Tottenham are continuing to scout South America for new talent. It is believed that Spurs have sent scouts out to Brazil over the past month to watch Claudinho perform in three league matches.

Reports back to White Hart Lane are thought to have been positive, but Tottenham are likely to face competition if they decide to step up their interest.

Claudinho, who has been likened to fellow centre-back Lucio, is known for being good in the air and also having an eye for goal.

Cruzeiro had not previously been prepared to negotiate a sale, but club bosses are set to meet soon to discuss their transfer strategy for January.

Italian sides Udinese and Fiorentina are also understood to be tracking the 21-year-old, who is under contract at Cruzeiro until December 2013 and valued at £6.9m.

Tottenham have held initial talks with Ajax over a £10 million move for Jan Vertonghen after making him their top defensive target for the January transfer window, Goal.com understands.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is keen to bolster his defensive options and is looking for an upgrade on Sebastien Bassong, who is likely to be sold in the next transfer window.

Tottenham have been strongly linked with a fresh bid for Bolton defender Gary Cahill but Vertonghen has emerged as their leading target. The club have made their interest known to Ajax and believe the Amsterdam club would be willing to sell the 24 year old in the New Year.

Vertonghen, who has been closely tracked by Arsenal, is under contract at Ajax until 2013 and is widely expected to leave the Amsterdam Arena either in January or next summer.

The Belgian international's departure from Ajax became more likely after Frank de Boer's side were eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday night. Vertonghen has previously insisted he does not want to leave Ajax halfway through the season, but sources have told Goal.com that all parties are receptive to a January deal.

The sale of Luis Suarez to Liverpool last season showed that Ajax are willing to sell players in the January window while De Boer has already spoken of his interest in replacing Vertonghen with Inter defender Cristian Chivu.

Spurs have turned to Vertonghen as Cahill looks increasingly likely to sign for Chelsea, while other targets such as Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels are considered too expensive and unattainable in January.

Redknapp has been worried by key injuries to Tottenham defenders and wants Vertonghen to add to Ledley King, Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson and William Gallas as his central defensive options. The player's age, transfer fee and wages fit into the profile the Londoners look for in potential signings.

Vertonghen has progressed rapidly since breaking into the Ajax team in 2006 and was made captain earlier this year. Spurs scouts have reported his reading of the game and ability on the ball as key areas of his game.

Tottenham will only make a solid move for Vertonghen once more is known about the future of Bassong.

The Cameroon international cost £8m when he signed from Newcastle in 2009 but has found himself out of favour at White Hart Lane. He nearly joined QPR on the last day of the summer transfer window and the west London club are expected to renew their interest in January.

Sky Sports Is Terrible At Fact Checking: When Brazilian Wonderkid Transfer Rumors Go Wrong

This is Wellington Paulista. He plays for Cruzeiro Esporte Club. This is a different club than Esporte Club Cruzeiro.

Despite my insistence that he is wrong, my co-writer Brian Mechanick has told me on numerous occasions that Sky Sports is more reliable than publications such as the Daily Mail, Sun and Mirror. While the transfer rumors from those publications regularly get made fun of by myself and others, Sky is thought of as a slightly higher standard. Why, I have no idea.

This morning, while looking through my RSS feeder, I found a transfer rumor at Sky Sports. This rumor stated that Tottenham had sent scouts to watch Claudinho, a 21-year-old central defender who plays for Cruzeiro. Sky said that he has been compared to Lucio and that Tottenham has sent scouts to watch him. They said that his club valued him at £7 million.

I thought that this was very curious, considering that I had never heard of Claudinho. I follow the Brasileirao and continental competitions in South America, so I figured that I would have at least heard his name mentioned before if he was such a quality player. Still, I am not such an expert on Brazilian football that I know of every quality player, even the ones playing for big teams. It was possible that this one slipped through the cracks.

Turns out, he didn't. There is no 21-year-old central defender named Claudinho who plays for Cruzeiro ES, the Brazilian first division side. There is, however, a 21-year-old central defender named Claudinho who plays for a Club called Cruziero. He plays for ES Cruzeiro, which is not the same thing as Cruzeiro ES. ES Cruzeiro plays in the fourth division of Brazilian football.

Star-divide

ES Cruzeiro currently have one win and five points from eight games in the Campeonatio Brasileiro Serie D, according to wikipedia. I know that's not a terribly reliable source of information, but I can't be arsed to look it up elsewhere because it's really not that important. What's important is that the rumor Sky Sports published is almost certainly false.

I am not, however, accusing Sky Sports of lying. It is quite possible that they got terrible information from someone they thought was reliable. However, they did print an article without checking to see if the player in question even PLAYED for the team in question. Somewhere, at some point down the chain, SOMEONE lied. The editor who posted this article did not make sure that the facts were checked.

Tottenham are almost certainly not scouting this player. If they were scouting this player, it would be highly unlikely that his club would demand £7 million, seeing as there is zero chance that the entire club is worth that much money.

I am not a professional journalist and I am not an expert on Brazilian football. I saw the article, said "that doesn't sound right," and did a bit of googling. It took me less than five minutes to discover that there is no Claudinho on Cruzeiro ES and that there is a 21-year-old defender named Claudinho on ES Cruzeiro, a fourth division club. Five. Whole. Minutes.

Harry Redknapp has a few injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s trip to Stoke.

The manager reports that striker Jermain Defoe has a slight hamstring problem, defender Ledley King is trying to recover from the knee injury sustained in training last Friday and Gareth Bale picked up a slight knock against Bolton last weekend.

“We’ve one or two knocks,” said Harry. “Jermain has had a bit of a hamstring this week, Ledley took a bang on the knee in training last week and Gareth has had a problem this week. We’ll wait and see how they are.”

Better news sees Niko Kranjcar ready to return to full training after a thigh injury sustained on international duty with Croatia in October.

Harry also reports that Michael Dawson is ‘coming back slowly but surely’ from his Achilles injury. Tom Huddlestone also remains out.
