Prey 2 announced by Bethesda, releasing next year

Bethesda’s confirmd that Prey 2 is indeed a real thing, and is releasing next year on consoles and PC.

The game will come from Human Head Studios, the lot who made the first game what it was. It’ll be built using “the cutting edge id tech engine from id Software.” (not id Tech 5)

“We are thrilled to be working with Bethesda on Prey 2,” said project lead, Chris Rhinehart.
The first details on the game will appear from the May issue of PSM3. It appeared on the French cover of a gaming magazine over the weekend.
The first Prey launched back in 2006 for PC and 360 from 2K. The rights of the IP have now switched to Bethesda.

First Prey 2 info gets out, inspired by Mirror’s Edge

The first proper info on Prey 2 has gotten out from GameReactor magazine, confirming it’ll be a single-player only experience and that it’ll take various cues from other games, including Mirror’s Edge.

Prey 2 removes Tommy as the main character and lets you step into the shoes of Killian Samuels, a sheriff and a prison guard. You may have already seen him in the live-action trailer Bethesda released earlier this week.

The game kicks off with you playing the first level from the first Prey, but only with Killian, not Tommy.

Human Head mentions the game has been in development for three years, with Xbox 360 being the lead platform. It also confirms that 3D, Move and Kinect won’t be featured.

Multiplayer will also not make an appearance, but there will be DLC after release.

“Who would pick the MP mode of Prey 2 ahead of the one in for example Halo Reach? We’d rather to a really good SP adventure,” said the studio to the mag on MP.

Another bombshell is that it has an open game structure. Said the mag: “Go wherever you want, talk to whoever you want, do the missions you want.”

You can also use your surroundings to sneak up on enemies using the shadows.

The game’s producer said the sequel will take its inspirations from Mass Effect, Riddick and Blade Runner, with another key inspiration being DICE’s Mirror’s Edge. This will be shown in game with parkour moments in the game when you are being chased by enemies.

The magazine notes that Killian is “as flexible and limber as Faith of ME, leaping over hights, hanging by arms from pipes, balancing on thin boards and jumping like a cat upwards structures,” adding it has “the moving scheme from Mirror’s Edge, the freedom of Mass Effect and the fire fights of Killzone 2.”

Prey 2 is 'just not good enough,' Bethesda says

Publisher Bethesda is "unhappy" with Prey 2's current state, company vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines said during an interview with IGN during E3.

"We appreciate that folks are displeased that we haven't had any update or any info on Prey 2, but whatever your displeasure is, you can't even be remotely as unhappy about it as us," Hines said. "We spent years and millions of dollars and a ton of effort trying to help [developer] Human Head make a great Prey 2 game. What we said the last time we said anything was that it's not up to our quality standards."

Human Head is rumored to have encountered numerous setbacks during Prey 2's development. Anonymous sources claimed that development stalled in late 2011, and rumors from last month indicated that Dishonored developer Arkane Austin might be taking over the troubled project.

Hines' frank comments during IGN's interview suggest that Prey 2 is either on the verge of cancellation or a major shift in development. "You don't just keep throwing money at something or going down a path that you're not happy about," Hines explained. "You have to make tough choices. Again, when we have more info on it, we'll be happy to talk about it. That's what I can say for now."
