Shuhei Yoshida Gives a Quick Last Guardian Update

After more than six years in development, the recent news of director Fumito Ueda finishing work on the game as a contractor instead of an employee, and the lack of any substantial public updates in almost three years, it's hard not to worry a little about The Last Guardian. I don't want to, and it's still near the top of my most anticipated games list (I put it at #2 for the year), but to a certain degree it's unavoidable.
So when I spoke with Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida at the DICE conference in Las Vegas yesterday, I asked him for an update on the situation.
1UP: Can you give us any update on The Last Guardian? Have you seen it recently?
SY: Oh yeah, yeah. I've been seeing it.
1UP: Is it still healthy and good?
SY: Well you know, there was a rumor that Fumito Ueda left the company or something like that.
1UP: That was confirmed, right?
SY: Well it's confirmed in terms of the status of his relation to the company -- he was an employee, and now he's working on a contract basis. You know, we discussed an arrangement so he could focus on the creative side. But his work and his presence on that team never changed, so it was just more a contractual rearrangement, and that was taken [by many] as "he left."
1UP: Does he still work in the office?
SY: Absolutely. Absolutely. He comes in every day, and he's probably one of the people who works the longest hours. The project has been making progress, but slow progress. So that's tough, but we haven't changed any focus. It's still a really important project and a vision we want to see realized, and Fumito's vision is really causing a very difficult challenge for the developers, so there's some scrapping and rebuilding -- iteration in the process. That's why [it's taking so long].
1UP: So back to your earlier comment, did he become a contractor so he could work on the creative side rather than the business side?
SY: It's a personal matter, so I can't really say.
1UP: Do you think he'll continue to work with Sony after The Last Guardian is finished?
SY: If this project goes well -- you know, fingers crossed -- we've worked with him for a long time so yeah I certainly hope we can maintain a relationship.

SY:もちろんです。毎日も来ますよ、そしてたぶん毎日一番働いた人かもしれない。プロジェクトはスローベースで進んでいる。上田さんの理念はとても難しいですね、だから開発も簡単ではない。何度もやり直したことも。
1UP:上田さんは”契約社員”に変わったことは、創作方面に集中したいですね?
SY:彼の個人的な意思なので、わたしでは何も言えません。

At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it’s making progress, but still not to the level — it’s playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch.

Wired: I’ve heard that people from Sony Santa Monica have gone to Japan to work in tandem, collaborate with the Japan team on this game.

Yoshida: Did you read it on the internet?

Wired: I did not read it on the internet, no; I’ve heard from more reliable sources than the internet.

Yoshida: Well, you know, it’s not just Santa Monica. We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the U.S. and the U.K. so we are giving them whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the U.S. and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice.

Over the past several months, Sony's much-anticipated The Last Guardian has been through a number of delays, staff changes, and publicity mishaps. Now, the company says that a number of other Sony studios are working to get the project out the door.

In a recent interview with Wired, Sony game design chief Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that God of War studio Sony Santa Monica and a number of other Western developers are offering their technical expertise to aid the Japanese development team.

"Well, you know, it's not just Santa Monica. We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the U.S. and the UK so we are giving them whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the U.S. and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice," Yoshida said.

He said that to realize the team's vision, Sony has to overcome some challenging technical hurdles, and the company is doing what it can to straighten out these issues. As a result of these development challenges, Yoshida said that Sony can't provide a solid launch window.

"At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it's making progress, but still not to the level -- it's playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch," he said.

Late last year, The Last Guardian saw some additional development shakeups, as producer Yoshifusa Hayama left Sony to join social gaming company Bossa Studios, and project lead Fumito Ueda transitioned into a contracting role as he stepped down from his position as a full time company employee.

Soon after these staff changes, GameStop inaccurately reported that the game had been cancelled and dropped all existing pre-orders, causing some confusion over the game's future. Sony later confirmed that development was still very much on track.

The Last Guardian, which is considered a spiritual successor to the renowned Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, was first announced at E3 2009, and has seen a number of delays since that initial debut.

For many PlayStation gamers, The Last Guardian has become a lasting symbol of Team ICO’s continued inability to bring a game to market in the lifecycle of the PlayStation 3. While the game was first unveiled back in early 2008, The Last Guardian was undoubtedly in development for a time before that, sometime after Team ICO’s last game – Shadow of the Colossus – launched on PlayStation 2 in 2005. The time between the two projects is nearing the seven year mark.
As such, we’ve written a great deal about The Last Guardian’s trials and tribulations. We noted its conspicuous absence at E3, the most recent news on the heels of word that the game was making progress way back in February. Of course, trouble originally began to brew even earlier than that when it was revealed that the game’s executive producer left Sony, not to mention Team ICO’s visionary Fumito Ueda, who also left Sony.

With its absence at E3, questions have continued to linger about what’s going on with The Last Guardian and if it’s even still in development. But the most recent issue of Game Informer (Issue 232, Page 23) has an interview with Sony Worldwide Studio President Shuhei Yoshida, in which he attempts to put to rest fears about the game.
“There are some technical issues being addressed,” Yoshida told Game Informer. “There’s not much to show what it looks like. At this period of time we are unable to give an update, but the game is still in development.”
When gamers can expect to actually see The Last Guardian again – nonetheless actually play it – remains to be seen. But it’s good to know that the game is still in development, even if the PlayStation community’s patience with the project has grown especially thin over the last year.

What's happening with The Last Guardian, the eye-catching PlayStation 3 exclusive once due out late 2011?
We asked Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida that same question during an interview at Gamescom today.
"The team is still working on it very hard," he replied. "There are certain technical issues they've been working on. That's the period of time when the game, looking from the outside, doesn't seem to be making much progress. But internally there is a lot of work going into creating the title."
The Last Guardian failed to show up during Sony's Gamescom press conference yesterday. That absence, following similar no-shows at Tokyo Game Show 2011 and E3 in June and the news that superstar developer Fumito Ueda is working on the game as a contractor, has only served to increase the concern around the game's status.
So what's taking so long? According to Yoshida, Sony Japan Studio has had to completely re-do work that had got the game to a playable state.
"We had the game playable," Yoshida explained. "At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done."
Some have suggested the game has been switched from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4, which is reportedly due out late next year.
But Yoshida insisted The Last Guardian remains a PS3 title. "The game is developed on PS3," he said.
