Xbox Tenchu: Return From Darkness details
Activision releases new information on its upcoming ninja action adventure game for the Xbox.

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/...s_6085176.html

Activision has today released new information on Tenchu: Return From Darkness, which was announced for the Xbox in July. The game is based on the PlayStation 2 title Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven, but it will feature a number of Xbox-exclusive enhancements, including additional levels, Xbox Live support, and new restart and continue functions.

The two new single-player maps in Tenchu: Return From Darkness will take place in a samurai mansion and at a deserted pagoda. The single-player game will boast enemies with superior intelligence to those in the PS2 game and will also feature new restart and continue options that allow players to either continue when they die or restart a mission retaining any items they collected on their previous attempt.

Six of the game's levels will be available for multiplayer use, both in cooperative missions for two and in deathmatches for a currently unspecified number of players. We'll bring you more information on Tenchu: Return From Darkness, which is currently scheduled for release in March 2004, as soon as it becomes available.

The Tenchu series has always stood apart from other games starring ninjas because of its much more realistic approach to presenting the fast-paced ninja lifestyle. The last entry in the series, Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven for the PlayStation 2, was released early last year and continued the story from the first Tenchu. The game was set one year after the events in the first Tenchu and let you play as Rikimaru, Ayame, or a doctor named Tesshu. A little over a year after the game's appearance on the PlayStation 2, Activision and developer K2 are working to bring a similar experience to the Xbox with Tenchu: Return From Darkness, a director's-cut version of Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven that has been significantly enhanced. The game will have an updated single-player mode with new cutscenes and gameplay mechanics, while the multiplayer game has been overhauled to accommodate Xbox Live support. There will also be new levels and bosses, one of which is Mifuyu (which means "Three Winters" in Japanese ). She is the 20-year-old daughter of the samurai Tadokoro. She was trained by her father in the art of swordfighting and holds a high code of honor. She is the boss character for the new samurai mansion in the Rikimaru and Ayame storylines. We had the chance to talk to Masanori Kuwasashi, the main game designer at K2, to find out what to expect from the franchise's Xbox debut.
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/...w_6086850.html

GameSpot: How long has the game been in development?

Masanori Kuwasashi: The game has been in development for roughly 10 months--three to four months for designing new stages and the rest of the time for incorporating Xbox Live and porting over the rest of the game.

GS: Who is working on it?

MK: All design and direction is being handled by the same K2 staff that created Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven. All programming is being done by Prosoft.

GS: How do you think the PlayStation 2 game turned out?

MK: The PS2 version was great. In fact, it is going Greatest Hits, but, like all games, there were features that needed to be improved. To be more specific, in hindsight we would have liked to spend more time tweaking the gameplay balance and creating a few more cutscenes. We've definitely taken this opportunity to focus on those areas for Tenchu: Return From Darkness.

GS: How did public reaction to the PS2 game influence the Xbox game's development?

MK: We've read almost every review out there, and though we were pleased with the amount of positive comments, there of course were some negative ones as well. We've done the best we could to address them. One example is the inclusion of the ability to drag and hide dead bodies. We've also added a restart function and a continue function.

GS: How did you approach the Xbox version of the game?

MK: We approached the Xbox project as if it were our second chance to make the game even better. We've raised the polygon count of the characters and added specular lighting. We've also created more cutscenes to better tell the story and added new functions for user-friendliness. To keep the game fresh for Wrath of Heaven owners, we added new levels, tools, and unlockable abilities, retuned the enemy AI, and changed the enemy and item placements throughout the game.

GS: What has been the biggest challenge in bringing the game to the Xbox?

MK: The biggest challenge for this project is definitely Xbox Live. Currently there aren't that many action games that let you play on Xbox Live, so it was a pretty ambitious commitment to make, but the programmers at Prosoft had the experience and skills to make it happen. The result: You can now play online with another ninja in co-op missions or go head-to-head with 20 playable characters. It's simply amazing.

GS: What additions are you making to the game? Why?

MK: We have added two new stages in the story mode and new enemy characters and items for those two new stages. Gamers expect such additions, and we didn't want to let anyone down. We've also added Xbox Live functionality. This is something I think people wished for but didn't think would really happen. We as game designers always look for ways to make use of the hardware's capabilities, and Xbox Live was definitely something we wanted to do.

GS: How challenging has it been to incorporate Xbox Live functionality?

MK: From a gameplay sense it was not difficult. We already had a two-player co-op mode in the PS2 version, and we simply wanted to make it playable online. Easier said than done, though, because, as previously mentioned, the technical side is where things got challenging.

GS: How are the graphics being upgraded for the Xbox?

MK: We're using higher-polygon character models for the Xbox version, and we've added specular lighting to the characters to raise the realism up a notch.

GS: Where do you see the Tenchu franchise going from here?

MK: The Tenchu franchise will continue to deliver awesome, authentic ninja games.

GS: Thanks for your time.

Tenchu: Return From Darkness Hands-On Impressions And Movies
http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Sto...1804.11616.htm

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; ninjas are cool. Fads may come and go, but ninjas will be forever cool, it’s just an undeniable fact of life. Naturally, being as cool as they are, ninjas have been the focus of countless video games. After all, they’re a perfect combination of stealth and action, strength and grace. Being able to sneak through the shadows and then unleash a barrage of powerful katana attacks on some unsuspecting thug makes good video game fodder. Today I got a chance to sit down with Activision’s Tenchu: Return From Darkness, an updated version of their previous PS2 only game Tenchu: Wrath Of Heaven. Part director’s cut and part overhaul, the game immediately piqued my interest, what with my obsession with ninjas and all.

Return From Darkness is a sort of director’s cut of Wrath Of Heaven. Much of the core gameplay from WOH is unchanged. You still start off with the choice of playing as either general badass Rikimaru or the seductive and deadly Ayame. After selecting a character you’re then thrust into a mission that has you sneaking around and laying waste to your opposition. Missions are straight forward and at the beginning of each one you’ll receive your main objective as well as some helpful hints on how to beat the level or basically keep yourself alive. Missions also still come with varying layouts, meaning that once you’ve beaten a level for one layout, you can choose another and have enemy placements be different, adding more challenge and strategy to how you play the game.

Combat is also the same as it was in WOH and you’ll have the opportunity to play through the game in two main fashions: stealth or action. Stealth is the bread and butter of Return From Darkness, and as such, stealth kills once again play an important role in the game. For those unfamiliar with the series, stealth kills are attacks that you can pull off granted that an enemy hasn’t seen you or detected your presence. By hiding in the shadows or by sneaking around and peeking around corners, you can generally get the jump on an unsuspecting enemy and pull off a stealth kill, which comes complete with gory and violent kill animations. For those less inclined to sneak around for the entire game, you can take on enemies head to head, but keep in mind that fighting is usually not a very wise move. Unlike other games that have a heavy focus on combat, Tenchu is a series that has stuck to its guns of having a combat system that is fairly realistic. Enemies aren’t dumb and won’t just let you hack away at them. Instead, once they’ve seen you, they’ll whistle for their cronies to back them up and before you know it you’ll be surrounded with nowhere to go. Fighting also is more realistic than other titles and enemies will fight strategically and intelligently when you go at them. For gamers who get frustrated by enemies who continually block your attacks, you may want to go find another game, because this one may give you a seizure.

But, to make combat a bit more intuitive, the game does feature a number of moves that help to alleviate RFD from falling into the “attack, block, attack” formula of some games. Characters are able to utilize a number of front and back flips, as well as rolls to increase their chances in a fight. Going after an enemy with only attacks may prove to be pointless, but a careful mix of attacks and rolls help make fighting more enjoyable in the long run. And, these moves translate well to the stealth portions of the game as they provide you a means to sneak about in a more undetectable way. Rolls prove handy when trying to cross an open passageway that may have an enemy on the other end, while flips help to ensure quick escapes from close calls when you may stumble onto an enemy. Often times, you’ll get a very short window from the point an enemy sees you to the point where he comes after you, and being able to pull off a speedy escape is essential to staying alive.

Speaking of control, any gamers familiar with the Tenchu series will be happy to hear that RFD is pretty faithful to the system that was present in earlier games in the series. Since everything is mapped now to the Xbox controller, the controls are still pretty easy to pick up. Movement is mapped to the left analog stick. The left trigger is probably the button that you’ll be using the most often and using it has two distinct purposes. First of all, pressing it while in an open area will cause your character to crouch down towards the ground. While crouched, you move more slowly but also more silently. This move proves to be very valuable when you’re stalking an enemy or just trying to get around without being seen or heard. Pressing the left trigger while near a wall or tall object will cause you to press your body up against it. You’ll be doing quite a bit of this in the game as you’ll usually need to be peeking around corners or lying in wait for an unsuspecting enemy ninja to come wandering into your grasp. Attacking with your swords is mapped to the X button, while the B button is used for blocking.

Since any self-respecting ninja carries around a load of cool ninja toys, you’ll want to get in on the action, too. Before the beginning of each level you’ll have a certain number of items that you can carry. While you only start out with the most basic of items, like shurikens and health potions, throughout the game you’ll run across other various items that you can either use or stockpile for use in later levels. Items range from poisoned rice to temporary paralyze enemies, colored rice to mark your trail through a level, as well as more deadly trinkets like grenades and metal shards to throw on the ground to tie up pursuing enemies. All items are mapped to the Y button, but with a press of the Black button on the controller you can cycle through all your available items for use management. Also, you’ll still have your trust grappling hook that can be used to zip yourself up to high ground such as rooftops or different floors of a building you may be investigating.

Perhaps the most noticeable addition to Return From Darkness is its newly enhanced multiplayer modes. While Wrath Of Heaven did include multiplayer co-op and versus fighting, Return From Darkness takes these features to the next level with the inclusion of online play via Xbox Live. Gone are the days of having to play through a multiplayer co-op mission via split-screen. Through the wonders of the Internet you’ll be able to team up with another Xbox player and tackle a variety of missions that range from having to simply kill all the enemies in a level to more complex tasks like trying to do that same thing but without being seen once. The voice chat feature of Xbox Live proves to be a homerun, since being able to verbally communicate with your fellow teammate while playing through a level is extremely helpful. And, to make cooperation more of an incentive, the game features some truly brutal double stealth kills that have both of your characters taking it to some poor ninja that happened to get in your way.

Versus mode, at its core, is virtually unchanged from WOH, outside of the fact that you can now fight it out online. The game features 20 selectable characters, a majority of which you’ll need to unlock through regular play of the Story Mode. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the Xbox version of Versus mode features any new characters. But, with the new online components of Return From Darkness, Activision has planned a unique ranking system for keeping track of your win/loss records as well as your overall position compared to other players of the game. Instead of simply ranking players based on their wins and losses, the game will also take into consideration how well and how much you’ve played through the title’s Story Mode. So, to truly rank up there with the best of the best, you’ll need to hop off the ‘Net every now and then and actually take part in the game’s normal missions.

Return From Darkness features some nicely brushed up and enhanced graphics. Character models now have more polygons which help to give them a more realistic, less blocky appearance. While the graphics haven’t gotten a complete overhaul a la Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, the game does look quite a bit better running on the Xbox. Sound is pretty much the same in the game and borders on spot on or melodramatic cheese. The main characters voice acting is pretty good, but many of the secondary characters sound like they just go out of some dinner theater gig by the airport.

My only real grip with Return From Darkness is a problem that I’ve had with all the previous Tenchu games: the camera. While the camera has been tweaked a bit to be a little more user friendly for the game, its still woefully unreliable, especially during times when you really need it to be working correctly. This really becomes apparent when you’re either perched up on a rooftop trying to get a look at an enemy that may be below you or when you’re peeking around corners. The camera has a frustrating tendency to lock up on you or fail to pan to where you need it. Needless to say, this usually ends up resulting in you either getting spotted by an enemy or worse, which for a game that has just a heavy emphasis on stealth, is almost inexcusable. With a cleaned up camera, this game really has the potential to be something special. But with title after title releasing with the same camera problems, I’m starting to lose hope that it will ever be fixed.

As I mentioned before, ninjas are an interesting bunch. They either have what it takes to creep through the shadows and decimate their enemies, or they don’t and end up slipping on a banana peel while in “stealth mode.” Tenchu: Return From Darkness is much like this analogy. While it does offer up some new gameplay and the truly enjoyable Xbox Live functionality, it slips up when it comes to its still atrocious camera. But, behind the good and the bad is still a game that should prove to be enjoyable for those Xbox owners looking for a game that has stealth and action, without having the words “metal gear solid” or “splinter cell” in their name.

Closing Comments
If you’ve gathered a sense of mediocrity and deflation from this review, then you should know exactly how I feel about this game. The horrendous AI, okay graphics, and clunky camera and controls do nothing to excite me in any way. Yeah, the stealth kills are pretty cool, as is the story, but with enemies having an IQ of a raisin, the stealth kills aren’t very satisfying. You just don’t have to work for it in any way.
The online features added in the game don’t really make the game better in any way. Some people may appreciate them, and it is one more game to play co-op, but the modes are really nothing special.

Ninja Gaiden has better action, Splinter Cell has better stealth, but Tenchu offers a cool story told from multiple angles. If you’re a Tenchu fan, there’s definitely something here for you. The same can be said for those looking for a more traditional representation of the ninja. For everyone else, try renting before buying.

7.5 Presentation
It's a port with some new addtions, most notably online play. Nothing too fancy here.

7.5 Graphics
Decent models and textures and jerky animation offset by a smooth framerate and unique art direction.

8.0 Sound
Effective ambient sounds, and a fitting Eastern-themed soundtrack. Voice work could use just that - work.

6.5 Gameplay
Bad camera, bad AI, simplistic combat. Little risk vs. reward. Some cool levels and weapons, and a good story save this game.

8.0 Lasting Appeal
Three different playable characters that tell one story. Plus, there's online play.

7.0 OVERALL: (out of 10 / not an average)
7.2 Average Reader Score
