and firepower. Its usefulness on the battle field was limited to its slight advantage in maneuverability. In the sequel, Microsoft is promising that BattleArmor will allow players to climb buildings, ride the Vertical Landing Craft and most importantly, hijack enemy Mechs. The ability to take over enemy equipment could add an interesting new level of strategy to online battles. Microsoft also plans on fleshing out the single player game by promising a deeper storyline and greater NPC interaction.

Check back for more info on MechAssault 2 as it becomes available.

MechAssault 2 Interview
Get the freshest details straight from the battlemech's mouth.

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/496/496...html?fromint=1

March 03, 2004 - As you'll soon find out in the witty question-and-answer session below, MechAssault 2 is almost guaranteed to be better than the original MechAssault, mainly because of that all-powerful numeral "2" hanging off the edge of the title. While it seems many of the details of what's new and better about MA2 are still closely guarded secrets, there's certainly no lack of enthusiasm on the part of Microsoft and Day 1 about the game's potential.

IGN had a chance to lob a handful of questions at the producer for MechAssault 2, TJ Wagner, a name that turns out to be as appropriate for a videogame industry insider as it would be for a hard-charging Los Angeles police officer with great hair. We don't know if Wagner is hard-charging or not, but we do know that the answers below will get you at least a little bit excited about the upcoming BattleMech game. And that's what's important.

IGN:How will the story mode of MA2 be improved over the original?

TJ Wagner: You mean besides starting off with a more compelling story? The main difference is that we will be moving all the storytelling aspects into the game and the story will be told to the player through the characters and events they experience. There will be no more long text briefings in a static UI. The goal is to immerse the player into the BattleTech universe like never before and have them experience the devastation that comes from centuries of war.

IGN: What new weapons will be introduced?

TW:They are still a highly guarded secret at the moment but I guarantee they will be cool. I can tell you that the new BattleArmor will have a shoulder fired mortar weapon that is a blast to use. The BattleArmor is quick and agile so you'll be able to jump, climb buildings and dodge shots while lobbing mortar rounds at your enemies and ducking behind objects for cover. One of the new 'Mech weapons you'll see is the plasma-based flamethrower. It already looks awesome and is a blast to watch the AI reactions to being on fire.

IGN: Will there be new mechs of any kind or just the tanks, VTOLs and BattleArmor?

TW: Of course, it is MechAssault 2 after all, we've gotta have new 'Mechs.

IGN: If MA2 misses its Holiday 2004 release could it end up on a future version of Xbox?

TW: There are big guys blocking the exits to ensure that won't happen.

IGN: What new online features will be introduced in MA2?

TW: Another highly guarded secret at this time. I can tell you that we will be supporting many of the new cool features announced for Live this fall.

IGN: Will we see more objective-based team games for Xbox Live?

TW: Definitely, they were a huge hit for MechAssault with the downloadable content so you'll see more team and objective based gameplay. Adding the vehicles and new roles has a ton of potential for these game types. The VTOL will allow you to supply your team with that much needed salvage for the final assault, drop BattleArmor'd teammates into the enemy base to capture the flag, fly teammates to hard to reach areas where the prized 'Mech can be found and drop turrets into a crucial choke point when your team goes on the offensive. All those from only one of the vehicles, the possibilities are staggering.

IGN: MechAssault was one of the flagship titles for Xbox Live when it launched. Will MA2 try to do the same thing and attempt to represent the ultimate Live experience?

TW: You bet! While I cannot talk about it yet, plans are in the works for something very big and unique for MechAssault 2 on Live. Again, those guys at the door are really big after all.

IGN: Will the mechs be customizable?

TW: Nope. We are expanding the abilities of the 'Mechs to make their roles more unique so you'll need to take the best 'Mech for the job instead of always the biggest one. We are still focused on keeping the barrier to entry low for the game while keeping the action high and fast paced.

IGN: How many players will be able to join online games?

TW: Still in the testing phase but larger team games is our goal. I played the first ever MechAssault 2 multiplayer game recently with more than eight people and it was a blast. You're the first person I've told that to so keep it under wraps.

IGN: Will MA2 be more arcadey and streamlined like its predecessor or more inline with the traditional Battletech universe?

TW: MechAssault was a huge success and we want to make it even bigger. We are keeping the fast-paced action and massive destruction in the forefront. We are taking you out of the 'Mech to let you accomplish goals in new and exciting ways and to show you just how big and powerful these beasts are. The first time you see an Atlas stomp past you on the battlefield, you're going to say "Holy (censored)!"

IGN will have more on MechAssault 2 in the coming weeks and months.

MechAssault 2 Q&A
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/...w_6091009.html

The original MechAssault stood as one of the best reasons to get Xbox Live when the game launched in November of 2002. The fast-paced, arcade-style game put an accessible spin on the Mech Warrior universe that had an undeniable appeal. The impressive visuals were complemented by a good array of game modes, including Xbox Live multiplayer, which ensured that players kept coming back. For the sequel, Microsoft and developer Day 1 Studios are cooking up more than just a "by the numbers" sequel. Mech Assault 2 sounds as though it's going to be fully loaded and then some. We talked to producer TJ Wagner about what to expect from the upcoming game, which is due later this year.

GameSpot: How satisfied were you with the original MechAssault?

TJ Wagner: Overall, we were very pleased. MechAssault is the second-most-played game on Xbox Live (since Microsoft launched the service), and the feedback on the overall game has been exceptional. Ultimately, developers are judged on how their products sell, and in Day 1's case, we feel good about the financial results. We know we can do even better, and we will.

What would we like to do better? Every time a game is released, a development team wishes they could have a little more time to tweak a few aspects of the game. MechAssault is no different. The single-player experience would have benefited from more gameplay variety, and the storytelling needed to have more impact and polish.

GS: How did these feelings affect the development of MA2?

TW: We are improving every aspect of the game for MechAssault 2. The game is deeper and requires more skill to get good, but it's just as easy to pick up and play. The new vehicles add the gameplay variety we were striving for and offer the player a significant opportunity to use cooperative tactics. In MechAssault, we developed our game engine while working on the product. With MechAssault 2, the engineers have more development time and are adding some incredible lighting, special effects capability, and optimizations to ensure the game kicks ass visually.

GS: What were some of the key elements you felt needed to be included in MA2, from the start of development, and why?

TW: Getting up close and seeing the mechs from a human's point of view is incredibly cool. We had to get the player out of the mech to experience just how awesome these huge war machines are. Adding new elements to the game--like the BattleArmor's ability to jack an enemy mech or the transport-salvage-distribution capabilities of the VTOL--have broadened MechAssault 2's appeal. Sure, MechAssault 2 will be an awesome mech game, but we are offering so much more. We wanted MechAssault 2 to provide the player more opportunities for unique tactics and new cooperative strategies. So far, our early testing indicates that we have hit the mark.

GS: What's new this year?

TW: We've talked a little about the BattleArmor and its jacking capabilities, but it can do much more. It can climb buildings with its powerful claw, and it comes equipped with a mortar cannon that requires some skill to use effectively. However, it packs a serious, area-affect punch. The VTOL drives like nothing else in the game. It'll take some practice, but it can transport up to two BattleArmors into the thick of a fight or into the enemy's base. It also can collect and drop salvage to needy teammates in multiplayer.

The tanks can operate in tighter quarters than mechs, and MechAssault 2 provides plenty of interesting opportunities for players to show off their cooperative techniques and hit-and-run tactics. We have released information on the Raptor, with it's all new flamethrower. This weapon is devastating up close. Trust me. Keep this speedster at a distance, if you can. Other mechs and vehicles will be discussed in the near future. Stay tuned.

GS: What mechs will make it into this year's game?

TW: You will see many of your favorites from MechAssault, but we've redone the graphics and capabilities for several of the mechs. Again, more info to follow.

GS: What's the game's story layout?

TW: All I can tell you at this point is that it is a continuation of the first game. You are stationed on a quiet trade planet with your crew--which consists of Natalia and Foster--when suddenly all hell breaks loose. Add a fearsome enemy, new technology, and a little mystery mixed with betrayal, and I've already said too much. In the last game, you were trapped on one planet, so in this one, we are going to let you travel quite a bit more.

GS: How are the graphics being improved?

TW: Oh yeah! The game is looking awesome. It is a serious upgrade to the MechAssault engine. We are going to push the Xbox and push it hard. During the development of the game, it is easy to get used to looking at the graphics and taking the advancements for granted. Last week, we booted up MechAssault side by side with MechAssault 2. It is a shocking improvement. Destruction, lighting, effects, frame rate--it is all better.

GS: Name one critique commonly made about the first MechAssault, and tell us how you're addressing it in MA2.

TW: The story was thin, and you only met the main characters at the beginning of the game in the opening cinema. People wanted more, so in MechAssault 2 we are telling you the story (in-game) through the characters you are aligned with and meet along the way.

GS: Will there be downloadable content? Is the plan to make it free or pay?

TW: Microsoft Game Studios will be making a decision on this, and as we're told, no decision has been made at this time.

GS: What can we look forward to seeing at E3?

TW: Bring your "A" game to the convention, because we are bringing the new Live experience to the party!

MechAssault 2 Single-Player Hands-On
The kick ass mech game of the year? Duh.

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/558/558475p1.html

October 20, 2004 - Wow. Simply, wow. The original MechAssault was a good action game that benefited greatly from being an Xbox Live launch title. However, with two years having passed, a simple rehash for a sequel would not cut it. Frankly, if MechAssault 2 were merely the first game in a prettier package, we would be scoffing at it. Instead, after playing a few hours of the single-player game, all I can say is: Wow.

MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf is superior to the original on just about every front. The multiplayer is bigger, more dynamic, and more robust -- especially with the inclusion of the persistent galaxy provided in Conquest mode. The graphics have been vastly improved with greater detail and varied environments. Forget the lava pits and snow levels in the first MechAssault, Lone Wolf offers up an amazing jungle to tear up along with many other worlds. The single-player is smarter, tougher, and more involving. Developer Day 1 has not been sitting on its hands for the past two years -- MechAssault 2 is just plain cool and easily the best game coming out the last Tuesday of the year.
Though I've seen single-player and played multiplayer before, until today I had never had the opportunity to sit through the single-player campaign from the get-go. The campaign takes place a few years after the events of the first game and the benefits of the new technology found at the conclusion of the first game have resulted in the new Battle Armor. This personal armor comes with jet propulsion, lasers, and a mortar blast. It may sound a bit like the Elemental, but it's far more effective. You can actually win battles with big mechs in this bad boy and it has several nifty applications which you are taught in your first mission.

With the city under siege, you much defend against numerous tanks, battleships, helicopters, and mechs attacking the city. The mortar helps a lot here, as a direct hit can take out a tank and a few good shots can down a middleweight mech. Learning the proper arc and strength for a mortar lob takes a bit of time, but you have ample enemies to practice arm in the first level.

You'll also get a taste of climbing buildings, which is easy and fun. Just vault towards it and press A to dig your claw into the wall. Then boost up and hit A again to "climb" the wall. That claw comes in handy a lot, as it also lets you hang from VTOLs (where you can then fire down at enemies). The coolest little claw move, though, is the nuerojack. Get anywhere near an enemy mech, hit A, and you will latch onto their back. A mini-game begins, you versus the AI as button commands pop on screen. Hit them quickly and you will override the mech and can then take it over, if you're too slow, you will be rejected and tossed off.

It's not enough just to jack a mech, as I found out early on, you need to make sure you are safe to get in. See, you can't get in a mech without first getting out of your Battle Armor, leaving you quite vulnerable. Any shot from a tank or enemy mech will kill you outside your Battle Armor, so get out and get into your newly acquired mech as quickly as possible.

Check out the warping on the explosion.

The first few levels of single-player take you from the city and into the jungle. The cut-scenes between each mission show a more interesting story this time around and visually the in-game models are about as good as you could ask for, so it's actually nice to watch the story unfold.

MechAssault 2 does a great job of offering scale. When you are in your Battle Armor, an Atlas towers over you and the city actually looks significant. Heck, even in a big mech, the skyscrapers are still far above your head, as they should be. And now buildings have a true skeletal structure so that they degradate before imploding, unlike in the first MechAssault which offered cool destruction but no real in-between phase.

While the city looks nice, the jungle missions are what really sold me on MechAssault 2. In the jungle, one of your missions is to hang on a VTOL in your Battle Armor and then drop into an enemy base to steal a mech. This gets a bit crazy, as there are basically dropped into a hive full of angry, angry bees and your goal is to steal their honey.

Though the jungle shows a bit of the visual limitations of MechAssault 2, with some extra fog to hide the draw in, artistically it's unlike anything seen in the first game. It's so cool to ride a VTOL over the jungle, shooting troops below. I wish Day 1 would license the Ride of the Valkyrie, because it makes me want a little Apocalypse Now.

The single-player is longer than the first and already a much better experience. Hopefully it carries through to the end. We'll offer glimpses of later levels as we approach MA 2's December 28 release date. For now, check out some of the new pics and movies by clicking the link below.
