Wed 15th July 2009
Exeter City vs Tottenham 0:3
It was not only a game of two halves, but also two Spurs teams at St James Park and the combined effort resulted in a 3-0 victory over Exeter City.
A first half goal from Jamie O'Hara was added to in the second period by Aaron Lennon and Darren Bent, but the key figure in the second 45 was home goalkeeper Paul Jones who produced a string of fine saves.
David Bentley carved out the opening chance on a bright warm evening in Devon, whipping in a precision cross from the right after linking up with Alan Hutton, the ball being met by the head of Jermain Defoe. The little striker, partnering Robbie Keane in the first half, stole in and his effort forced Jones in the Exeter goal into a double take before he was able to gather safely.
A Pascal Chimbonda cross was just missed by Defoe on 17 minutes following a fairly fallow period of the half as players of both sides met the objective of picking up fitness and regaining touch.
After a spell of pressure and a couple of corners in quick succession, Tom Huddlestone decided to employ his shooting boots with a rasping drive that flashed narrrowly over the bar.
The deadlock was broken in the 32nd minute, a Hutton cross falling for Keane to drive and test the reflexes of Jones. The ball ran loose and O'Hara was alive to the opening and drilled in low to the keeper's left.
Defoe then spun in the box and forced another save from Jones, but a more challenging one came when Huddlestone brilliantly chipped into the area and Keane was there to connect. The second goal looked very much on the cards until a last-ditch divert from the goalkeeper.
The second half team got off to a lively start with Michael Dawson striking an upright and Kevin Prince Boateng trying his luck from all of 40 yards. Jones then made a smart save to deny Roman Pavlyuchenko.
Jones, moments later, was called on to scoop away athletically what initially appeared to be a cross from Luka Modric, but quickly became clear that it was sailing into the top corner. Next it was a thwarting of Boateng, who took aim and arrowed towards the top right, before Lennon threaded Bent through on goal and the keeper somehow kept the score at 1-0.
At the other end Richard Logan hit one out of the blue after the hour that forced debutant David Button into a fine tip over.
In the 69th minute the advantage was finally doubled after first Pavlyuchenko struck a post, but the ball eventually fell to Lennon - after clever play from Modric - and the England man made no mistake from around 10 yards out.
The second half team quickly achieved a fluency to their play and absolutely dominated the home side with incisive passing and smart running.
Modric was a key component and cleverly created a chance for Bent on the run 15 minutes from time - Bent's speed enabling him to ease onto the ball, but his shot on the run from an angle was just off target.
He was no such thing on 81 minutes, as he pounced and finished after a Pavlyuchenko shot from distance was not gathered by Jones. The ball was only spilt a couple of feet away, but Bent was so quick in seizing on the opportunity to make it 3-0. Wilson Palacios later had an effort cleared off the line.
It was no surprise when Paul Jones was named Man of the Match - he certainly had his hands kept warm, especially in the second half.
1st half team: Cudicini, Hutton, Chimbonda, Dervite, Corluka, Bentley, O'Hara, Huddlestone, Rose, Keane, Defoe.
2nd half team: Button, Gunter, Assou-Ekotto, Dawson, Livermore, Lennon, Boateng, Palacios, Modric, Bent, Pavlyuchenko.

Bournemouth vs Tottenham 0:3
Just like the 3-0 win at Exeter on Wednesday night, it was nearly a game of two teams again, but this time Carlo Cudicini and Tom Huddlestone went the distance, while Jake Livermore played 75 minutes after replacing the injured David Bentley.
Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe and Wilson Palacios netted the goals that secured the victory on the route home from the training camp week in Devon.
Cudicini and then Michael Dawson were called to prevent Bournemouth snatching a lead inside the first five minutes, the goalkeeper being alert to an inswinging corner, while the central defender threw himself in front of a goalbound effort from Jason Pearce.
A Danny Rose cross from the left was nodded wide by David Bentley after 11 minutes before Ryan Garry reacted well when Robbie Keane was headed through by Darren Bent, Garry making a superb tackle to deny the Irishman a run on goal.
The start was a little sluggish - again, like Exeter - and conditions were perhaps taking a bit of time to adjust to, given the wind gusting into Dean Court from the end yet to have a stand built behind the goal.
Bentley was upended and hurt in challenge just outside the area on 15 minutes and, such was the force of the tackle by Warren Cummings, the wide man was forced from the pitch and eventually replaced by Jake Livermore. Tom Huddlestone thumped the resulting free-kick just past the post.
Livermore slotted in at left-back, allowing Danny Rose to push on, while Luka Modric switched to the right.
Brett Pitman crashed a free-kick into the side netting after a Kevin-Prince Boateng foul at the top right-hand corner of the penalty area, but the home side found themselves in arrears on 27 minutes.
Bent picked out the run of his strike partner Keane to the left of the area and the skipper executed a low finish beyond former Spurs Academy keeper Shwan Jalal.
Cudicini was forced into a smothering block six minutes before the break to deny Jeff Goulding, who had plotted a route into the danger area.
The second half team were nearly quick off the mark with a snap shot from Jamie O'Hara that Jalal did well to thwart down to his left.
He could do nothing about our second on 55 minutes. Livermore retained possession, beating his markers in a tight spot before picking out Jermain Defoe and the little hitman struck low to Jalal's right and into the bottom corner.
Jalal was again picking the ball out of his net on 67 minutes when, after making a save from Defoe, he could do nothing when Wilson Palacios seized on the rebound to make it 3-0.
Defoe then rattled the bar with Jalal beaten all ends up, while Huddlestone later forced the keeper into a flying save to his right, tipping around post.
Like at Exeter, the second half performance was more polished than the first.
Next up it is Peterborough on Tuesday night at London Road.
1st half team: Cudicini; Chimbonda, Dawson, Dervite, Rose; Bentley (Livermore, 15), Huddlestone, Boateng, Modric; Keane, Bent.
2nd half team: Cudicini; Hutton, Corluka, Livermore, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Huddlestone, Palacios, O'Hara; Pavlyuchenko, Defoe.

Tue 21st July 2009
Harry Redknapp's side made it three wins in three games for this pre-season so far with a convincing 4-0 victory at Championship side Peterborough United.
Darren Bent's 35th minute opener was added to in the second half by Jermain Defoe, Luka Modric, and Roman Pavlyuchenko, as we stepped up our preparations for the coming campaign.
We now prepare to face Barcelona and Celtic in this weekend's Wembley Cup competition with our first league game of the season now less than a month away.
The first half at London Road was pretty much one-way traffic towards the home goal as we retained possession superbly and always looked to probe.
We first got in behind the Posh defence on five minutes when a one-two with Wilson Palacios released captain Jermaine Jenas clean through on goal, only for the midfielder to be upended on the edge of the box by defender Craig Morgan.
Had this not been a pre-season friendly, recriminations could have been in the offing for the defender, but as it was, both he and his side escaped punishment on this occasion.
Three minutes later, such punishment should have been served out by Pavlyuchenko, who was picked out at the back post by Jamie O'Hara. But the Russian put his free header wide of the post from six yards.
His strike-partner Bent was also looking to get in on the act, and it was Pavlyuchenko who nearly found him with a neat back heel in the box on 18 minutes, that was just out of the reach of last season's top scorer.
Bent did force home goalkeeper Joe Lewis into action four minutes later with a curling shot from the edge of the box, that the England Under-21 stopper was equal to.
The home side's only opening of the half in fact resulted in a disallowed goal, after a neat move involving ex-Spur Charlie Lee, Ben Wright and skipper George Boyd, who released Lee Frecklington to finish after he was flagged for offside.
But our dominance soon resumed a minute later when Aaron Lennon picked out Pavlyuchenko at the back post, who hit a sweet left-foot volley straight at Lewis.
‘Pav' was still looking for his first goal of the summer, and he let fly again on the half-hour mark with a 30-yard effort that whistled just wide.
He then turned provider for Jenas on 33 minutes to hit a low shot from the edge of the box that again was not far off.
But 10 minutes from half-time, it was Bent who made no mistake after being released over the top of the defence by Jenas' neat chip to slot coolly low to Lewis' left.
Jenas forced the keeper into another stop before the break with Darren Ferguson's men lucky to still be in the game.
Harry Redknapp made another host of half-time substitutions. One of them, Defoe, broke five minutes after the break and played in Palacios, who picked out Pavlyuchenko with a slide-rule pass. But the striker couldn't get his shot on target on the stretch and could only find the side-netting.
Carlo Cudicini was then forced into his first save of the night as Boyd burst into our box on 62 minutes but hit a tame shot straight at the Italian.
And Posh were punished minutes later when another of our subs, Modric, who had taken over the captain's armband from Jenas, sent Defoe clean through, and although Lewis stopped the first effort, the striker tapped the rebound home for his second goal of pre-season.
Modric himself then put us 3-0 ahead on 68 minutes after Pascal Chimbonda's cross from the right found its way to him at the back post.
Cudicini made another save from Shaun Batt on 72 minutes, but the inevitable Spurs victory was made even more convincing by Pavlyuchenko 15 minutes from time.
It was certainly the goal of the game, as Lennon cut in from the right and found the striker 25 yards out. The curling shot inside Lewis' far post was sublime and deserved reward for Roman's impressive contribution on the night.
Defoe could have added to the tally further six minutes from time but blazed Benoit Assou-Ekotto's excellent cross over from point-blank range.
Substitute Jake Livermore also forced Lewis into a stoppage time save with a curling shot, but the 4-0 scoreline was satisfying enough.
Spurs (4-4-2): Cudicini (Jansson, 83); Chimbonda, Corluka (Huddlestone, 46), Dervite, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Palacios, Jenas (Boateng, 46, (Livermore, 66)), O'Hara (Modric, 46); Bent (Defoe, 46), Pavlyuchenko

Deal agreed for Sheffield United duo
We are delighted to announce the signings of Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker from Sheffield United.
A fee has not been disclosed but could be close to the £10m mark for the duo.
Naughton, a 20-year-old full-back, made 50 appearances for his hometown club last season scoring three times, having only made his debut for The Blades against Port Vale in the League Cup last August and his performances were rewarded with a place in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.
The England Under-21 international had previously enjoyed a six-month loan at Gretna in the Scottish Premier League from January, 2008 where he appeared on 19 occasions.
Walker, 19, made his competitive debut in November, 2008 against Oldham Athletic during a six-month loan spell with Northampton Town in League One where he played nine times.
The Sheffield-born England Under-19 defender returned to Bramall Lane in January and featured in seven matches including starting all three games in Sheffield United's run to the Championship Play-off Final.

Aldershot 3, Spurs XI 1
Kyle Naughton made an instant impression on his Spurs debut in Wednesday's friendly at Aldershot.
The full-back signed alongside team-mate Kyle Walker from Sheffield United crossed superbly for Danny Rose to head home in the 74th minute at the Recreation Ground.
That made it 1-1 against the League Two side and appeared to open the door for a victory.
However, the home side managed to find another gear and late goals from Reece Connolly and Adam Hinshelwood secured a 3-1 victory.
Naughton shared right-back duties with Alan Hutton and looked lively in the second half, bombing forward at every oppprtunity.
Unfortunately his display was a rare highlight in what Development Coach Clive Allen admitted was a disappointing performance overall in our Spurs XI's first friendly of the summer.
Heurelho Gomes returned in goal after an extended summer break after his selection for the Brazil squad in the Confederations Cup while Adel Taarabt was allowed to roam in a 4-4-2 system with Jon Obika leading the line.
The team was rocked by an opening goal for the home side with less than three minutes on the clock when Anthony Straker made progress down the left and crossed low for Danny Hylton to sweep home from 10 yards.
Aldershot were organised defensively and too often our attacking moves broke down on the edge of the area.
Garry Waddock's men carved out the better chances as John Grant twice missed the target and Chris Blackburn somehow failed to connect in front of goal.
Despite all that, it took the save of the match from Mikheal Jaimez-Ruiz to deny Dean Parrett in the 36th minute as the keeper tipped away the midfielder's drive destined for the top corner.
Paul-Jose Mpoku joined the fray for the second half and went close twice before Naughton's dart down the right and cross on the run was met by the high-climbing Rose who planted his header across Jaimez-Ruiz and home.
We were expected to push on from there but Aldershot managed to grab the lead again with seven minutes remaining as Connolly did well to convert Hudson's cross.
The home side then wrapped it up in the final minute as Scott Donnelly curled in a free-kick from the right and Hinshelwood directed his header beyond Ben Alnwick and into the far corner.
Aldershot: Jaimez-Ruiz, Straker (Donnelly, 62), Blackburn (Hudson, 62), Charles (Winfield, 62), Soares (Connolly, 81), Chalmers, Grant (Harding, 62), Hylton (Mekki, 81), Martin (Hinshelwood, 62), Halls (Sandell, 62), Hall (Herd, 62).
Spurs XI: Gomes (Alnwick, 46); Hutton (Naughton, 46), Butcher (Blackwood, 62), Archibald-Henville (Carroll, 78), Smith; Parret (Mpoku, 46), Bostock, Livermore, Rose; Taarabt (Cox, 62), Obika.

Spurs trio in race for season bow
Tottenham defensive trio Jonathan Woodgate, Michael Dawson and Ledley King are all doubtful for the Premier League opener against Liverpool.
The central defensive trio will miss Tottenham's pre-season Wembley Cup matches against Barcelona and Celtic.
Dawson is out with an Achilles injury while Woodgate has flown to America to see a specialist about his groin and King has long-standing knee problems.
"All three are doubts for the start of the season," said boss Harry Redknapp.
"In all honesty it is not an ideal situation."
Dawson picked up his injury during a pre-season game against Bournemouth and Redknapp is pessimistic about their chances of facing Liverpool on 16 August.
"Ledley hasn't kicked a ball yet this season, so it is not looking great on that front at the moment," added Redknapp.
In the trio's absence, Dorian Dervite could get a chance to impress - the 20-year-old made his only competitive start in November 2006 - while Vedran Corluka and Tom Huddlestone can also play at centre-back.
Tottenham play Barcelona on Friday and Celtic on Sunday with strike duo Roman Pavlyuchenko (thigh) and Robbie Keane (groin) also doubtful. The club's first Premier League fixture is at home to liverpool on Sunday,

Jake saves the day!
Jake Livermore celebrated his new contract with a goal to remember as we drew our Wembley Cup opener against Barcelona on Friday night.
The young midfielder, just 19, put pen to paper on a new deal this week - announced only earlier on Friday - and made it a night he'll never forget by heading home the equaliser against the European champions just two minutes after entering the fray as a substitute.
We were staring a rare friendly defeat in the face when Robbie Keane took a quick corner to Benoit Assou-Ekotto, the left-back whipped in a fine cross and Livermore threw himself full length to beat keeper Jose Maria Pinto to the ball in the air and plant his header into the corner.
Both teams were without first team regulars - we'd lost centre-backs Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson to injury, while there was no Messi, Eto'o, Iniesta, Xavi, Henry or Puyol for our illustrious opponents, although both Messi and Henry were at the stadium.
It meant Vedran Corluka and Tom Huddlestone lined-up in central defence as Harry Redknapp went for a 4-5-1 formation in the first half, Jermain Defoe the lone striker.
Ya Ya Toure, Eric Abidal, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Bojan Krkic were the familiar faces in the Barca side.
Chances were far and few between in that opening period. Krkic showed clever awareness in attempting to lob Carlo Cudicini before Pedro Rodriguez burst through two challenges and fired low to the near post, Cudicini this time producing a fine save to his left in the 20th minute.
Barca's goal arrived 12 minutes later and owed a lot to Toure's burst from midfield as he somehow evaded tackles from Wilson Palacios and Corluka before his progress was halted emphatically by Huddlestone's fine tackle. No luck though - the ball ran straight into Krkic's path and he drilled low past Cudicini.
Our biggest problem in the first half was hanging onto the ball and when we gave it away, Barcelona weren't surrendering it in a hurry, one of the world masters of maintaining possession.
We came closest with two efforts in the space of seconds towards the end of the half.
Palacios broke forward in the 39th minute and released Modric to his left, the Croatian hammered towards goal and his effort cannoned back off the crossbar but play continued, Aaron Lennon crossed deep and Assou-Ekotto's volley into the ground was tipped over by Albert Jorquera.
Kyle Naughton - his first team debut - Pascal Chimbonda and Heurelho Gomes joined Keane in the action in the second half as we switched to a 4-4-2 formation, Chimbonda to centre-half, Huddlestone in midfield.
Still chances were at a premium. Huddlestone's rocket hit Keita and deflected just wide and then Albert Dalmau looked to have handled Modric's corner, appeals waved away.
Pinto made a brave save at the feet of Modric as we started to gain a territorial advantage but the threat was always there at the other end, Gomes forced to save from Jeffren Suarez before Ruben Rochina looped a header over.
Youngsters Danny Rose, John Bostock and Dorian Dervite all entered the fray but it was Livermore's moment to shine - hopefully the first of many in a Spurs shirt.
Celtic are next up for us on Sunday (4pm) - the Scottish giants hammered Egyptians Al Alhy 5-0 in the first game.
Spurs: Cudicini (Gomes, 46); Hutton (Naughton, 46), Corluka, Huddlestone (Bostock, 80), Assou-Ekotto (Dervite, 84); Lennon, Palacios (Livermore, 80), Jenas (Chimbonda, 46), O'Hara (Keane, 46), Modric (Rose, 74); Defoe. Subs: Obika.
Barcelona: 1st half: Jorquera; Montoya, Caceres, Fontas, Abidal; Toure, Gudjonsen, Sanchez; Assulin, Rodriguez, Krkic.
2nd half: Pinto, Dalmau, Adriano, Muniesa, Espasandin, Rueda, Keita, Dos Santos, Suarez, Rochina, Oriol.
Livermore剛續完約就立刻入波,真係唔錯...

Redknapp keen on ex-Gunner Vieira
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says he would have no problem in bringing former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira to White Hart Lane.
Vieira, 33, played more than 400 games for Arsenal, but is said to be eager to join the Gunners' bitter rivals.
And Redknapp, speaking after Spurs 1-1 friendly draw with Barcelona at Wembley on Friday, said: "I'm still interested in Patrick and he wants to play here.
"He hasn't killed anyone, he's just a great player who played for Arsenal."
Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups in nine seasons with the Gunners and scored the winning penalty in the 2005 FA Cup final shoot-out against Manchester United with his final kick in an Arsenal shirt.
The Frenchman moved to Juventus in the summer of 2005 for £13.7m, before switching to Inter where he has won the last two Serie A titles.
Vieria has also been linked with moves to Olympique Lyonnais and Paris St Germain, and Premier League new boys Birmingham in recent weeks as he seeks more regular first-team action.

Pompey accept Spurs' Crouch offer
Portsmouth have accepted an offer from Tottenham for England striker Peter Crouch, says Pompey boss Paul Hart.
A reported £10m deal was agreed on Saturday after Spurs made a renewed effort to sign the 28-year-old.
Crouch is expected to sign a five-year deal with Spurs, where he will reunite with former Pompey boss Harry Redknapp.
"Given the severe financial restraints in place here we had no choice but to accept an offer from Spurs," Hart told the Sunday Mirror.
"Obviously, I'm disappointed to see Peter leave. (But) I think people need to realise that Pompey have been punching way above their weight and could no longer sustain the level of spending that has gone on here over the past three years.
"And even though a new owner is poised to come in, our dealings in the market will be modest in comparison to the past."
Crouch is expected to sign early next week and could even travel with the club to Beijing, where Spurs will compete in the Asia Cup alongside West Ham, Hull and Beijing Guoan.
Tottenham, with whom Crouch started his career, will be the third club at which the striker has played under Redknapp, after spells with the 62-year-old at Southampton and Portsmouth in the past.
The deal comes despite hints from Redknapp last week that it would be too expensive.
He said at the time: "I just feel that for that type of money it is an awful lot of money. It is an expensive deal because there is no return on it.
"I don't know whether it is possible for us to do that type of deal. It is an expensive deal. The whole package looks expensive."
However, Portsmouth reportedly agreed to drop their £12m asking price in order to do the deal after Crouch made it clear he wanted to return to Tottenham.
His arrival could hasten the departure of Darren Bent, with Sunderland reportedly keen to sign the 25-year-old.
Portsmouth, meanwhile, could yet offload more players this summer despite Sulaiman Al Fahim's takeover of the club nearing completion.
The property tycoon has been named Pompey chairman, but Hart does not expect a Manchester City-style spree.
"It's important everybody understands that we have to cut our cloth," Hart, who has been appointed on a permanent basis, told BBC Radio 5 Live. "The days of £20m buys are over in the short-term, but maybe not longer-term."

Celtic vs Tottenham 2-0 Wembley Cup [26/07/09] Highlights
fiendray
07-27-09, 10:02 AM
Celtic end friendly run
Four years after inflicting our last friendly defeat, Celtic struck again to beat us 2-0 in Sunday's Wembley Cup encounter.
We hadn't lost a friendly since that 2-0 reverse at Celtic Park back on August 9, 2004 but the end of that sequence was on the cards once Georgios Samaras smashed home Celtic's second goal in the 40th minute at Wembley.
Harry Redknapp made a number of changes at half-time and a revival looked on the cards as we carved out a couple of chances in the early exchanges of the second half, but it wasn't to be.
Still without our three senior central defenders Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson, Harry opted to start with Dorian Dervite and Pascal Chimbonda in front of keeper Heurelho Gomes, with Robbie Keane and Darren Bent up front.
Celtic - who hammered Al Alhy 5-0 in their tournament opener before our 1-1 draw against Barcelona on Friday night - took the initiative in the ninth minute.
Paul Caddis burst down the right and his cross was an open invitation for Chris Killen to plant a header into the top corner from eight yards.
We created three chances in our best spell in the next 15 minutes.
All three fell to Darren Bent - the first via Huddlestone's tackle and Keane's pass was blocked by Lukasz Zaluska's legs, the second a difficult header from Wilson Palacios' cross looped straight at the keeper and the third, a snapshot at the near post that flew over.
Zaluska didn't do so well with Huddlestone's 20-yarder on the half-hour, spilling what was a straight-forward save and he was lucky the rebound dissected Keane and Chimbonda for a tap-in.
Samaras put Celtic in control with a fine goal after 40 minutes. The striker turned Dervite just inside the Celtic half and managed to keep Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Chimbonda at bay in a run to the box before unleashing an unstoppable drive from 16 yards. Killen then angled a drive inches wide just before the break.
Carlo Cudicini, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Luka Modric, Kyle Naughton, Jermain Defoe, Vedran Corluka, Danny Rose and Jake Livermore all entered the fray at half-time.
The game might have been beyond us had Paddy McCourt found the finish to a Ricky Villa-esque dribble two minutes into the second half, the midfielder leaving five players in his wake but placing his effort wide of the target.
Our response was immediate as Livermore drilled just wide and then Darren O'Dea somehow managed to clear Luka Modric's effort off the line from O'Hara's cross. Livermore - goalscorer against Barca on Friday - then tried his luck again and Zaluska did well to get down to the young midfielder's precision sidefoot.
The chances then dried up at both ends until Niall McGinn flashed a shot just over in the 71st minute.
John Bostock, enjoying the Wembley experience again alongside fellow youngsters Naughton, Rose and Jon Obika, then fired in a low cross that evaded Defoe's toe by a fraction as he slid in.
That was that - China awaits!

Gio goes for Gold!
Giovani Dos Santos played a starring role as Mexico lifted the CONCACAF Gold Cup with an emphatic 5-0 victory over fierce rivals and hosts USA in the final.
The forward won a penalty for his side's first goal and scored the second to set them on the way to their first win on US soil in nearly a decade.
Gio was also awarded Player of the Tournament - in what is the central American version of the European Championships.
"I believe this is a great win for Mexico because we showed the pride we have in our hearts today," Gio said.
"This is a huge step for us, and the win injects us with some motivation, confidence and maturity."
Mexico advanced having topped their group before a convincing 4-0 victory over Haiti in the first knockout phase.
They then took on Costa Rica in the semi-finals, needing a penalty shoot-out victory to send them into the final.

Crouch deal agreed
We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Portsmouth for the transfer of Peter Crouch to the Club, following the player successfully completing a medical examination and agreeing personal terms.
The England international scored 16 goals in all competitions last season during his second spell at Portsmouth having previously enjoyed eight months at Fratton Park from July 2001 where he scored 19 goals in 39 games.
The 28-year-old joined Aston Villa in March 2002, before moving to Southampton for the start of the 2004/05 campaign. His performances at St Mary's attracted the attentions of Liverpool and after just one season at Southampton, where he scored 16 times in 33 games, he moved to Anfield.
The striker, who began his career with the Club as a trainee before signing for QPR in July 2000, made 132 appearances during three seasons on Merseyside and scored 40 times.
The fee for Crouch is believed to be in the region of £10m and the contract reported to be for five years and worth £70,000 a week.

The striker was strapped in his seat just before take off when the call came that the two clubs were close to agreeing a deal. JD strikes Hammer blow
Jermain Defoe pounced to beat West Ham and book a place in the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy against Hull City on Friday.
The in-form striker latched onto Aaron Lennon's pass in the 75th minute and slotted low past Robert Green for the 1-0 win at the Worker's Stadium in Beijing, China.
Hull beat local favourites Beijing Gouan 4-3 on penalties as the evening's second game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
We will now meet the Tigers in the final kicking-off at 8.30pm local time, 1.30pm UK.
The victory was no less than we deserved afer dominating for long periods and carving out the best chances from the first to the last minute on another hot and humid night in Beijing.
Indeed, West Ham rarely threatened - Carlton Cole scooped their best chance over from close range in the 82nd minute.
In a lively opening few seconds Jamie O'Hara sent Kyle Naughton scampering away down the right and the new boy, operating in right midfield, nearly caught Green by surprise with a rising cross-shot. Captain Luka Modric then fired wide following the resulting corner.
It was the team in white setting the pace, with O'Hara providing the promptings in midfield, while Wilson Palacios scurried and snapped back possession when required.
Green took two takes to grab hold of a Roman Pavlyuchenko shot from distance before Naughton drilled just across the face of goal seconds after Luis Boa Morte was stretchered off following a collision with Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
O'Hara dispossessed Mark Noble and slipped through to Pavlyuchenko, who curled his effort onto the post, with the rebound blocked by James Collins. Tom Huddlestone fired just wide from a free-kick from 30 yards in the 16th minute as the pressure was cranked up on the East London side.
Naughton cut back a deep ball from the left from O'Hara, teeing up half a chance for Pavlyuchenko, which was blocked with the Russian looking poised to open the scoring. O'Hara was next to opt for a curler with right-footed effort after moving in from the left, with Pavlyuchenko smashing just over the bar moments later.
It was pretty much one-way traffic with West Ham offering little in the way of an offensive contribution. It was a dominant display with plenty of creative possession, just lacking a goal.
The excellent Modric again turned on the style three minutes before the break, skipping forward but, like his teammates before him, just failing to land a shot inside of Green's left hand upright.
There was one change after the break with Robbie Keane taking over from Pavlyuchenko, while the verve and slick interchange of the first half was quickly in evidence with the skipper immediately linking well with Defoe.
Keane proceeded the chip into the path of his strike partner, who was clear of his marker, but his shot on the turn was narrowly too high.
O'Hara and Mark Noble were booked on 55 minutes following a coming together between the England Under-21 teammates before some quick-footed trickery from Defoe took him around Collins but he was unable to keep his shot down.
The pressure was fairly unrelenting with West Ham largely pinned back in their own half, while Harry Redknapp looked to increase the pressure with the introduction of Aaron Lennon with 20 minutes remaining in place of Naughton.
The deadlock was nearly broken when Keane played in Modric inside the area, but Green advanced quickly and managed to block his effort.
On 75 minutes the gate was finally unlocked when Lennon squeezed Defoe clear and the little hitman struck an effort that Green could not hold and the ball rolled into the net.
It was a more than deserved goal to cap a polished and encouraging performance at this stage in pre-season.
Spurs: Cudicini; Hutton, Corluka, Huddlestone, Assou-Ekotto; Naughton (Lennon 70), Palacios (Livermore, 83), O'Hara, Modric; Pavlyuchenko (Keane 46), Defoe. Unused subs: Gomes, Chimbonda, Dervite, Rose, Obika, Bostock.

Lads lift Barclays Asia Trophy
Robbie Keane netted twice and Aaron Lennon added the late icing on the cake as we beat Hull City 3-0 to win the Barclays Asia Trophy in Beijing on Friday.
It was another impressive display at the Worker's Stadium and the winning tally could easily have been greater as Hull were pinned back in their own half for much of the encounter.
Keane opened the scoring in a dominant first half display and after Heurelho Gomes made two saves in a minute in Hull's best spell in the second half, Jermain Defoe was brought down and the captain made no mistake from the spot.
It was then left to Lennon to drill home Kyle Naughton's cross from close range with two minutes left to complete the job.
There was a one-minute silence before kick-off following the sad passing of Sir Bobby Robson and both sets of players sported black armbands as a mark of respect.
The opening exchanges were more end-to-end than on Wednesday against West Ham with Hull showing attacking intent, but the first incisive move came from Keane when he attempted to play in Defoe, but the scorer of the winner in the opening game was squeezed out.
Lennon zipped down the right and drilled in a low cross but an orange shirt was quickest to read his intentions.
Luka Modric lofted a ball over the top and into the path of Keane moments later but Tony Warner in the Hull goal managed to advance and block, Steve Mouyokolo doing likewise when Modric found himself in a shooting position after having earlier attempted to supply Keane.
The passing and movement became more and more fluent as the 15 minute mark approached and Lennon was displaying speed and skill in equal measure, rounding Andy Dawson and striking in a shot that took a deflection before the outstretched arm of Warner managed to divert.
Modric displayed wonderful vision in the 16th minute with an outstanding crossfield pass that set Keane scampering away on goal, the skipper taking the ball in his stride before firing past Warner. The goalkeeper got a hand to the shot, but could not prevent the goal.
A combination of Lennon and Defoe came close to extending the lead before Daniel Cousin shook off the attentions of Tom Huddlestone and drilled across the face of the goal guarded by Heurelho Gomes.
Defoe forced a fine save out of Warner down low to his right after a clever pass from Jermaine Jenas before Gomes was called into action with a smart stop to deny ex-Spur Dean Marney.
Defoe looked set to score in the 36th minute when he superby controlled a Huddlestone ball over the top and poked past Warner but also just beyond the post.
The pressure was applied again at the beginning of the second half, with Modric central in most attacking forays. Hull's response was a thumping drive from Marney that flew just wide.
Jenas, back in the side after a hip problem, was replaced by Kyle Naughton just after the hour, just before two excellent saves from Gomes to deny Geovanni and Caleb Folan.
Huddlestone turned provider again in the 69th minute, feeding Defoe who was in turn upended by Warner.
Referee Mr Atkinson pointed to the spot and Keane did the honours, stroking to Warner's left to double the advantage and record his second of the night.
Alan Hutton was next to be introduced, taking the place of Pascal Chimbonda with Jake Livermore soon following for Palacios.
Two of the substitutes played a significant part in the third goal as Hutton raided down the right and fed Naughton, who picked his cross perfectly for Lennon to finish in style two minutes from time.
Spurs: Gomes, Chimbonda (Hutton 77), Assou-Ekotto, Corluka, Huddlestone, Lennon, Jenas (Naughton 62), Palacios (Livermore 83), Modric, Keane, Defoe. Unused subs: Cudicini, Dervite, Rose, Obika, Pavlyuchenko, Bostock, O'Hara.
Hull: Warner, Doyle (Cooper, 85), Mouyokolo, Zayatte, Dawson, Featherstone (Kilbane, 61), Marney, Boateng (Halmosi, 81), Carney (Atkinson, 74), Barmby (Geovanni, 46), Cousin (Folan, 59).

I couldn't ask for more - Harry
Harry Redknapp described the squad's attitude and application in China as 'top class' after lifting the Barclays Asia Trophy on Friday.
Two goals from Robbie Keane and a late strike from Aaron Lennon secured the trophy with a 3-0 win against Hull City at the Worker's Stadium in Beijing.
The performance was all the more impressive considering it was only 48 hours after dominating in a similar fashion against West Ham in the intense heat and humidity of Beijing.
"The lads have worked hard and showed a great attitude in both games," recflected Harry.
"I couldn't have asked for more - they've been top class in the way they've behaved and the way they've played. They've been a pleasure to be with out here.
"It was great to come and win the tournament and play well against two good teams from the Premier League. It's been well-organised, we've enjoyed the trip and it's been good for us."
Harry raised a smile when it was pointed out that he'd become the most successful manager in the tournament having won it last time out with Portsmouth in Hong Kong in 2007.
"Winning's a good habit," he said. "It was great to come here and win but it's all about what we do at the start of the season. That's what really counts."
Speaking of Hong Kong, the lads now fly from China to Hong Kong for a friendly against South China FC at the Hong Kong National Stadium on Sunday. We kick-off at 5.30pm local time, 10.30am UK.

Tottenham striker Darren Bent has apologised for an online rant that accused Spurs chairman Daniel Levy of disrupting his move to Sunderland.
I appreciate that transfers are seldom straightforward and are often complex. However, after a long period of waiting following my withdrawal from the plane to China, I had become incredibly frustrated by the time these things take and I posted inappropriate comments on my Twitter site.
I allowed my emotions to get in the way of my better judgement. I regret my actions and did not intend to offend Daniel Levy or anyone with the nature or the content of my posting.

Zhang takes SC to victory
Zhang Chunhui saved his best for Spurs as South China took the honours in Sunday's friendly in Hong Kong.
The home goalkeeper produced a string of fine saves to frustrate us in the heat of the magnificent Hong Kong National Stadium.
Those frustrations were furthered by a poor penalty decision given against Jake Livermore - who simply stood his ground in the area and was run into by Chao Peng Fei - and a 2-0 lead was enough for the organised home side in conditions hardly suited to chasing a game.
Chan Siu Ki had a dart through on goal in the eighth minute before quickly becoming entangled with the defensive pairing of Pascal Chimbonda and Jake Livermore, the South China player ending up grounded.
Our first effort on goal came on 15 minutes when Roman Pavlyuchenko tried his luck from 20 yards, Zhang Chunhui fielded fairly comfortably. Danny Rose, operating at left-back, later fizzed over a low cross that the propelled head of Jon Obika could not quite reach.
John Bostock unleashed a rasping drive that Zhang did well to push over the bar before an Obika cutback ran into the path of Alan Hutton, whose goalbound shot was blocked.
Pavlyuchenko then forced another save out of Zhang from a piledriver launched from outside the area.
The half was a little sluggish, but the stifling conditions with very high humidity must have made an increased tempo approach an unlikely option.
There was however an increase in attacking players on the pitch at the beginning of the second half when Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe took the places of Hutton and Jermaine Jenas. Heurelho Gomes replaced Carlo Cudicini.
Keane took up position in central midfield, Obika went wide right, Kyle Naughton dropped in at right-back, with Defoe partnering Pavlyuchenko up front.
The deadlock was broken in the 52nd minute when Chan seized on a bouncing ball and struck a sliced shot from 25 yards. The spin of the ball took it arrowing towards the top corner and, despite Gomes getting fingertips to the effort, it was quickly nestling in the back of the net.
Defoe spun inside the area and created himself a clear shooting opportunity but couldn't keep his shot down before Keane latched on to a high ball from Jamie O'Hara and clipped onto the upright.
Jake Livermore came together with Chao Peng Fei in the 68th minute and won the ball. Referee Mr Ng, to the disbelief of the team, pointed to the penalty spot and the captain Li Haiqiang dinked his spotkick past Gomes to double the home advantage.
Gomes prevented a third with 15 minutes left on the clock, thwarting a swift counter-attack and shot from Chao that saw four attackers against two defenders.
Zhang saved well from Pavlyuchenko and then denied substitute Aaron Lennon, fittingly the last serious action of the game.
Team: Cudicini (Gomes 46), Hutton (Keane 46), Rose, Chimbonda, Livermore, Naughton, Jenas (Defoe 46), O'Hara, Bostock, Pavlyuchenko (Modric 82), Obika (Lennon 69).

Sunderland close to Bent capture
Sunderland are hopeful they will complete the signing of Tottenham and England striker Darren Bent on Tuesday.
Bent, 25, is understood to have had a medical at Sunderland on Monday and assistant manager Eric Black told BBC Radio 5 Live: "We're very close.
"I wouldn't say we're 100% confident we're going to get him and we're hopeful that in the next 24 hours he'll be a Sunderland player."
Bent would become the club's record signing if the move goes through.
The fee of about £14m would beat the previous record of £9m which Sunderland paid Hearts £9m for goalkeeper Craig Gordon in 2007.
Bent has long been a target for Black Cats boss Steve Bruce but the two clubs have, until recently, failed to reach agreement over the fee.
Black is hopeful Bent's arrival would help persuade other players to join a club that has had some trouble attracting top names to move to the Stadium of Light.
He added: "His record in the Premier League is outstanding, I think he's scored about 50 goals in 100-odd appearances, a phenomenal return.
"There's a plethora of different things we think he'll bring to Sunderland. He's a big name, he's somebody who has proved he's a Premier League striker and his return in goals per game is exceptional.
"So getting someone like him up here can only be good for us, and if it can encourage one or two others to take the leap we believe we're going in the right direction."
Bent's signing will take Sunderland's summer spending past the £20m mark.
Lorik Cana, Fraizer Campbell and Paulo da Silva have already arrived at the Stadium of Light this summer, with Bruce flexing his financial muscle following American billionaire Ellis Short's takeover of the club.
But Bruce's pursuit of Bent has proved a frustrating one, with Spurs understood to be holding out for close to the £16.5m they paid Charlton for the striker's services in 2007.
Bent has also been annoyed at the lack of movement and had to apologise on Friday for comments he made relating to the deal on social networking site Twitter.
The striker publicly criticised Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and made it clear he wanted to move to Wearside, despite interest from Stoke and Hull, but later issued a statement reading: "I appreciate that transfers are seldom straightforward.
"I regret my actions and did not intend to offend Daniel Levy or anyone with the nature or the content of my posting."
Bent has fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane despite topping the scoring charts last season following the arrival of Peter Crouch from Portsmouth for £9m earlier this summer.
