Perfect Dark XBLA going online

During E3 it was revealed that Perfect Dark would be making way to the Xbox Live Arcade. Like most XBLA titles, the game will be getting upgrades in the graphics department and will be adding in achievements. However, it looks like a little more will be added to this game than previous titles.

The N64 wasn't online capable back in the day. Thankfully, it appears that the game will be heading online this time around. Microsoft has the game labeled as online multiplayer compatible and will also feature online leaderboards. The multiplayer aspect was always the strongest aspects of Perfect Dark and it looks like it’ll be even better this time around.

Some of you reading this may not be old enough to remember, but Lucasarts used to be as famous for their adventure games as they were for their Star Wars and Indiana Jones licensed properties. The Secret of Monkey Island was one of those games, using the innovative SCUMM engine created by Ron Gilbert. It also marked the writing debut of Tim Schafer, who went on to become the funniest man in video games.

Lucasarts is bringing The Secret of Monkey Island back for XBLA, but with new and improved, hand-painted graphics. Nostalgic fans shouldn’t worry though, since the game is exactly the same at its core.








The Secret of Monkey Island has not only been improved graphically, but also now features real voice acting. Before you purists get fired up, know that the entire cast is made up of the same actors who voiced the later Monkey Island games. Yes, that is the real Guybrush, you’ve just never heard these lines said by Dominic Armato, the guy who voiced him.







Since the game has voices now, and a new icon-based interface, there’s no need for the text at the bottom of the screen representing your actions and movements. This gives a lot more real estate on the screen to the visuals which really do look amazing. Mimicking the art style of the later games, The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition somehow manages to be new and different yet faithful to the canon. This is important, because fans of the Lucasarts adventures are a rabid bunch.

As an example, one of the small little quirks of the game that has stuck in the craw of some of them over the years has now been “fixed”. The game occasionally switches to a close-up view of characters when you’re talking, resulting in a higher-res (though still pixilated) artistic representation of the game. In one scene in the SCUMM bar, there’s a dog in the corner named Spiffy. Spiffy does not have a close up, though in development of the game they made one for him that somehow ended up on the back of the box. This discrepancy has somehow caused controversy with the fans over the years. To make a long story short, Spiffy has a close up now.







The game may look really different now, but Lucasarts knows that hardcore fans are hardcore. That’s why the original look of the game is still present in the code for the new The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition. Even better though, you can now simply hit the back button to switch in between. So if you want to play it the old way you can. Or you can change your mind and go back. Waffle on, gamers.

There’s one other enhancement to the game that shouldn’t step too much on the toes of the old school fans (because they don’t have to use it if they don’t want to) is a hint system. Pressing X gives you a quick hint on where you need to go. Hit it again and get a little more detailed hint. Hit it a third time and get a spoiler hint that tells you exactly what you need to do. This is cool for people who are stuck, who we also like to sometimes call newbs.

The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition is great for the longtime fans of the show who want to play it on their Xbox 360 in beautiful, artistic color on their HDTV. It’s great for the purists too, since the basic game remains un-messed with. But it’s mostly cool for a generation of fans who never got to experience these games and now will. I’m envious of the fun time they’re going to have. Now please get started on Day of the Tentacle Special Edition, Lucasarts.

應該比較接近孖車, 純綷輕鬆大亂鬥吧.

不過話就話免費, 但之後各種追加配件/賽道好似就要俾錢了.

Hands-on: Samurai Shodown: Edge of Destiny

Samurai Shodown: Edge of Destiny, the latest in SNK's long-lived weapons-based fighting game series, feels totally different from its predecessors. The K2-developed fighter doesn't just add 3D graphics to the series more successfully than the version on the short-lived Hyper Neo Geo 64 system -- it adds some 3D movement as well, in the form of a dodge move.

During our quick match, Ignition's Shane Bettenhausen described it as "Samurai Shodown meets Soul Calibur meets Bushido Blade," a classification that aptly encapsulates some of the changes in the game.

Aside from the obvious change in presentation, the controls have been refreshed. There are now buttons for horizontal and vertical slashes, a kick button, and a throw button. Blocking occurs automatically while in a neutral position.

Eleven new characters -- emphasis on the new -- have joined the group as well. The left side of the character select screen features 11 favorites from the series, including characters like Ukyo and Nakoruru, while the right side features a rather fanciful international cast of 13 new characters, who broadly parody the foreign influences that began to affect Japan at the end of the Edo period. For example, Bettenhausen fought as J, best described as an Afro Samurai-alike, and we took control of Gallows, a thick Viking who looks like Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe.

Interestingly, the different characters seemed to have totally different move sets: Gallows' move list was all button combinations, no directional input required -- more of a Soul Calibur type of input than Street Fighter. This move list displayed during one of the loading sequences, which were unfortunately kind of lengthy. Bettenhausen assured us that this was a problem only in the extremely early version of the game we played. To be honest, some of the interstitial art in the loading sequences made us not mind so much.

The Bushido Blade influence -- and also a sort of Guilty Gear influence -- comes in the form of instant-kill moves. In the second round of a match, players can launch a deadly move that instantly (and violently) ends the fight. The particular move unleashed upon our poor Viking involved a horizontal slice across the abdomen, from which issued an amount of blood certain to lead to a Mature rating. This was apparently one of the less brutal finishers, with removal of various body parts possible.

Samurai Shodown: Edge of Destiny is currently scheduled for a November 2009 launch, and will feature Xbox Live compatibility. Bettenhausen confirmed that it will be a 360 exclusive in both North America and Japan (well, sort of -- there's also an arcade machine in Japan).

See screens, new info from XBLA Perfect Dark

We made plenty of new video game friends during E3, but, we still care about our old friends for, as the Girl Scouts remind us, one is silver and the other is gold. Why, just today we checked in on the upcoming XBLA version of Perfect Dark and walked away with a ton of new info.

Perhaps most excitingly, the game will include online multiplayer, according to the Xbox.com listing for it. Also, it's being developed by 4J Studios, which you may know from its PS3 ports of Oblivion and Overlord. Finally, we've got a few screens, which appear to indicate the game hasn't gotten too much sprucing up. What do you think?

Penalty of Heroes
Penalty of Heroes is an old school side scrolling arcade hack ’n slash game, much like Golden Axe mixed with Secret of Mana. It takes advantage of the power of the Xbox 360 in order to show off a mix between 2D and 3D, using modern shaders and effects.

Penalty of Heroes takes place in the world of Nimo where you control four young warriors, either by yourself in single player mode or with the help from up to three of your friends in co-op mode. Fight your way through ten levels containing hordes of enemies, big bosses and an engaging narrative. You will have unique characters with different magic powers and weapons, as well as a customizable power up system to aid you on the journey to find out the price of becoming a hero. Sam & Max Save XBLA Next Week
All six episodes of Season 1 arrive at once.

June 11, 2009 - Telltale's new Sam & Max adventures have been available on PC for a couple years now and on Wii since last year. Now it's Xbox Live Arcade's turn, as the entire first season of Sam & Max Save the World will be available next Wednesday, June 17. The package will include the six episodes previously known as Sam & Max Season 1, enhanced with achievements, widescreen visuals, and Xbox 360-friendly controls.

Sam & Max Season 1 was awarded Best PC Adventure Game of 2007 by IGN. The collection will set you back $20 on XBLA, which works out to less than $3 an episode.

June 11, 2009 - Along with the announcement of XNA Game Studio 3.1 came the reveal of a new name.

Xbox Live Community Games will now be know as Xbox Live Indie Games.

The name change was done in part by community feeback as well as to increase "understanding and discoverability" of the games. The announcement also stated user ratings will finally be available!

These updates will officially be coming this July.

This week, Xbox Live Arcade gets not one, but two genres that rarely see the light of day on consoles. First, we've got the collectible card game, Magic the Gather: Duels of the Planeswalkers. Unlike the weird Magic title on the original Xbox -- which played something like a weird monster summoning / volleyball hybrid -- Planeswalkers sticks to the traditional card game, which should make fans mighty happy. The game will deal 800 ($10) damage to your wallet.

Next, we have the XBLA debut of the Sam & Max adventure series, Sam & Max Save the World. Save the World is actually the first season of the Sam & Max episodic series that has been available on PC and Wii for some time now. That's six episodes of comedy gold for 1600 ($20). For those keeping score, that's the same price as the PC version and $10 cheaper than the Wii version.
