Rime is a new PlayStation 4 game from Spanish developer Tequila Works, shown for the first time at Gamescom today.
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which a once powerful civilization has been brought to ruin. Sony showed a short footage reel in which a child-like character explores a pretty world, reminiscent of last year's PlayStation 3 hit Journey and PlayStation 2 classic Ico.
Madrid-based Tequila Works is best known for its Xbox 360 horror-sideways scroller Deadlight.

There was a fantastic range of indie games announced for the PS4 during yesterday's Sony Gamescom presser, but Rime has scrambled to the top of the pile for this Ico fan.
Coming from Spanish outfit Tequila Works, this gorgeous game blends the colourful art-style of Zelda: The Wind Waker with the atmospheric, lonely cliff-side castle ruins seen in Ico. Little else is known about the game at this stage, but we'd strongly advise you check out the trailer below if you haven't seen it already.
Key staff members at Tequila Works have been keen to praise Sony, citing the big company's respect for the "crazy" and "beautiful." Tequila Works CEO and Creative Director, Raul Rubio Munarriz said:
"In just a few months of collaborating we can see we have found our perfect partner with SCE Worldwide Studios Europe on Rime. They are completely supportive of our process and vision and truly collaborate in the true sense of the word. Rime is something very personal. When we develop a game we continually ask ourselves 'Where is the Crazy? Where is the Beautiful?' and clearly SCE's commitment with Indies on PS4 respects this and welcomes our originality, which is the best beginning we could imagine."
Rime's Art Director Luz Sancho added:
"RIME is an adventure game that is totally personal and engaging. Our goal is to immerse the player in innovative and emotional ways as he has never seen. What better partner than Sony to push the visual and gameplay experience boundaries PS4 has to offer?! It is a dream to partner with Sony on RIME and truly benefit from everything!"

More as we hear it, fingers crossed for a release some time this year too.

Tequila Works Creative Director Talks PlayStation 4 Exclusive ‘Rime’

One of the most interesting games to be revealed at this years Gamescom event was Rime; when it was unveiled at the Sony press conference and announced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Rime is created by Spanish developer Tequila Works, who released their debut project Deadlight last year during Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade promotion on Xbox 360.
Rime’s debut trailer took many by surprise due to its astounding beauty, vibrant landscape and evocative orchestral sound.
CEO & Creative Director at Tequila Works, Raúl Rubio, recently took the time to answer some questions regarding his studio’s latest project.






Analog Addiction: How excited was your team to finally release Rime’s debut trailer at Gamescom? Obviously it must have been a huge moment for the team.
Raúl Rubio: It’s like coming out of the (creative) closet! We were relieved to share with the world this feeling we have kept in secret for so long! Really excited and the best start we could imagine.

Analog Addiction: After watching your debut trailer I got a strong sense of classics like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and even The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker. Were any of these titles inspiration for Rime? If not, what titles inspired your team to create it?

Raúl Rubio: That’s a compliment for us. Movies like Jason and the Argonauts, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, the work of Joaquín Sorolla, Salvador Dalí and Giorgio de Chirico have been our main influences. Being compared to those giants is simply awesome. All of them look simple on the surface but they are deeply evocative and moving experiences that touch you deep inside. That’s the kind of experience we aim to achieve so maybe we are following the right path.


Analog Addiction: Your previous title Deadlight has a very strong emphasis on story. Will we also see a strong on narrative in Rime?

Raúl Rubio: Rime tells a story with no words. The environmental narrative is key because the island itself is a character. And that’s all I can tell for now

Analog Addiction: Rime is an open-world adventure game, with that being said will players have full access to the open-world environment from the start of the game?

Raúl Rubio: This is not a “flat” sandbox. You are required abilities to progress. If you lack them, it will be really difficult to traverse the island!

Analog Addiction: Visually Rime is a drastic change from the dark, realistic world of Deadlight. Was this a change your team felt was best, rather than working on a title with a similar art style?

Raúl Rubio: We always aim to offer unique visual experiences. Rime is all about light just like Deadlight was about darkness. Life in Deadlight was defined by the silhouettes that the light left. There was light in darkness, beauty in ugliness and life in death. Rime is just the opposite.


Analog Addiction: Personally the musical score that accompanied the debut trailer was beautiful, it really set a whimsical tone for the world being shown. May I ask who you have doing the score? And how important getting that great magical sound was for Rime?

Raúl Rubio: David García, the composer of Deadlight, made the debut track. Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) is composing the OST as well. Sound is everything in Rime. You’ll eventually understand what I mean.

Analog Addiction: From the trailer it looks like there will be traversal elements as we explore, what other methods of gameplay should we expect to see from Rime? Any games similar?

Raúl Rubio: As I said before, traversal is key to move around the island. Not just running and jumping.


Analog Addiction: I also have to ask, at the end of the trailer we see some shadowy creatures heading towards our character, before they start waving fire to keep them away; before we end with a massive enemy of some sort. Any details on what these enemies are? Or what other methods can be used to protect yourself?

Raúl Rubio: Light is essential in Rime. And when night comes, light goes away… and there are things wandering in the dark… Remember, you are a young helpless boy, not a muscled hero. That said, people just take for granted so many things about good and evil.

Analog Addiction:We know Rime will be releasing on PlayStation 4 as a first-party exclusive, but your studio has previously worked closely with Microsoft. What made this change come about? Was there a reasoning behind PlayStation 4 being its destination?

Raúl Rubio: I’m not the person who you should be asking that question. What I can say is that we are delighted to be part of it. PlayStation 4 and XDev are the perfect match for an indie studio like Tequila Works. They really understand entertainment.


Analog Addiction: How have you found developing for PlayStation 4? Has it been an easy process getting used to a next generation system?

Raúl Rubio: It’s really straightforward. We always aim for the best in terms of visual quality, and PlayStation 4 has everything we need to achieve our goal.

Analog Addiction: Does your team have an expected time-frame for Rime’s release?

Raúl Rubio: Too soon to announce anything. Please be patient.

Analog Addiction: Rime has gathered a lot of excitement, but where can fans go to follow every single thing Rime related?

先月閉幕したgamescom 2013のプレスカンファレンスにてPlayStation 4向けタイトルとして正式発表された『Rime』 ですが、改めてセルシェードで描かれる特徴的なグラフィックを披露した公式トレイラーおよびスクリーンショットが欧州PlayStation.Blogに て公開されました。『Rime』は横スクロールアクション『Deadlight』の開発元として知られるTequila Worksが手掛けるPlayStation 4向けのタイトルで、古代文明の遺跡を探索するオープンワールド環境のあるアドベンチャーゲームとなっています。









マントを着けた青年が歩む姿や儚げなBGMなどはどことなく『ICO』を想起させるところですが、クリエイティブディレクターのRaul Rubio Munarriz氏によれば本作は技術面よりもプレイ体験にフォーカスしており、プレイヤーが如何に自身の創作に対し息吹を吹き込み自由にするかが描かれ る作品になると紹介されています。

Tequila Works defends Microsoft: "Rime couldn't adapt"

Studio reaction to revealing forms allegedly leaked to internet. Microsoft was their first partner and they revealed it a while back.
Following the appearance of the supposedly leaked documents that reveal part of the pitch forms for a "Echoes of Siren" project leading to headlines such as Rime could have been a Xbox One exclusive yesterday, Gamereactor reached out to Tequila Works for comment.
In response, the Madrid based studio doesn't seem particularly uncomfortable or alarmed by the appearance of these documents, nor by a change of partner that, in fact, they openly admitted long ago. While they do not usually comment on rumours, one of its members wanted to clarify that "in their [MS] defense, it has to be said that they didn't passed on it at first; project had been greenlighted and only when Xbox One plans made public and project couldn't adapt, it was decided not to carry on and we moved it with other publishers".
The team is still working hard on an adventure meant to be special and emotional to show something new as soon as possible, as with Rime they claim that "we have a lot to prove."

Create a game is not just make the game, at least if you want to publish it on XBLA or PSN. First of all you have to fill a document called Concept Submission Form. This text should summarize your project in the following areas: company and funding overview, game genre, design pillars (key elements that drive the design of your title), key moments (highlights. In some way you are to going to spoil the person that has to review your proposition) and risk evaluation.
There are more points, but these ones could sum up your project to the publisher.
Sticking to the article, Tequila Works presented Echoes of Siren, from now on Rime (official name to this project unveiled at E3 2013) to Microsoft. Rime could have been a Xbox One exclusive instead a PlayStation 4 one, although Tequila Works showed Rime to MS, the company dismissed the project. Sony approved its budget and that was the start of a new exclusive for PS4.

The Concept Submission Form is the first path in a long journey to achieve your goal: obtain financial support and a publisher for your game. I will divide the most important parts of that document, the document that Tequila Works had to send to Microsoft to reckon the viability of Rime.
1. Company Overview: that’s a description of your company upon what you have done before.

2. Funding Overview: being straightaway, how much money would you need to create your product?

3. Game Genre.

4. The Elevator Pitch: an excerpt of the essence of your game in one sentence.

5. Design Pillars: key elements of your creation.


6. Initiatives: how the concept roll out along the game. In this case, I will just stand out this part.

7. Risk Evaluation: hurdles in your development.

With no sign of Team ICO’s hotly anticipated The Last Guardian on the horizon, the responsibility may fall with Spanish studio Tequila Works’ gorgeous RIME to provide us with the PlayStation 4 tearjerker that we deserve. And as part of a semi-promotional Develop article, the indie outfit has confirmed that it’s hoping to convey “deep emotions” throughout the exclusive adventure.
“Rime is a very personal project, and we wish to create deep emotions through the visual and physical experiences of gameplay rather than cutscenes,” said creative director Raúl Rubio. “It has to evoke wonder, as if looking through the eyes of a child.” The visionary continued that Unreal Engine 4 – which is powering the game – has allowed the team to realise its goals.
He explained: “For us, visuals are not only to see, but also to feel emotionally. Unreal Engine 4 allows us to translate influences from Joaquín Sorolla, Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, and even Studio Ghibli into something that expresses our artistic vision in a way that can be experienced by the player.”
We suspect that we'll be seeing a lot more of the developer’s progress at E3 later this year, alongside fellow first-party funded indie titles such as Shadow of the Beast and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture.

PS4 ‘Rime’ To Involve Objectives, Visual Guidance & ‘Mood’

According to the Linkedin page from Rime’s lead designer Nicklas Andersen the upcoming third-person adventure for the PS4 involves objectives, non-player characters, visual guidance, narrative, puzzles, mechanics and ‘mood’.

Rime was first shown off during Sony’s 2013 Gamescom press briefing. During their press conference at Gamescom 2014, Sony revealed a new trailer for the PS4 exclusive. Since then both Sony and developer Tequila Works, have been rather quiet about the game. Recently I learned that Tequila Works’ small studio shut down. Luckily the game’s former level designer, Fredrik Henriksson told me that Tequila Works is working hard and development on the game is still underway, according the game’s official Twitter account.




No combat involved – Rime is more personal

The game will involve no combat as the title revolves around a little child. In an interview with website Polygon, Rime’s creative director Raúl Rubio Munárriz stated:
I can tell you that there is no combat. That was something that was intentional from the beginning. Your avatar is a little child. It makes so no sense for you to find a legendary sword or whatever and then start killing monsters. There are very good games that do that but Rime is not one of those. We wanted to make Rime more personal. Something that is general enough that anyone can enjoy it as a tale, a fable or a rhyme but is also deep enough that it can be personal and can touch you deep inside you.
The game will not include any other human characters, apart from the game’s main character. According to Rubio The Island itself plays a vital part in the game, and the team doesn’t look at the game’s story in terms of NPCs giving out quests.
The island itself is a character. The ambition was always that the island would tell the story. It is reacting to your presence. The seagulls and boars react to your presence because you shouldn’t be there. You are a trespasser.


The Island, visual guidance and ‘mood’ in the game

So while the game won’t include any other human characters, the island itself actually seems to be one of the NPC’s that is mentioned on lead designer Andersen’s Linkedin resume. Apart from puzzles that need to be completed, the game is said to involve objectives that our main character has to complete in order to progress. If Andersen’s resume is to be believed, visual guidance will also play a role in the game. Perhaps the animals in the game will play a role in guiding the young boy on the Island by demonstrating how a certain puzzle can be solved.

Switch owners will wait longer (and pay more) for 'Rime'

The beautiful puzzle adventure game is first coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC on May 26th.

If The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has piqued your interest in whimsical open-world adventure games featuring young men solving puzzles, Rime has you covered. It's coming out on May 26th for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, developer Tequila Words announced in a tweet. But Nintendo Switch owners are going to have to wait -- and pay $10 more.

Rime was supposed to be a PS4 exclusive when it debuted in 2013. But, after buying full rights to the game back from Sony, Tequila Works decided to bring it to other platforms, most notably the Switch. It's one of more than 60 indie games supposedly coming to Nintendo's new console this year. In today's tweet, however, the studio said a release date for the Switch version "will be announced soon."

Rime will be available both digitally and at retail for $29.99 on the PS4, Xbox One and PC, but it will cost $39.99 when it comes to the Switch. We've reached out to Nintendo and Tequila Works to ask about the price difference, and we'll update this story if we hear back.
