E3 06: Heavy Rain Impressions
We take a look at one of the more fascinatingly perplexing demos at Sony's PlayStation 3 display at E3 2006.

LOS ANGELES--It's hard to nail down precisely what it is about the demo of developer Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain that makes it so beguiling. On display amid Sony's onslaught of PlayStation 3 demos at E3 2006, Hard Rain sits alone at a single video screen on the second floor of the display. The demo title card reads: "Hard Rain: The Casting," but this subtitle seems less indicative of anything relating to the game itself, but more to the fact that the demo itself is actually a "virtual actor" casting session. It's a very bizarre demo, but we'd expect nothing less from the developers of last year's best adventure game, Indigo Prophecy. Forgive us in advance for not being able to comment on the dialogue or audio of this demo, as the din of E3 made it impossible to make out anything but a few scattered words. We watched the demo from beginning to end, however, and played around with the few controllable elements that were available.

The demo begins with a blurry first-person shot of a woman standing in an innocuous white room. In the middle of the room sits a single stool. She walks over to it and sits down, and we realize that the first-person view is from the perspective of a camera man, filming a young actress as she auditions for a role, presumably for this game, Heavy Rain. The character model of the woman is rather striking. There's a great deal of facial detail, plenty of specific emotions and expressions, and very realistic movement of clothing, hair, and other ancillary details. It's quite realistic.

The woman gathers herself and begins to speak to the camera. Her tone immediately shifts to more serious. She talks and talks, and while she does so, the background completely switches from the innocuous white room to a kitchen. The woman carries on a conversation with the first-person-perspective character, going back and forth across the emotional spectrum. She goes from carrying on a pleasant conversation to exasperation to downright depression over the course of a couple of beats. Things get real, however, the moment she pulls a gun--a very realistically rendered gun, we might add! The woman puts the gun to her head, and begins to sob openly. Tears stream down her face as she pleads with the cameraman. Finally, a more spiteful look crosses her face, and the gun goes from her head to yours...er, the cameraman's. This goes on for a while, with her talking to you, clearly still upset while holding you at gunpoint. Finally, the background shifts back to the white room, and the video camera HUD returns; the woman smiles happily. Sheesh, we hope she got the part, after a display like that.

The really intriguing thing about the Heavy Rain demo is that purportedly, the whole thing was running in real time. Real-time facial expressions, real-time tears, real-time everything. Supporting this claim is the fact that you could kind of manipulate the demo renders. Specifically, you could totally change the color schemes of the scene at will. Sepia tone, black-and-white, night vision, and some other options were available, and simply cycling through them was possible with a single button press. The game was also supposedly running in 1080 HD quality, according to the tag at the bottom of the screen.

It's a real shame we couldn't get a better sense of the dialogue or story or anything to that effect from the demo of Heavy Rain, but seeing the technological possibilities of Quantic Dream's next project still have us very, very intrigued. Considering how unique a game Indigo Prophecy was, we hope for something similarly disarming this time around. We'll be sure to bring you more on Heavy Rain as it becomes available.

以前曾出品過《靛青預言》(幻像殺手)的Quantic Dream正與索尼合作開發一款高標準的角色扮演/冒險遊戲大作《Heavy Rain》。


相關單位以前曾散發過幾張圖片,然後就悄無聲息了:


現在,一本德國雜誌《Chief》以工作室創立者David Cage的口吻對該作如下描述:

場景
「我不想像GTA那樣弄一個喧鬧的,可四處遊走的大都市,這樣一來遊戲流程就不好控制了;然而,我又偏好大尺度場景,比如充斥著熙攘人群的大賣場或地鐵站,當然,遊戲將充分利用這一點。」

圖像
「大家會有驚喜,(索尼)公司內部評價極佳,這是一部真正的次世代作品,但我們還想在圖像質量上凸現獨到之處,盡我們所能去營造一個具備照片實景效果的世界。」

遊戲
我們曾用《靛青預言》開創了冒險遊戲的新天地,如果玩家對此表示欣賞,我們還將在該類遊戲中應用新手法,以《Heavy Rain》繼續拓展這一領域。

情節
「改作側重於描寫一個普通人在異常境遇下的遭遇,我希望它是一個更注重個人感受的作品。由於我自己是有著兩個兒子的父親,所以我第一個念頭就是作品主題要圍繞著父愛來展開,它不是王子救公主的童話,它與父愛有關。」

「故事裡有四名各不相同的角色,重點在於突出他們各自的感受,『何謂正何謂邪』是故事的關鍵,而它又與個人見解有關……;我相信從道德層面出發會有多重選擇,遊戲將善用這一點,沒有絕對的好與壞,你所要做的就是求得內心的平衡。」

We watched as Madison wandered into the backyard and noticed that the kitchen window was slightly ajar.

(A little gameplay)
Madison kicked some nearby barrels into place so that she could get into the house. Before she entered, a couple of thoughts went on in her head that you can listen to or just move on. Once inside the house, Madison walked around the living room, and we noticed that she could interact with several things in the environment. She could sit on the couch, check out the fireplace, or go through the door to the garage. We were told that you can also explore in narrow spaces and never have to worry about your character getting stuck. In the garage we saw a trail of blood and noticed that there was a garage switch on the left. She headed upstairs and we immediately noticed that the floorboards were creaking. Things started to pick up when Madison discovered a dead body in the tub and then stumbled into a room in which several women had been stuffed.

The rain, the lighting and the colors help set the mood for this short thriller.

Of course, that was the perfect time for the taxidermist to return, and the screen split to show the taxidermist on the left, headed into his home, and Madison on the right as she tried to figure out what to do. The music also picked up here to drive the gravity of the situation as Madison tiptoed slowly across the hall to try to sneak out through the garage. Staying quiet, Madison got out of the house by using the garage switch, and she quickly jumped onto her motorcycle, which took a bit of button mashing before it would start. She finally got her helmet on and sped away.

After this scenario, Cage explained that this was only one possible story. Like it would in the actual game, the next scenario would take this information and continue to tell the story based on what had been done. Considering that this demo wasn't following the actual storyline of Heavy Rain, we were brought back to the scene in which the taxidermist returned to his house, but this time what followed was completely different. The taxidermist heard Madison upstairs and came looking for her. We were told that there are as many as 20 to 30 hiding places in the house. As Madison hid behind a door, a sequence of buttons appeared that needed to be held to simulate the same uncomfortable feeling of being stuck. She moved to another hiding spot, at which point she came face to face with the creep. He attacked, and Madison fought back with an object that she grabbed off of the nightstand. She ran downstairs and tripped, subsequently heading to the front door to find it locked. Then she ran to the kitchen window, which wouldn't open anymore. She finally made her way to the garage, flipped the switch, and ran to her bike with the murderer close behind. She frantically tried to start her motorcycle, and when it finally did, she took off and left her helmet behind.

This was a much more intense, action-filled scenario, the kind in which you feel like you're in serious danger, but these were only two of the possible scenarios that a player could have gone through. We were told that the player controlling Madison had messed up numerous times but still managed to escape. You could have killed the villain in various ways; you could have stayed hidden and called the police. Madison could also be killed, and the fascinating part is that the game would not be over. Events would merely continue with that information taken into account. Cage was tight-lipped about any further details as to how this would work or how things would continue, but we do know that there is no game over in Heavy Rain.

主人公死亡遊戲依舊進行 《暴雨》新情報透露

《暴雨》是索尼SCE全球研發工作室與曾開發《幻象殺手》等作品的Quantic Dream公司聯手打造的一款AVG遊戲,在2006年E3遊戲展上曾以一段完美表現角色面部表情和身體動作的精緻動畫給觀眾留下了深刻印象,遊戲將於2009年內發售。

日前,Quantic Dream公司的總裁David Cage在接受媒體採訪時透露了遊戲的若干信息,其中令人矚目的是遊戲過程中即便是主人公(一位深入調查失蹤事件的女記者)死亡遊戲也不會Game Over,而是會繼續進行下去。

David Cage表示:「對於故事和角色等將會起到怎樣的作用我目前無法透露太多,但關於角色我能對你說的是……遊戲中主要角色有死亡的可能,之後故事將會繼續發展下去。玩家可以在沒有這位角色的情況下繼續遊戲……」。

雖然還無法確定詳細細節,但是「主人公死後遊戲會繼續進行」的設定又為這款備受矚目的作品增加了一絲神秘色彩……

Here's the public presentation of Heavy Rain for the PlayStation 3 made by its Producer at Micromania Games Show 2008 in Paris.

- In this demo, the player takes the role of a young journalist who is investigating on several girls' disappearances, she goes to a house of a former taxi driver who is suspected of killing these women. In this presentation, the Producer of the game shows 2 different ways to finish this demo, there are lots of different ways to get through the story.

- Multiple view camera system, not always behind the girl.

- The demo is fully playable, no cut-scenes, the player can control the girl at any time.

- The Sixaxis motion sensor is used in the game to make different moves (open a window, raise or hit on an object, etc.).

- It is possible to hear what is happening in the mind of the character, so the player knows the different choices that are available.

- No loadings in the game!

- Backgrounds are fully interactive (all objects can be used, all doors can be opened, etc.).

- Very interesting Split Screen System to keep an eye on the murderer, control the character at the same time.

- The player has to maintain several buttons to stay hidden, uncomfortable situation for the player to reproduce the same stress in the game.

- Quick time events for some action scenes.

The presentation is in French, last 30 minutes.

系統感覺就係Indgo Prophecy2.....
畫面的確好強大,人物皮膚、光源效果驚為天人,不過唔及貼圖、噴血咁容易吸引眼球呢(雖然屋內貼圖並非常強)
另外呀制作人可唔可以靜靜地比人睇呀

解迷game多數都係性格男/女做主角的,太重粉入唔到戲 xd
另外女主角表情唔豐滿,皮笑肉不笑。相比之殺手叔叔d表情幾到肉
