Lazio's future looks brighter after coach Roberto Mancini and
his players invested in the debt-ridden club.
The Roman outfit has struggled in the past two years to remain
afloat but have now found in their own players the financial support
which will help increase their capital.
Coach Mancini, together with 17 players including former
Biancocelesti stars Alessandro Nesta, Giuseppe Favalli and Dejan Stankovic,
have either bought Lazio shares or agreed to waive their bonus payments.
Twelve Biancocelesti players -
Fabrizio Casazza, Stefano Fiore,
Giuliano Giannichedda, Guerino Gottardi, Simone Inzaghi,
Fabio Liverani, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Roberto Muzzi,
Angelo Peruzzi, Matteo Sereni, Luciano Zauri and Cesar -have followed
Mancini and former team-mates Stankovic, Favalli and
Nesta in buying club shares worth a total of 4.4m euros (AUS7.7million).
Moreover, 10 players - Demetrio Albertini, Bernardo Corradi,
Giuseppe Favalli, Stefano Fiore, Giuliano Giannichedda, Guerino Gottardi,
Simone Inzaghi, Fabio Liverani, Sinisa Mihajlovic and Angelo Peruzzi -
have deferred their bonus payments for the 2003-2004 season which
will save the club a further 2.3m euros (AUS$2.4million).
In a statement on the club's official website, Lazio president
Ugo Longo thanked the support offered by his players and
the managerial staff.
"Lazio president Ugo Longo would like to thank the players and
the technical team for their contribution to Lazio's improvement
and their great gesture of trust," the statement.
Despite their financial woes, Lazio recently won the
Coppa Italia trophy and earned a UEFA Cup spot for next season
after finishing sixth in Serie A.
