VALVE ANNOUNCES LEFT 4 DEAD 2
Sequel to Best-Selling Co-op Thriller Coming This Holiday

June 1, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed co-operative multiplayer thriller.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009’s marquee titles.

“A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008’s top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored gameplay made possible by the AI Director,” said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. “With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games.”

Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.

Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D’s dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players’ performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch.

Supported by a $10+ million marketing campaign, Left 4 Dead has sold over 2.5 million retail copies since it was released in November of 2008. Left 4 Dead 2 is targeted for release on Xbox 360 and the PC on November 17, 2009, and will be launched worldwide with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign across TV, Outdoor, and Online.

All L4D user-created content will work with L4D2
Chet Faliszek criticises "disingenuous" boycotters in soon-to-be published Kikizo interview.
By Edwin Evans-Thirlwell (http://www.kikizo.com/staff.asp)

Valve Corporation veteran and Left 4 Dead 2 project lead Chet Faliszek has told Kikizo that all user-created content for the original Left 4 Dead will be compatible "out of the box" with the sequel.

http://games.kikizo.com/media2008/l4d2/l4d2d.jpg (http://www.kikizo.com/viewer/imageview.asp?l4d2/l4d2.jpg) <!--CAPTION-->
"For modders, everything they make in Left 4 Dead will work in Left 4 Dead 2," Chet revealed during a recent London preview event. "It'll work better if they bring it into Left 4 Dead 2 and recompile it for Left 4 Dead 2, using some of the additions we've made, but it'll work out of the box as well. We just want to make sure that anyone who's making a mod now knows that their time's going to be well spent."

That should go some way towards appeasing members of the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/L4D2boycott), who feel the arrival of a sequel barely a year after the original's release will produce a split player community.

Chet also remarked that Valve had further, yet-to-be finalised plans to bring users of either title together. "We need to have some way that those fans who buy the new game and own the old game, or want to pick up the old the game... We've talked about some kind of way for all of that to work. We don't have anything concrete yet that we can say. But definitely we've thought about community and we've thought about those worlds."

Feedback from the Left 4 Dead modding community has been overwhelmingly positive, Chet went on, despite contrary suggestions from "disingenuous" boycotters.
"We've talked with a lot of those guys. That's one of those things - seeing people saying that modders are having a reaction against it, and having just traded 10 emails with these guys and I know their reaction to it, we've talked about it, and they're OK with it. They understand. So that's kind of disingenuous."
Check back next week for the full interview. Left 4 Dead 2 is slated for release on 17th November.

According to a report over on D’toid, Valve will be showing off the new Special Infected coming to Left 4 Dead 2 at PAX.
This little zombie guy, called The Jockey, will “jump on the backs of Survivors and tear them apart from behind”, while controlling the movements of the Survivor and leading them into areas where zombies are waiting to eat them, caress them, or talk politics.
Or whatever it is zombies do when they get a hold of your character. Regardless, it won’t be nice.
PAX is this weekend, so stick around to find out all about it

美國預訂贈品: in-game棒球棍

http://www.destructoid.com/left-4-de...t-147690.phtml

Pre-order gifts are all the rage these days, and who is Valve to deny a trend? You may have heard that Left 4 Dead 2 will be offering an in-game treat to those who pre-order the sequel at select retailers, and that treat is an exclusive melee weapon, the baseball bat.

The bat will, apparently, not just be a re-skin of the cricket bat that is available to everybody in the game. It will have its own unique characteristics to make it a worthwhile and desirable brain-batterer. Quite how it will be different, I can't quite imagine, but it will be. Maybe it will be gold, like most pre-order goodies.

The best part about the baseball bat is that it won't be so exclusive that you can't play the L4D2 with someone who has it. If someone without the weapon ends up in a game with someone who pre-ordered it, the baseball bat will be available to all. Yay Communism!

"How it'll work is, if you're playing with somebody that's pre-ordered it, everybody playing gets it," confirms Left 4 Dead writer Chet Faliszek.

The baseball bat will be available in both the PC and Xbox 360 version of the game. I eagerly await the trendy Valve haters who will find a way to claim this is evil and bad somehow.

Okay so, technically, we only got our hands on a digital katana, but it was just as awesome. More awesome, in fact, because wielding a real katana against a real zombie isn't so much fun as it is terrifying. But more on that later, this preview needs a setup. We got a chance to try out the recently revealed Dark Carnival campaign in Left 4 Dead 2 (http://joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead-2) and, unsurprisingly, it was a blasting, hacking, slashing good time.

<table align="right" bgcolor="#ffffff" border="0" cellpadding="10" cellspacing="10" width="225" height="90"> <tbody> <tr> <td> The Jockey is ... pulled straight out of Frankenstein's laboratory, complete with a crazy little laugh.

</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Like most Left 4 Dead campaigns, Dark Carnival doesn't just shove the major set piece in your face right away. At first, the survivors wander down a deserted highway. Deserted of all but the living dead, of course. Before long, you'll catch sight of the amusement park in the distance, but you'll have to trek through some marshland before you can get there -- be careful in the deep water, it slows you down significantly. We're not sure why the survivors would head toward a bright, noisy amusement park, but it's probably best not to concern yourself with such things. Maybe they were running low on cotton candy.

While the gameplay remains much the same as our previous (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/left-4-dead-2-hands-on-4-you/) hands- on (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/hands-on-left-4-dead-2/) sessions (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/comic-con-2009-left-4-dead-2-swamp-fever-hands-on/), we did get to see a few new bits. First, we were introduced -- rather suddenly -- to a brand new special type of Infected, the Jockey. The Jockey is a small hunchbacked creature pulled straight out of Frankenstein's laboratory, complete with a crazy little laugh. True to his name, once the Jockey gets close enough, he will jump on a survivor's back and proceed to ride him. The Jockey then controls where the player will go, though players do have a limited ability to fight against him. While the Jockey provides essentially the same function as the Smoker and Charger, his proximity to his victim makes the risk of friendly fire much higher for those trying to remove him.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/l4d-2-clown-pax-2.jpg (http://www.joystiq.com/photos/left4dead-2-pax/2259001/full)

In addition to the Jockey, we also got a chance to try out the Katana. Whatever reservations you might have about using melee weapons, the Katana will instantly dispel them. As it turns out, the weapon is very effective, even against special Infected. Unlike the pistol and shotgun, which work well in close range, there is essentially zero chance of missing your target with the katana. The fact that it slices off limbs relative to where it connects with infected is really just a bonus. Of course, running around with a melee weapon does limit your ability to help teammates escape from the Horde and special Infected, so you might want to keep a decent long range weapon as a backup. That said, we can confirm that the player that had the most kills on our team was the guy who ran around with a baseball bat for the whole round, so melee weapons are definitely enticing.

A few other details: There's a new magnum pistol that downs enemies in a single shot (and blows holes clean through them). There is a grenade launcher available too, though we never actually saw it. We also saw some tips during the loading screen that referred to both an adrenaline power-up and a laser sight. Unfortunately, we weren't able to pry any more details about them from Valve's Chet Faliszek, so we'll just have to wait. Oh, expect many more melee weapons in the game too. Apart from the katana and the previously revealed weapons, we also spotted an acoustic guitar, and we've been told there will be an electric guitar as well.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/l4d2-pax-gunners.jpg (http://www.joystiq.com/photos/left4dead-2-pax/2258998/full)

Finally, we were able to experience one of Dark Carnival's smaller crescendo moments. Traveling through the amusement park, we were faced with a conundrum: A dormant carousel -- flanked by chain link fence on either side -- was between us and where we needed to be. The only option, naturally, was to turn it on and unblock our escape route. Of course, the noise and lights of the ride summoned the living dead like a dinner bell. We fought our way through the carousel, out the other side and then cut our way to the power terminal so we could shut the contraption off again.

All in all, killing zombies with friends is as thrilling as it ever was, and the new additions to the game really do freshen up the experience. At this point, we've had our hands on the game several times, and each time has given us something new to experience. We realize there are still folks out there angry that Valve is releasing a full sequel to Left 4 Dead so soon but, truth be told, our resolve has officially cracked.

All 10 Left 4 Dead 2 melee weapons over here! (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/all-10-left-4-dead-2-melee-weapons-over-here/)

Speaking to Valve's Chet Faliszek at PAX (http://joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009), we asked how many melee weapons will make it into Left 4 Dead 2 (http://joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead-2). At the time, Faliszek told us he wasn't sure, but he knew there were more melee weapons in Left 4 Dead 2 than there were guns in the original game. We followed up with Faliszek after the show and we can now share all ten of the game's melee weapons. Without further ado, they are:

Baseball Bat
Cricket Bat (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/thwack-left-4-dead-2-survivors-play-a-bit-of-cricket/)
Crowbar
Electric Guitar
Fire Axe
Frying Pan
Katana
Machete
Tonfa (police baton)
Chainsaw

The question you have to ask yourself: Which one of these would you abandon your teammates for? Remember, a teammate constricted by a Smoker is a teammate that can't pick up that katana (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/hands-on-with-l4d2s-dark-carnival-and-a-katana/) over there.

During PAX 2009, we stopped by Valve's booth to chat with Chet Faliszek, one of the leading minds behind Left 4 Dead 2. Read on for insight into the differences between Left 4 Dead and its upcoming sequel, the possibility of user-created levels on Xbox 360 and just what's possible with the L4D2 editing tools:

So, you guys have talked about fleshing out the story in Left 4 Dead 2 a bit more, and having a more involved plot. How do you do that with a game like this?

I think that's one of those "I'm just going to ask you to wait and see." Some of it is simply ... Left 4 Dead 1's world was at the same stage every place you went. The infection had been there for a little bit. This time we're seeing what it's like to be in a city before the infection hits. And you see different people's reaction to that, as you cross around the country, and there's some other bits we tie in with the original Left 4 Dead in Left 4 Dead 2 as well.
Are there more traditional story elements this time around? Like more cutscenes?

<table style="width: 225px; height: 160px;" align="right" bgcolor="#ffffff" border="0" cellpadding="10" cellspacing="10"> <tbody> <tr> <td> This time we're seeing what it's like to be in a city before the infection hits

</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Oh no. No no no. We want people to be able to jump in because, for whatever we do, equally there's going to be as many people that just want to start on the fifth campaign and play that first with their friends. We don't want to have that kind of confusion and, really, our goal and our interest is to tell stories in the game; not in cutscenes. I think movies do a really good job of telling that. If you look at the Team Fortress 2 shorts, they do a good job of telling the story there. I'm much more interested in trying to solve the problem of telling the story to players in the game.

The Left 4 Dead featured a lot of back-and-forth banter between the characters. You can even make them say things by hitting the right button. Do you have more of that this time around? Did you play around with that a little more?

Yeah, so we've actually refined our tools a little bit to help us do that a little bit better. And there's a couple other little pieces that help do that and make it feel, hopefully, a little more natural.

How many melee weapons are there in Left 4 Dead 2? Do you have a count?

You know, I meant to get that because someone asked me that yesterday, and I could list eight off the top of my head and I thought I was missing some. So we have the chainsaw, we have ... I can email you the exact number. [Editor's note: And he did (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/all-10-left-4-dead-2-melee-weapons-over-here/).]

But yeah, we have quite a few. I think we have more melee weapons already than guns that shipped in Left 4 Dead 1 -- to give you some idea.

Is there anything you haven't announced yet? Anything you're keeping secret, as far as melee goes?

That's why I was trying to list them off! I think we've been telling them all. The only one we haven't shown is the chainsaw.

What about variety in the guns? I saw the sniper, the shotgun, the uzi. What about guns that aren't in the first game? I saw the magnums, for example.

There's a lot of different weapons, and not only are they just different skins, there's actually different behavior inside there. Some of them have a higher rate of fire, some of them do more damage, some are more accurate at a distance. Some of them have other characteristics that we're not revealing quite yet, with how they behave differently.

One of the things in Left 4 Dead 1 that was always interesting was watching people take on roles. We never wanted to have a class system, where you had to be in that role from the start and hang on to it. Because, unlike Team Fortress, where you get a respawn every couple minutes because you die, in Left 4 Dead you tend to play for an extended period. So, you would see people -- depending on who they're playing with -- define their class the way they wanted by the weapons they would choose.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/l4d-2-pax-jockey.jpg
<small>The Jockey, one of the new Special Infected in Left 4 Dead 2</small>

Expanding on that -- people finding their own classes and playing for a long time: A lot of folks seem to enjoy the first Left 4 Dead's Versus Mode, but matches can take a long time. And now you've teased a new mode (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/left-4-dead-2-hands-on-4-you/). Is it designed for shorter spurts, if you don't have a few hours? How does that work?

We really haven't announced the new mode, we're not really talking about it. There's a little bit more left to be revealed on that. But one of the things I think people look at is the DLC -- and this isn't what the new mode is -- but the [Crash Course] DLC has a shorter experience, as well. The new game mode is, obviously, a new game mode. This is not Versus, so we want to also give people who still like Versus different ways to get into the game.

The new special Infected: You have the Spitter and you guys are showing off the Jockey. Is that it? Are there any more?

Spitter, Jockey and Charger.
<table style="width: 225px; height: 160px;" align="left" bgcolor="#ffffff" border="0" cellpadding="10" cellspacing="10"> <tbody> <tr> <td> If you want to hear what someone's cackle sounds like, have them play the Jockey.

</td> </tr> </tbody> </table>
Those are the three new ones. And all those are playable in Versus?

Mmhmm. And if you want to hear what someone's cackle sounds like, have them play the Jockey.

Have you guys come to a decision as far as making Left 4 Dead 1 compatible with Left 4 Dead 2?

That's the kind of thing that we're not going to have concrete right before launch. It's just kind of a complicated issue of different binaries and different sets of models and different changes and stuff, so we'll see. We're definitely aware of the want to do that, and how we do that, we'll work out.

There are new climax moments, crescendo moments. For every campaign, do you try to offer a different kind of thrill?

Well, there's some that work really well, and there's some that are very unique to that situation. For example, consider what we call the Impound Lot. It's just an impound lot of alarm cars. You can actually sneak by and never set one off, but the odds of you doing that are pretty minimal. We have that kind of thing. We have traditional mini-finales and crescendo events as well, so we kind of mix it up. If you think about it, there's five campaigns, there's how many crescendo events? Lots. So there's a lot of variety. It's kind of the same with finales. There's some of what we call traditional finales. And partially we can do those now and not worry because the Spitter and Charger will help impact that.

There are sections, I believe it's in the parish, in the graveyard section, where the map will actually be different depending on how you play.

In certain parts of the campaigns, the Director looks at how you're doing and, as the map starts, lays out that section of the map differently.

So that idea is present in more than just that one graveyard section?

Yes, correct.

It's in other campaigns too?

Yeah.

And how has the Director changed?

Well, the ability to do that is, one, we also have a campaign where it brings in weather events. And that essentially changes it and makes it claustrophobic. You hear the storm coming, you want to find a small place to hang out in and kind of seek safety. And then we also have the ability that it has more creatures to throw at you. So it's smarter about mixing it up, and what it's sending at you and when. It's just not the simple "hunter hunter hunter" kind of thing that happened. How the creatures work together has just gotten really cool, like watching the Spitter throw down spit, and the Jockey grab someone and walk him into the spit.

What are some changes that you've made to the engine, other than the AI Director? Things that you can do in the second game that you can't do in the first game?

The major piece is there's been a ton of work on the Director done. And the cool thing is, for modders, they've been given some control of the director now. When people would say, "Hey, I want to place a Smoker there," and place it, that's not how Left 4 Dead 1 worked. We've opened it up so that the level designers can add some influence, and we'll have a map that the level designers set up to have some influence on the director as well. We've done some more stuff with shadows, lights, water -- we have a lot of water in the game -- and those kind of graphic engine changes.

So the editing tools, will those be available on day one?

We're hoping it'll be day one or extremely shortly afterwards. We've been off the challenge that was Left 4 Dead modeling tools. We hope everyone understands they're not just the Source authoring tools. Like when Team Fortress came out, we already had the Source authoring tools, or the Source SDK. It just fell underneath that umbrella. This had to be its own beast, because it does things differently. It has a different file system entirely than any of our other games. And that's helped performance. There's all these different things that you can do.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/death-aboard.jpg
<small>A screen from the user-created Death Aboard (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/DeathAboard) campaign for Left for Dead 1</small>

Speaking of the level editor, have you seen a pretty big response to that, in the original Left 4 Dead?

Oh yeah, there's some really cool stuff there. I think Death Aboard has been great; Crossroads Mall is looking good. There's some other campaigns, like Dam It, that I've had some fun with. There was one the other day that was ... I wasn't sure if it was trying to be a horror ride or ... I forget the name of it. There's been a ton of great ones.

Have you put any thought into trying to implement some of the better stuff that you find into the Xbox 360 version? Developers have always had trouble doing that.

One of the things that we look at is the campaigns that people are making. They're working without testing on low level machines or the 360. Not even low level machines, really mid-level machines or the 360. Some of theirs can't even run on my high-end machine. So there'd have to be a lot of work there to get them to perform so that we could ship them on their own. One nice thing about Team Fortress map: they're a small, self-contained space. They're not nearly as big as a Left 4 Dead map, let alone a five map campaign. If people start getting stuff close, we'd definitely be [interested]. But one of the things now is the first generation maps, these guys have got amazing work, right out of the gate. But we'll have to see as they get more practice in the engine, as they get more practice working with the Left 4 Dead world, what they can do.

Have you ever considered providing any sort of editing tools for the Xbox 360?

<table style="width: 225px; height: 160px;" align="right" bgcolor="#ffffff" border="0" cellpadding="10" cellspacing="10"> <tbody> <tr> <td> If people want to stick with Left 4 Dead 1, we still have content coming out for it. We're still updating it.

</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> The problem we look at there is always -- I guess I should watch what I say, because I guess you could make something easy that does really complicated stuff -- but, traditionally, when you make something that's really easy to do, what people can do is very similar things, not very unique things. What we allow with the full SDK is that people can do very complicated and very cool things, right? And you see total changes and total, you know, big differences. But with editing tools that come with a game, you see, they're very incremental, more just reordering of current maps and stuff. Honestly, in my opinion, it's more interesting to see the really powerful thing. That's not to say that, down the road, we won't look at something like that. But when I look at something like Death Aboard, that has this ship that's at an angle, and they created all of their own assets and everything. That's really cool. Give me your latest copy, I want to go play it, right?

Some people complained about how Left 4 Dead 2 is coming out a year to the day from the first Left 4 Dead. Are you worried about people not making the transition or people just sticking with Left 4 Dead and being left alone?

No, I think if you look at Counter Strike Source and Counter Strike 1.6, those two are still thriving. Obviously, I think Left 4 Dead 2 is a bigger ... more game -- I don't want to say better, because I love Left 4 Dead 1 -- and I would think it would be the natural way to go, but if people want to stick with Left 4 Dead 1, we still have content coming out for it. We're still updating it. It's a schizophrenic thing, but we've done it before. How we work as a company and how we are willing to be a little schizophrenic, because we always kind of look at games from the gamers' perspective, and we play Left 4 Dead ourselves.

We like Left 4 Dead and equally like Left 4 Dead 2. So if people want to stay in there and not have the melee weapons, it's one of those [things] that you go read the forums and, "Oh my God, they added melee weapons to Left 4 Dead!", where 99 percent of the world is like, "Melee weapons! I want the chainsaw!", right? I mean, it's cool, there are still people playing Team Fortress Classic. We just updated Counter Strike Source a couple of weeks ago.

When you started thinking about new ideas for Left 4 Dead, did you think "We could start adding DLC to the original game"? At what point did it become: "This can't be DLC, this has to be a new game"?

Well, see, early on it became a question of dependencies. So, what you can do with the Director needs to -- because you have these other creatures that it can throw at you -- have these AI changes and it needs to have these other weapons. There are just all these inter-dependencies that existed there that we wanted to be able to deliver in one single file. If we had just released the Charger first it wouldn't have been that interesting. We needed the director changes for the Charger in order to make it work.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/swamp-fever-interview.jpg (http://www.joystiq.com/photos/left-4-dead-2/2160683/full/)

Last question: How much disparity do you see in how many people are playing at any given time between the two versions? Is the community leaning more heavily toward PC versus Xbox 360?

No, no. Both communities are totally thriving. I don't have exact numbers and I don't want to talk off the top of my head. I haven't looked at them for a while, which is bad. I should be. We looked at them around E3, and we're seeing both communities ... there's a thriving community there, and they're both looking forward to the Crash Course DLC. I talk with a lot of people in the community so it's pretty evenly split.

I actually do have to ask one more question: The DLC upcoming for Left 4 Dead 1. On PC it's free, for Xbox it costs seven dollars, I think.

560 Points.

Why is that?

It's just every time we're going to release DLC, we'll come up to this as well. Microsoft did great support for us in getting the Survival Pack DLC out. We think [Crash Course is] a great value. We're really happy with Crash Course. It's good DLC. It's a lot of fun.

Australia's turn to 'boycott' Left 4 Dead 2 (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/17/australia-boycotts-left-4-dead-2/)

Gabe Newell may be going to Australia (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/14/dude-actually-collects-3-000-to-fly-gabe-newell-to-australia/), but his latest game, Left 4 Dead 2 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead-2), is not. The Australian government has refused classification (http://www.oflc.gov.au/www/cob/find.nsf/5b6ebdff7f5b9a24ca2575ca00062226/1ab758e7e649aa5eca257633005daca4%21OpenDocument) to the upcoming zombie shooter's "realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence." Because the Australian ratings system doesn't offer (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/cosplay-protest-seeks-to-push-r18-rating-in-australia-raises-c/) an 18+ rating for games, Left 4 Dead 2 joins the growing (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/risen-banned-in-australia-over-incentivizing-sex-and-drugs/) list (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/26/sexy-poker-denied-classification-in-australia/) of games banned by the government.

While Valve is unlikely to look upon this decision favorably, it can turn this ban into a marketing bullet point. The first game received a MA15 rating (http://www.oflc.gov.au/www/cob/find.nsf/5c2433d416948a0bca25759f00820d25/99aaa3dee35500b6ca2575a900274f61%21OpenDocument), meaning Left 4 Dead 2 must have a totally noticeable and sequel-worthy increase in violence. Doesn't that warrant another $60 purchase (for those of you outside Australia)?

Valve chose New Orleans as L4D2 location because it’s different (http://www.vg247.com/2009/09/19/valve-chose-new-orleans-as-l4d2-location-because-its-different/)

Valve’s Chet Faliszek has said that the reason it chose New Orleans as the location in Left 4 Dead 2 had more to do with the east coat of the US not being used in games much, this making it a fresh locale.
“We still wanted it to be on the East coast, a bunch of us are from the area,” he told Planet Half-Life (http://planethalflife.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Interviews.Detail&id=86). “It’s an interesting place that is not covered in a lot of video games. There’s not a lot of video games that go down to the deep south, through the Savanna and New Orleans. There’s a lot of cool gameplay there, there’s a lot of cool areas. You can be in the swamps, the Savanna or New Orleans, it’s a beautiful city.
“It seemed like a good opportunity to go through there, so we jumped on it.”
Don’t forget that the deep south can be a very mysterious place, what with all the live oaks littered with Spanish moss fluttering in the breeze; the humid heaviness of the air; the thick essence of jasmine and wisteria wafting through your nostrils; toothy zombies just gagging to sink rotting fangs into you.
Great place it is.

Speaking about upcoming co-op zombie shooter Left 4 Dead 2 at EA's Tokyo press conference (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/22/joystiq-liveblog-ea-showcase-tokyo/) today, Valve's Kim Swift announced intentions to release a demo on October 27. Though no platforms were explicitly mentioned, we're betting pre-orders on both Xbox 360 and PC platforms will be getting first dibs, as Valve has already stated (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/04/valve-left-4-dead-2-multiplayer-demo-on-its-way/2).

From what we understand, the demo will feature multiplayer, though we're not sure to what capacity this will extend. Either way, Xbox 360 and PC owners will get a chance to try out at least some of the 10 melee weapons (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/all-10-left-4-dead-2-melee-weapons-over-here/) well before the game's November 17 release (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/left-4-dead-2-nov-17-on-xbox-360-pc/). We'll ask EA for more details on the demo as the Tokyo Game Show continues this week.

Left 4 Dead 2's new 'Scavenge' multiplayer mode revealed (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/valve-unveils-left-4-dead-2s-new-scavenge-multiplayer-mode/)

by Randy Nelson (http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/randy-nelson/) http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/writer_rss.gif (http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/randy-nelson/rss.xml) { 8 hours ago } http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/001breaking001.png (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@breaking/) http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/001xbox001.png (http://xbox.joystiq.com/) http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/pc-button25.png (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@pc)

Valve took the wraps off Left 4 Dead 2 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead-2)'s brand-new competitive multiplayer game type, "Scavenge," at a press event in San Francisco this evening. According to the developer, this mode is built purely for "quick, more frantic gameplay." (Yes, L4D actually can be more frantic).

Scavenge has the four survivor characters scrambling to collect gas cans from various spots in a confined location -- in this case a motel, pictured -- in order to fuel up a generator before a two-minute timer expires. There are 16 cans total and 20 seconds are added to the clock for each one that's successfully retrieved.

Four other players, controlling Special Infected, must do their best to stop the cans from reaching the goal. The two new Special Infected, Spitters and Jockeys, really excel in this mode. The former can set dropped cans on fire, while the latter can leap onto the shoulders of a survivor, "steering" them away from their goal.

These best two-out-of-three matches are broken up into three rounds, during the "half time" of which players switch sides. Valve confirmed that each of L4D2's campaigns has a unique Scavenge map, for a total of six shipping with the game on November 17.

Left 4 Dead 2 will have a harder mode called Realsim (http://www.vg247.com/2009/10/08/left-4-dead-2-will-have-a-harder-moder-called-realism/)

Looks like along with Scavenge (http://www.vg247.com/2009/10/08/l4d2-scavenge-mode-to-make-game-more-frantic/) mode in Left 4 Dead 2, Valve has added a hardcore mode called Realism.
Noticed by 1UP (http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3176408) in the menu options during a preview, VP of marketing Doug Lombardi explained to the site that the mode was something for the “super hardcore player”.
“Take Portal for example,” he said when describing the mode. “We had our best internal players who could blow through that game in about 30 minutes, but within weeks of launching it we had people on YouTube beating [the testers'] times by 10 minutes or more.
“Realism is for those players.”

Left 4 Dead 2 Achievements confirm final campaigns, detail new features (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/12/left-4-dead-2-achievements-confirm-final-campaigns-detail-new-f/)

The Achievement aficionados over at Xbox360Achievments.org (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/left-4-dead-2/achievements/) have uncovered the Xbox 360 Achievements for Left 4 Dead 2 (http://joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead-2). The Achievements offer some insane challenges -- "Survive a campaign on Expert skill with Realism mode enabled" -- and, if accurate, also confirm the recently uncovered (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/11/rumor-dead-center-and-hard-rain-are-final-left-4-dead-2-cam/) "Dead Center" and "Hard Rain" campaigns. The Achievements also detail some new features and confirm other rumored features, most notably a defibrillator which can be used to revive teammates. Also mentioned is an adrenaline power-up to boost speed, deployable ammo upgrades and ... a bile bomb. We really hope that last one does what we think it does.

L4D2 pre-order demo out Oct. 27, public demo Nov. 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/15/l4d2-pre-order-demo-out-oct-27-public-demo-nov-3/)

by Richard Mitchell (http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/richard-mitchell/) http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/writer_rss.gif (http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/richard-mitchell/rss.xml) { Oct 15th 2009 at 12:40PM } http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/001xbox001.png (http://xbox.joystiq.com/) http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/pc-button25.png (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@pc)

Remember when Valve announced that the Left 4 Dead 2 demo (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/04/valve-left-4-dead-2-multiplayer-demo-on-its-way/) would launch on October 27th (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/left-4-dead-2-demo-running-straight-for-xbox-pc-on-october-27/)? It turns out that date is actually the early access date for those who pre-order the game on Xbox 360 or PC (via Steam). Starting November 3rd, the demo will be available to all PC players and Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Xbox Live Silver members, as usual, will have to wait an additional week to demo the game on November 10th. Then again, if you only have a Silver account, you probably aren't too excited for a predominantly multiplayer game anyway.

The Left 4 Dead 2 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead-2,demo) demo will allow up to four players the opportunity to survive "The Parish" campaign. The PC version will be playable online or through a local network, while the Xbox version will feature the same options -- plus two-player split screen. Valve notes that the demo includes "all the new boss infected zombies and all the new melee weapons." So, please, do yourself a favor: grab a katana (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/hands-on-with-l4d2s-dark-carnival-and-a-katana/) and start cutting fools down.

(Dead Center)
暗黑嘉年華(Dark Carnival)
沼澤熱(Swamp Fever)
暴雨(Hard Rain)
教區(The Parish)

感染者(Infected)

防火感染者(Hazmat-suited Infected)
牠們穿著防護衣,所以火焰或燃燒子彈無法對他們造成傷害。(只會出現在教區戰役)

泥漿感染者(Mud-men)
牠們會藏在泥漿裹,牠們是用爬行來移動,所以牠們十分快。如果倖存者受到牠們攻擊,畫面會出現一些泥漿。(只會出現在沼澤熱戰役)

小丑感染者(Clown Infected)
牠們發出特別的叫聲後,會吸引附近的感染者。(只會出現在暗黑嘉年華戰役)

警察感染者(Riot Gear Infected)

Charger(暴衝者)
牠會衝向倖存者,並不斷把倖存者抓起,然後把倖存者往地面撞擊。

Spitter(噴吐者)
牠會吐出一些綠色的酸性液體,這些酸性液體會腐蝕倖存者,令倖存者受傷。

Jockey(騎師)
牠會騎著倖存者,然後拉倖存者離開隊伍,把倖存者拉到一些危險的地方。
