Octodad: Dadliest Catch

Octodad: Dadliest Catch heading to PS4

by Richard Mitchell (7 minutes ago)

Octodad: Dadliest Catch
, a game about an octopus posing as a human father – yeah, it's weird – is coming to PlayStation 4. The news was delivered during Sony's E3 press briefing by Adam Boyes, Sony's VP of third-party relations. The game comes as part of a big indie push from Sony, which includes the ability for independent developers to self-publish on PlayStation 4.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch will make its "exclusive console debut" on PS4, alongside several other independent games.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch interview. From uni to PS4: how a student project became Shuhei Yosida’s lunch

Leon Hurley at 02:44pm August 9 2013

He’s got the best theme tune, Shuhei Yoshida wants to eat him and everyone else loves him. I chat to Phil Tibitoski, the president of Young Horses, about Octodad: The Dadliest Catch, cephalopod-based gaming and working with Sony on PS4.
Octodad: The Dadliest Catch interview

In a suitably oddball vibe that matches the game perfectly this interview saw me Skyping Phil on the kerb outside his office after he’d forgotten his keys. There’ll be more from Young Horses and PS4s indie game front later.
So how did how Octodad originally come about?
Phil Tibitoski: Octodad Deadliest Catch is a sequel to our first game that was just called Octodad. That one was entirely free and still is on PC and Mac. It was originally a student project we did back at university in Chicago. The first game had a team of 18 people and the point of the project was to come up with something we could enter at the Independent Games Festival at the Game Developers Conference. We wanted to just do something really weird and different, and we kind of had these rules in place like we couldn’t do a platformer or anything with gun, and just kind of see what we come up with.
“We had these rules in place, like
we couldn’t do a platformer
or anything with gun”

After doing a bunch of prototyping and pitching we came up with Octodad. We entered that into IGF and we were in the student finalists’ showcase. We started getting some press – other people thought this was pretty cool too, even though we weren’t sure how people might react. And then around GDC 2011 we decided to form a company, which is now Young Horses in order to better position ourselves to work on a sequel, since we wanted to do something that was bigger and better. The second game – this one, is more like what we originally had envisaged.
How has the new game changed in any way from the original ?
PT: A lot of it is an update as far as the graphics and physics and things like that. We spent a lot of time going over what we couldn’t do in the first game – you’re pretty much stuck in his house, and that was split up into levels. In this game you can explore a lot bigger environments and you leave his house and you’re kind of out in the open, the public aren’t as used to dealing with your antics as your family is. And so it’s stealthier and we’re trying to take advantage of the suspicion mechanics. You don’t want to be noticed by people as being weird or out of place. If you do too much they eventually find out what you are and you don’t want that to happen because you love your family so much that you want to be with them.
How do the controls work?
PT: The game is still spilt into two modes, a walking mode and a hand mode. In walking you use the sticks and the triggers – L2 and R2 – so if you hold L2 his left foot will raise up into the air. And then you move the left stick to move his left foot forwards or backwards or left or right. And you let go of the trigger to drop it. Similar thing for the right leg and you switch back and forward and get into a rhythm in order to walk around. L1 will switch you back and forward between legs mode and your arms. You control the right arm almost 1 to 1 and use the left stick to move on the horizontal plain. And then the right stick to move his arm up and down. And so you use a combination of those things to pick up things, open doors and stuff like that. You can target things by being within proximity to them and if you hit R1 his arm will fly towards it and grab it. And then the sticks to your suction cups.
Were you tempted to try any of the touchpad controls on PS4?
PT: Not yet, but we’d like to. We just haven’t had a chance quite yet. We ported the game in about a month so a lot of it was in time for E3, so a lot of it was just getting it ready and working in stable for people to play.
How easy has it been to port?
PT: We were pretty surprised with how easy it was to port and just use in general. Because none of us have any console development experience in the past, at least not anything significant. And so going into this we weren’t really sure how it would work out. We just had them send us a kit, tried it out, one of our programmers was the lead person on the port, he wasn’t even working full time, just part time on the port for three or four weeks and he got it up and running, and it’s stable. It never crashed at E3 or anything which is pretty amazing. So it was a lot easier than we thought it’d be.
How did that first contact with Sony come about?
PT: Back at GDC in 2011 when we were just starting up the first game, they invited us to their mixer. So we went there with some of the other student games and John, who’s one of our designers, was a producer at the time and he met with Nick Suttner, our account manager and talked about PSN and PS3. So we met with him and it was just kind of casual talk.
“We were just a bunch of students a few years ago, and all of a sudden we started our first company and now we’re on stage at E3″

And throughout the years he’s just checked in with things like PAX, and just asked how the game was going. We bounced ideas around about when we’d be ready to try something, and then PAX East 2013, they were like ‘we have PS4 dev kits; are you guys in a position where you could maybe try porting? Would you be interested in being on PS4?’ And of course, we were like; yes! So that was a nice motivator to kind of get that going as quickly as possible. When we were getting closer to the actual show they were like ‘oh by the way we’re doing this independent showcase about games on stage, would you be interested in being part of that?’ And we were like hell yeah, sure, why not!? Which was a little crazy seeing as we were just a bunch of students a few years ago, and all of a sudden we started our first company and now we’re on stage at E3. But it was really awesome.
How long was it from graduation to being on the stage at E3?
PT: Some of us graduated 2 years ago, I graduated only 1 year ago, so not very long.
Are you still having ‘what the hell happened there’ kind of moments?
PT: I don’t think any of us have had a lot of time to really process what’s happened. And I don’t know if we will until the game’s actually out. So it’s been kind of surreal.
Shuhei Yoshida tweeting about your game – does that blow your mind?
That’s been pretty amazing, I mean between him tipping the game to every body, saying how much he loves it, saying how he wants to eat Octodad with lemon is really funny. It’s amazing to see that even people at the very top of their organisation really care about games as small as ours. One of the account managers I was talking to and said they’d shown the game to Jack Tretton, which is crazy. Mark Cerny mentioned it in his develop keynote the other week which was wild. So, it’s great.

Has anything stood out as being particularly interesting, technology-wise?
PT: I like the idea of the light bar on the controller, we hope to use that with the camera. It’ll be hopefully more widespread than the Move will be, though we hope to support that as well.
Is that something you’re planning for Octodad?
PT: Yeah, we’re looking to do some sort of motion visuals with Octodad. We haven’t tried it just yet, I mean we did a PC connect tech demo sort of thing a long time ago, and people seemed to really think it was fun. So we’d like to kind of explore that area more, and the increased memory with the system is really nice, we don’t have to be as conservative and worry about that stuff so much. We’re in a position where we can just bring it over and we didn’t have to do so much optimisation and the game still runs really really well at 1080p.
