[STATEMENT] Canada is concerned by the Hong Kong Government’s decision not to renew the work visa of the Financial Times’ Asia news editor Victor Mallet. Without a clear rationale from the Hong Kong Government, this decision creates troubling uncertainty over the state of press freedom and freedom of speech in Hong Kong.

The media play an essential role in promoting government transparency and accountability. Government interference with the media undermines the right of freedom of speech, of the press and of publication as enshrined in Hong Kong’s Basic Law.
