The minds behind the game answer questions and delve into Darth Vader as a daddy.

July 27, 2007 - Crafting the next chapter in a franchise as deep and beloved as Star Wars isn't easy but neither is running a presentation at San Diego Comic-Con.

"Can we dim the lights a little bit?" said Matt Shell, marketing manager for LucasArts as he prepared to introduce the game's trailer.

Suddenly, the lights got brighter.

"Actually, the complete opposite of that would be great," Shell said.

After the lighting snafu, Windows Media Player bricked and had to be restarted, but eventually Shell and Haden Blackman, the project lead on Force Unleashed, got the popular dude-crashes-a-Star-Destroyer trailer up and running. When it was over, the nearly 330 fans and costumed crazies burst into applause.

"I guess that looks okay," Shell said with a grin.

In case you're just joining us, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed puts a lightsaber in your hand and unleashes you on an unsuspecting galaxy as Darth Vader's "secret apprentice." The tale takes place in the years between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Beyond that, not much was known about this title -- until today.

Force Unleashed will take place during a 17 to 18-year span and seems intent on creating a rich storyline for the main character as he comes of age under the wicked wing of one Anakin Skywalker.

"He's Vader," Blackman told the crowd. "He's like the worst father figure imaginable."

Obviously, Darth's had a pretty rough life, and he's not going to go easy on the new guy -- expect physical and emotional torment. Blackman said that when the young apprentice gets hurt in battle, pseudo-daddy Vader's not going to kiss the boo-boos. When the apprentice fails, Vader's sure to punish him, but chances are he'll let the impending pain hang over the kid for a week or so before dealing out the whippin'. The apprentice says he's committed, but leave it to Darth to introduce a good-looking Imperial pilot named Juno Eclipse and watch how the option for love weighs on his apprentice's mind.

In general, expect Darth Vader to be a jerk to his right-hand man.

As the presentation continued, the LucasArts folks answered questions about the Force Unleashed team (there's about 20 of them) and what the Force is going to be (Blackman described it as "amped up, out of control, over the top" but said the extreme instances of its use will be explained in the story). While the audience asked questions, character art, action depictions and environments were displayed on a big screen, and Blackman even let on that the game was almost a Wookie superhero title.

"We wanted to tell a different type of story," he said.

In August 2004, Blackman and the team began kicking around what type of new game they could do. Throughout the next 18 months the team worked closely with George Lucas in an attempt to figure out where to go next -- even the possibility of a smuggler's game or the aforementioned Wookie action title.

In the end -- and after some focus groups -- the team decided giving players a lightsaber and unprecedented access to the Force was the way to go.

As the trailer shows -- the apprentice is seen hurling Stormtroopers, slicing into foes with his lightsaber and taking out entire rooms with one move -- this game is going to have a heavy focus on action, but a fan in the audience had a pretty popular question -- if this new guy's bad enough to be Vader's boy toy, why is he attacking the Empire in the trailer and screenshots.

"That's a great question," Blackman said.

Electrified distance.The answer: you're a "secret" apprentice. Darth Vader can't have you running around announcing that you're a Sith student. In fact, some missions will demand that you leave no witnesses. So, even if you're just going in to kill one Jedi, you might have to extinguish anybody unfortunate enough to be standing around when the stuff goes bad.

But that can't be the only reason, right?

"Where he starts out is not necessarily where he's going to end up," Blackman said.

What other questions did the rabid mass of Star Wars fans have …

Are Obi-Wan and Yoda going to make an appearance in Force Unleashed?
"I can tell you that you can expect to see some very familiar faces," Blackman said.

Is there going to be a Grim Fandango sequel?
"You never know," Shell said amid laughter.

What locations will be in the game?
Although the battle to appease your master will take you all over the galaxy, LucasArts wasn't ready to give us the keys to the kingdom today. What we do know is that you'll be stopping in at a Tie Fighter construction facility, the fungus planet Felucia, the junkyard star of Raxus Prime and Kashyyyk.

Can you customize your character?
The general answer was a no comment, but Blackwell added "But we love customization at LucasArts."

Will there be a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic III?
There's nothing official to report.

Are we going to see another installment of the X-Wing franchise?
No comment.

Will Darth Vader be playable in Force Unleashed?
"Uh," Blackman said. "Stay tuned, I guess."

Is it weird to be adding to the canon of the franchise you love?
"It's about the coolest thing I can imagine," Blackman said.

LucasArts announced Tuesday that its next-generation action adventure, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, will be arriving on the Nintendo Wii platform, in addition to its already revealed PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

Ever since the Wii's unusual motion-sensing controllers were unveiled, gamers and Star Wars fans around the globe have been anticipating using the Wii-mote to control a lightsaber. Their wish will be fulfilled next year when the game is scheduled to release.

LucasArts also mentioned the Nunchuk controller will allow players to enact their character's Force powers.

The Wii version of the game will feature an exclusive Duel Mode that pits players in head-to-head battles for the title of ultimate Jedi master.

The Force Unleashed implements new technologies that will be debuted in the game: Digital Molecular Matter by Pixelux and Euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. Set in the span of time between Episode III and IV, the player will take on the role of Darth Vader's apprentice.

Sept. 18, 2007 - LucasArts today revealed that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will come to the Wii home videogame system from Nintendo next spring, offering owners the unique chance to live out their Jedi fantasies by wielding the Wii Remote as a lightsaber while using the Nunchuk controller to torment foes with their Force powers.


The Force Unleashed casts players as Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice and promises to unveil new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The game’s expansive story is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.

The Wii version, in development by Krome Studios, will also add an exclusive duel mode in which players can compete head-to-head with their friends to determine the ultimate Jedi Master.

“The Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console’s motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life,” said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts. “We’ve worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force.”
