The Spike TV Video Game Awards are just a week away, but the news is already starting to flow from the show. The folks behind the broadcast have been promoting the fact that a PlayStation 3 exclusive would debut there, and today, a teaser trailer for that game -- The Last of Us -- has been posted.



It's not much to go on as it uses real footage from various riots and tragedies -- a September 11th clip jumped out at me -- but it sounds like some kind of post-apocalyptic title based on the narrator wishing for normal parts of everyday life. The website for The Last of Us features another video that's just an ant crawling around on a plant.

Sony teases zombie horror The Last Of Us

Sony appears to be planning the surprise reveal of a brand new zombie game, possibly at the Spike VGA awards on Saturday, as the first details are teased on the official website.


Some serious zombie trouble is brewing
Organisers of the VGA awards - a US-only television event that has inexplicably become one of the most important venues for new annoucement in the gaming calendar - have previously promised 'A PS3 exclusive you won't believe'.

This was initially taken to be the already leaked Super Smash Bros. clone Title Fight, and although that might still be the case Sony also seem to have something on the boil called The Last Of Us.
Although the game already has an official website all it features is some live action footage and a voiceover referring to some undefined contagious outbreak.

There's also footage of an ant being impregnated by plant spores, which causes it to want to climb a tree and then have the fungus grow out the back of its head (you may have seen it mentioned on QI recently, here's the Wikipedia page).
Rumours from PSM3 magazine suggest that The Last Of Us is only a tagline and that the game is actually called Until Dawn. It's suggested that it's a more serious take on a zombie apocalypse, with a tone similar to the book, and soon to be movie, World War Z.

It's also claimed that the game was originally revealed as a PlayStation Move games and a few seconds of non-descript footage were featured in a trailer at last year's pre-E3 Sony press conference. It's just that Sony never referenced it at the time and so no one noticed.

How much of this is true isn't clear but Sony is clearly brewing some kind of new announcement and it seems like zombies, or at least some sort of global pandemic, is at the heart of it.

Until Dawn a PlayStation Move title?

As you might remember, last April Sony Computer Entertainment of America filed a trade mark for the name "Until Dawn" along with a vague description that read like this: "providing a real-time computer game for others that may be accessed over global and local area computer networks by network users".


Today, thanks to a reliable source, iWaggle3D can add its own piece to the puzzle by letting you know that Until Dawn is apparently going to support the PlayStation Move.

It's unclear at this time whether it's going to support the device exclusively or just be compatible with it, but going by our source, it was apparently mentioned internally as a PlayStation Move title alongside the already revealed Sorcery (which is a "Move only" title).


Stick around for more info as we dig this. In the meantime, we'll apply a Rumor label to this just to be sure you don't get too excited.

[UPDATE] Could it be this mysterious game briefly shown by Sony at the European GDC that took place last year during GamesCom?

See the flashlight? Totally looks like a PlayStation Move game you would call Until Dawn. Perhaps there is reason to get excited after all.

New Last of Us art pieces hint at a world-ending disease

You might have already guessed that Sony's PS3 exclusive The Last of Us was probably about an apocalyptic virus of some kind, just by watching that video released last weekend. And these two new shots that have appeared on the official site don't do much to prove you wrong: One shot shows a forest, with the view pointed up into the sun, and the second, above, pictures a ruined newspaper stand talking about the President addressing a broken nation as "millions more are feared dead or infected," and quarantines breaking in New Mexico while martial law is declared in England.

In short, the world is packed nicely into a handbasket, with some sort of infectious disease filling out the customs-required shipping forms to a final destination of Hell. We've seen the world end lots of times before, but maybe The Last of Us has an artsy new spin on it. We'll likely find out more this weekend at Saturday's Spike Video Game awards, or as the site says, on 12/10/11. Get those surgical masks ready, people.

The Last of Us – First Details Revealed

The first details for the just-unveiled PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us has been revealed.
Firstly, the first official details have been revealed over at Naughty Dog’s official YouTube page.
The game’s protagonists are Joel and Ellie. Joel is a ruthless survivor and Ellie is a young teenage girl who is mature beyond her age. Here are the first details below.

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague. Abandoned cities are being reclaimed by nature and the remaining survivors are killing each other for food, weapons and whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

Secondly, the debut trailer for the game can be viewed below, which showcases the ‘teenage girl’ – as described in the official details above – and Joel who fight off creatures infected by a ‘modern plague’.

You may have been surprised by the announcement that Naughty Dog is creating a new PlayStation 3 exclusive titled The Last of Us. After all, the company has been completely immersed in the development of Uncharted 3, which just wrapped up a little more than a month ago.
So, how was Naughty Dog able to develop both games at once? This was made possible because a separate, second team has been working on the new game.

I guess the real Ellen Page is too expensive then. Better spend their budget on actually making the game instead of signing up a more famous actress.

I wonder if they can release it in 2012.
